Just Show Me Barnard Castle Cottages
Passion for historic treasures, fine art and scenic surroundings? Then escape to the ancient capital of Teesdale and relax in one of our Barnard Castle cottages. Locally known as 'Barney', this lovely market town is a paradise for lovers of antiques and art, with lots of small shops to sample and browse. Foodies, meanwhile, will make for the pubs and restaurants along with the farmers' market, held each month on the cobbled market place and showcasing a huge variety of local delicacies. There's also a bustling market on Wednesdays, with all the usual kinds of stalls. Pick up a Town Trail leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre and wander the streets, admiring attractive architecture along the way. Look out for the Butter Mart, the octagonal market cross, today a busy roundabout but once a gaol and fire station! Explore the 12th Century castle with its exquisite great hall and round-towered keep, built by Bernard Baliol (hence the town's name) and protected by English Heritage.
