Cornwall is home to a wonderful selection of castles; from coastal strongholds to country fortresses, the area is rife...
With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Wimbledon and now the Olympics, we Brits can be excused for feeling more than a little bit patriotic this year. And whilst we may be happy to spend our bank holiday weekends enjoying what our great country has to offer what’s to stop us planning our entire summer break around our wonderful country?
Whilst it is true that the weather can be somewhat temperamental in the UK, if we are lucky enough to get some sun Britain has holiday destinations to rival the best in the world.
And many of us are already aware of this with 30% of Brits planning to take their main break in the UK this year according to research by TravelSupermarket.
Whether it’s a break with the family by the beach, a romantic city break with your other half or a fun filled countryside getaways with your friends the UK has something for everyone.
At one time Great Britain was the epi-centre of all things family beach holiday, piers stood majestically off our favourite sea-side resorts and the whole family could enjoy a week or two of fun without the need to even leave the country. With the advance in air travel our seaside resorts began to lose visitors and now many of them are only shadows of what they used to be.
However there are still plenty of great British seaside resorts that are well worth a visit if taking a family staycation this summer. A stay in Blackpool is great for the whole family, enjoy ice creams as you walk along the beach and tuck into some fish and chips on the pier. Children will love the attractions at the Blackpool Pleasure Beach or if theme parks aren’t your thing the Sea Life Centre and Adventure Golf can provide the family with hours of fun. A holiday to Blackpool needn’t be expensive; there are great deals to be had on accommodation and plenty of vouchers to lessen the cost of otherwise expensive days out.
If the thought of a British beach holiday leaves you less inspired than a beach holiday to say Spain or Greece, it shouldn’t – a total of 79 English beaches were awarded the coveted Blue Flag award this year. Making the British coastline one of the most beautiful in the world.
The city of the moment in the UK has to be London! The whole world is watching our capital city as people from all over the world come to visit to watch the Olympics and revel in the party atmosphere.
Whilst a visit to our great capital during this time may be fun it would be increasingly difficult to find accommodation at short notice – instead why not stay just outside the city in neighbouring counties Essex, Kent or Surrey and travel in to experience the games related fun. You don’t have to have a ticket to enjoy the sport; Hyde Park will be showing the games live on a big screen where visitors can watch the games for free whilst still enjoying the atmosphere of the crowd.
If the crowds of London aren’t your thing then why not try a smaller city, York is perfect for a romantic getaway, with plenty of historic sights to see in the day and fantastic bars and restaurants to enjoy in the evenings. Treat your other half to some sweet treats at the famous Betty’s tea room or head to the races for a fun filled day out with a flutter on the Gee Gees!
If your idea of fun is to get away from all of the crowds with a select group of friends then a break to the Great British countryside could be for you.
Head to somewhere like the Lake District with a gang of your nearest and dearest and enjoy all of the outdoor activities that are on offer, long walks in the national park and water sports on the lakes then head back to your accommodation for cosy nights in in front of the log fire.
Hiring a large holiday cottage can be a great base for a big get together, having accommodation where all of you can stay together can not only be great fun but also save on money – self-catering cottages come with fantastic facilities, meaning you can cook large meals for the whole group without having to fork out for expensive restaurant meals.
If you choose a cottage that allows it you can even take your pets with you – not only do they get to enjoy a break with you but you also don’t have to spend money on expensive kennel costs.
