During your stay in a holiday cottage, take time to visit this delightful town. Taunton is the county town of Somerset with an interesting local heritage which can be uncovered using the town’s Heritage Trail; a self-guided circular walking route which takes in the lovely old black and white timbered buildings and places of interest in the heart of the town. Taunton castle is a Grade I listed ancient monument in the very centre of town, dating back to the twelfth century and now home to the Somerset County Museum.
A visit to this varied museum will reveal exhibitions and collections as diverse as natural history, dolls and toys, fossils, silverware, pottery and the history of the various campaigns of the Somerset Light Infantry.
Elsewhere in town, Bath Place is the address for those seeking a spot of retail therapy; this historic area was once the main thoroughfare into the town and the collection of eighteenth century cottages and houses have been converted into an eclectic array of independent retailers and specialist stores, selling everything from flowers to local crafts and jewellery to deli produce and body piercing.
Not far from Taunton, at Cricket St Thomas, a great family day out can be enjoyed at the Wildlife Park, a leading wildlife park and animal conservation centre with a whole host of animals to delight the children, from ring-tailed lemurs to leopards and cheetahs.
