Two wide sandy bays, dominated by a cliff top castle, harbour and rugged coastline have kept cottage holidaymakers coming back to Scarborough over the years. One of the Yorkshire Coast’s premier resorts, it has plenty to offer the visitor, from seaside activity, shopping, historic houses and castles and contemporary visitor attractions, such as the Sealife Centre and the Rotunda Museum.
The twin North and South Bays are separated by a rocky outcrop, crowned by the ruins of Scarborough castle, testament to the site’s strategic importance and one which has been occupied since Celtic times. The North Bay offers the seaside trappings of a typical English seaside resort; amusement arcades, slot machines, fun parks and a lovely beach. Here you’ll find the Scarborough Sealife Centre, popular Peasholm Park and the North Bay Miniature Railway. The South Bay has a somewhat more laid back, genteel air about it. The wide stretch of sand here gives way to not one but two harbours, one still a working fishing harbour whilst the other houses a fleet of pleasure boats, making it the place to go to join one of the many available cruises around the Scarborough Bay area.
Visitor attractions are plentiful; this resort has been catering for holidaymakers for many long years. The Sealife Centre and Marine Sanctuary reveal the wonders of the deep, from rays, sharks and penguins to turtles and rescued seal pups. Visit one of the UK’s oldest Lifeboat Stations, or step back in time at Scarborough Fair Collection; a huge and eclectic collection of mechanical organs and old-fashioned wurlitzers. Ride the gleaming Galloping Horses and enjoys the sounds of the organs being played in a unique day out. Scarborough Castle is, of course, a must for any visitor, and the views from the battlements on a fine day are unrivalled. Hunt out ‘Hairy Bob’s Grave’ at the foot of the castle, and enjoy refreshments in the Master Gunner’s House. The North Bay Miniature Railway is one of the oldest stretches of steam railway in the country, trips on the short line offer lovely views of the North Bay. The railway starts opposite Peasholm Park, a lovely, oriental-themed green space in the North Bay with boating lakes featuring giant swan pedaloes, Canadian canoes and rowing boats – plenty of fun to be had here simply messing about in boats.
