Every year thousands of dog owners have the same age old problem, how to arrange for someone to look after their dog whilst they go on holiday. It can be tricky – looking after someone else’s dog is a huge responsibility and even best friends and relatives can be reluctant to offer. Spaces at kennels can get booked up quickly and even if you can find somewhere, will you be able to really enjoy your holiday with a key member of the family missing? The solution is to bring your beloved family pet on holiday with you, to a pet friendly cottage from Sykes Cottages!

The Olympics is Coming to London!

With just three days until the London 2012 Olympic Games begin, the UK is getting ready for a truly spectacular opening ceremony that will mark the start of the competition. We have been promised a truly wonderful display and I for one just can’t wait!

The countdown to the London 2012 games

The countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games

The Olympic torch has been making its way around the UK since the middle of May but on Friday 27th July 2012, the world’s eyes will be on London. The bells of Big Ben will be ringing across London for three minutes on Friday morning to celebrate the start of the games and the official opening ceremony will begin at the Olympic Stadium at 9pm. Only the lucky few have managed to get tickets for the ceremony, but the whole thing is being shown on the BBC so we can all get to see this truly special event.

It’s not all about London though as there are many events being held all over the country. Mountain biking is taking place in Essex and there are football games taking place in Manchester, Cardiff and Newcastle to name but a few. So if you have tickets why not book a cottage holiday to Wales or Northumberland and make a trip of it? There are holiday cottages within reach of the major cities that mean you can enjoy the festivities but retreat away from it at the end of the day.

If you haven’t got tickets for any of the sporting events, there are still ways to get involved. There are open air events taking place in London, including road cycling, the marathon, the triathlon and marathon swimming that you don’t need tickets for. So get out on the streets and show your support for the athletes!

Across the country, big screens are being set up in towns and cities so that people can congregate together and watch the competition, so if you haven’t got tickets and you don’t want to head to London, you can still get involved. There is still time to book a holiday cottage in the UK during the Olympics. Why not book a large cottage and go with family and friends so you can all watch the games together? However you celebrate the Olympic Games coming to the UK, have a fantastic time!

So many reasons to stay in the UK this summer!

So, schools out for summer! Six whole weeks of holidays lie ahead of the nation’s school children. But talking to mums outside the school gates, so many people are still to book a summer holiday. Forget staying at home, tearing your hair out with the kids; why not book a holiday in the UK?

There has been so much talk in recent years about the great British staycation, but forget the cliché, more and more people are choosing to stay in the UK for their summer holidays, not because they have to but because they want to. There is still availability for self-catering cottage breaks during the summer holidays so take your pick from the beauty of the Lake District to the wild Highlands of Scotland or the serene coast of Cornwall and Devon. Never mind passports, airports and jabs, holidaying in the UK is the simplest and best type of trip that you can have.

Staying in a Sykes holiday cottage is the perfect balance of keeping the cost of your family holiday down but also enjoying a touch of luxury and comfort at the same time. Plus if the weather isn’t good then a holiday cottage is a lovely place to retreat to, light the fire and relax for the evening. If you feel like pushing the boat out then there are some great family cottages with swimming pools, games rooms and hot tubs, all sure to be winners with the kids. You are on holiday after all!

So many British people have seen surprisingly little of the UK, myself included, that in recent years I have made it my mission to see more of what wonders the UK has to offer. In the last year I have visited the Cotswolds, Yorkshire and the Lake District and there really are so many cottages to choose from. The hardest part is deciding where next!

This video from Visit Britain demonstrates why the UK is such a great holiday destination. Why not search our website for holiday cottages available in the school holidays?
