The Lake District is the ideal holiday destination for a pet-friendly getaway.

With its breath-taking landscape and magnificent National Park, the emphasis is very much on being outdoors and exploring unique surroundings. There are plenty of pet-friendly eateries to relax, refuel and recuperate after a long day of adventure.

1. The Warehouse Café, Kendal

The Warehouse Café is part of the Brewery Arts Centre, a charity-funded business supported by the Arts Council England. There is a cinema, theatre, art exhibition and a variety of festivals that take place at the venue.

During the day time, the café is open to the public and the menu contains high-quality ingredients from local suppliers wherever possible. Choose from their range of sandwiches, snacks, light meals, cakes and scones.


2. Chesters by the River, Skelwith Bridge near Ambleside

Chesters by the River is set in a wonderfully scenic location, just a few minutes’ walk from a waterfall, in Skelwith Bridge. The café is attached to a shop that was once a timber store and sells a variety of items, from fashion accessories to contemporary furnishings.

They serve a host of fantastic treats, including homemade lunches, wood-fired pizzas and mouth-watering cakes. There’s outdoor seating, perfect for sitting out in the sunshine and admiring the view across the water.

3. Lowther Castle Café, Penrith

The perfect lunch spot if you’re visiting the grounds of Lowther Castle, which was originally commissioned by William, 1st Earl of Lonsdale in 1806. Learn about the extensive history and mixed fortune of the estate, venture around the gardens and enjoy some truly incredible views of the surrounding land.

You can also take dogs into the gardens, providing they are kept on a lead. Stop off at the café for refreshments and sample their delicious menu. All listed items are homemade and made to order, including soups, sandwiches, vegetarian and gluten free options, plus a range of delicious cakes. They even supply plenty of water outside for your four-legged friends to quench their thirst.


4. Baldry’s Tearoom, Grasmere

Rated number one on Trip Advisor for places to east in Grasmere, Baldry’s Tea Room has been serving delicious home baked treats for over 25 years. For the past few years, the venue has gone under new ownership and has been transformed into a vintage-style tearoom, serving breakfasts, light lunches, a range of hot meals, incredible home-made cakes, plus freshly ground coffee and loose leaf tea.

The selection of home-made desserts are always rated highly, particularly their scrumptious lemon meringue pie – see if you can stop at one slice. Don’t be surprised if you have to queue for a while to get a table, it gets pretty busy!


5. Naturally Hawkshead Café, Hawkshead

Attached to the Hawkshead Outdoors clothing store, Naturally Hawkshead Café is the perfect respite after a morning of exploring your beautiful, rural surroundings or perhaps after indulging in a spot of shopping. Offering plenty of space to sit indoors or outdoors, you can choose to get comfy with your four-legged friends wherever you like.

All items on the menu are created using locally-sourced produce and you can choose from the breakfast menu, lunch menu and there’s a great selection of mouth-watering cakes and desserts to choose from, made using Nanna Bowman’s special recipe!
