It may seem like yesterday the kids went back to school but, believe it or not, the October half term is creeping up on us – and there’s no better time to take a break! You get to see the UK in all its autumnal glory with long country walks and warming comfort foods being the order of the day. We’ve tracked down some of the cottages that are still available to book for the school holidays, so that you can have a look and start planning your autumn escape.

Berian Cross, Pembrokeshire

Berian Cross, ref. 14417

First up  is Berian Cross in the sleepy hamlet of Brynberian, around five miles from Newport in south Wales. A chocolate box cottage, Berian Cross features three bedrooms which sleep up to seven people between them. This property is perfect for a lover of the outdoors; situated in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, it gives easy access to walks, bike rides and even boat trips. And what’s better, back at the cottage there’s a luxury kitchen waiting for you to rustle up a nice warming meal at the end of the day!

The Granary, Norfolk

The Granary, ref. 14213

Or there’s The Granary, a grade II listed cottage in the town of Downham Market, not too far from King’s Lynn in Norfolk. A cosy property with an open fire in the living room, a wonderful country kitchen, and a bay window looking out over the cottage garden, you’ll never want to set foot outside! Should you venture out, you’ll be spoilt for choice with spots like the RSPB reserves at both Snettisham and Titchwell Marsh, as well as a range of stately homes a short way away, including Sandringham Estate and Holkham Hall.

Bwthyn Awel, Anglesey

Bwythyn Awyl, ref. 913963

Finally there’s Bwythyn Awyl on Anglesey; a delightful property that can sleep up to ten people throughout its five bedrooms, two of which come with their own en-suites! There’s a luxury NEFF kitchen too, which leads to a raised deck where you’ll find stunning views over the sea. And that’s not all; within a few miles, you’ll be able to find the palatial Plas Newydd Country House, as well as the South Stack Lighthouse, one of the most iconic sights of Anglesey.

But don’t forget those properties are just a few examples of the fantastic cottages that are still available over the half term period! We’ve got everything from cosy cottages in the countryside to houses big enough for the whole family, so if you fancy taking a break then have a look at the full selection or call us on 01244 356695 and we’ll help find your dream holiday cottage!

It’s St Swithun’s Day!

Today, 15th July, also marks St Swithun’s day and the patron saint’s famous rhyme which is said to forecast the weather for the next few weeks to come…

St Swithun’s day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithun’s day if thou be fair
For forty days ‘twill rain nae mare

As I gaze out of the window here at Sykes HQ in Chester, all I can see is bright blue sky and sunshine-dappled trees and I hope that the next 40 days are just the same!

Find a cottage!

Booking a cottage for half term is a great excuse to spend some quality time together as a family; stick on your wellies and get out in the great outdoors or visit a popular attraction like the Anglesey Sea Zoo or Eden Project in Cornwall!  Choosing your cottage is half the fun; find a cottage with an indoor swimming pool or games room just in case the heavens open or a cottage on a working farm to get your hands dirty!  Find a cottage just a couple of hours drive from home to cut down shouts of “are we nearly there yet?” and get your holiday going as soon as you set off.  You could even choose a cottage big enough for a couple of families or the grandparents and enjoy a few days of fun with the whole family.

Where to go?

The world (or rather the UK and Ireland) is your oyster when it comes to choosing where to spend half term.  Cornwall is a great option for a family holiday any time of year; walk on the beach and build sandcastles, discover Cornwall’s mysterious past at the Museum of Witchcraft and enjoy a Cornish pasty or two.  The Lake District is another fantastic option with great watersports, the home of Peter Rabbit and numerous animal parks to explore.  Or, why not try a few days in Wales in the run up to St David’s Day?

What to do?

Keeping the whole family occupied can be quite a challenge, especially if your children are different ages.  Attractions the length and breadth of the country are re-opening after the winter break with special half term activities to keep everyone entertained.  Check out the National Trust website for inspiration if you’re children are little or consider planning more active days out like spending time at The Chill Factore if your children are older.  As Shrove Tuesday falls just a few days before half term is due to start why not have a pancake flipping contest?  Make up a batch of pancakes and see who can flip their pancake the highest number of times in a minute!

The great news is that we still have plenty of cottages available for the half term break so why not head to our website or give our friendly reservations team a call to find your perfect cottage?

Five star cottages

Life in the lap of luxury could be yours with a luxury holiday cottage from Sykes.  Each of our properties is personally inspected and awarded a tick rating, similar to stars awarded by tourist boards.  You’ll be spoilt for choice with our great range of five tick properties especially as it’s much cheaper to stay in a luxurious self-catering cottage than in a five star hotel.  Look forward to state of the art kitchens, high end furnishings, sumptuous linens and towels and fancy technology.  Aspiring Lords of the manor can even choose a cottage with a private chef or butler to make the holiday even more special!
