Chapter 4

Holidays of the future

Here, Sykes Cottages key personnel have given their predictions for the future of domestic breaks in Britain:

Customers are comfortable booking and paying for holidays online, and increasingly using mobile devices as 4G coverage becomes more widespread.

Miles Hill, Chief Executive

I believe more and more people will try UK holidays based on budget and the opportunity to see more of what is on offer to us on our doorstep. As with any product, people want more for less and therefore have a high expectation. I think more customers are seeking that perfect luxury cottage or even something a little quirky. I myself wouldn't mind trying out one of our high spec yurts!

Shelley D'Arcy, UK Property Manager

I've been in the industry longer than I care to remember and one of the biggest changes has been in the way that review sites like TripAdvisor influence customers' purchasing decisions when they are looking to book a holiday. It's all about recommendation these days and I can't see that changing.

Helen Bonner, Operations Director

Over the years I have seen consumers become much more interested in what they are going to do whilst on holiday and increasingly customers expect much more than 'just a base'. The rise in the availability and choice of activities available in the UK means that customers are now planning everything, from where they are going to eat out or go mountain biking, before their break starts.

A survey of Sykes Cottages staff also suggested a general trend towards booking in advance, with the majority of respondents believing customers have become more inclined to book ahead in the past two years. However, many also felt “last minute deal culture”, meaning the perception that better deals can be had by booking late, remains strong.
