The Sykes Cottages Guide To Budleigh Salterton

So named with reference to the salt panning which was once the mainstay of the economy of this small Devon village, Budleigh Salterton today enjoys a tranquil existence in its lovely coastal position among picturesque rolling countryside in the heart of Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The bay is a half moon sweep of large, smooth pebbles that gives way to a sandy stretch of beach just a short walk beyond the village at nearby Littleham Cove, and forms part of the region’s ancient Jurassic Coast, with its wonderful red rocks. The waters are clear and children will love exploring the rocks making a natural playground at Ottermouth, to the east of the village.

The Fairlynch Museum in the village centre charts the history and natural habitat of the local area, along with displays of locally produced Devon lace and a collection of costumes, plus visitors on a cottage holiday are well catered for thanks to a thriving number of local independent shops in the village centre. Nearby Otterton Mill Craft Centre offers an interesting visit. There is a working mill on site plus a tempting bakery selling a vast array of breads and cakes from flours produced at the mill, whilst the Gallery is a showcase for local artists selling their work. Otterton also hosts highly popular musical evenings with jazz, folk and blues artists from around the world packed into the intimate venue, which extends to outdoor performances during the summer months.
