The Lake District’s beautiful countryside inspired Beatrix Potter to write her famous series of books. Tales of Peter Rabit...
Just a short drive, yet seemingly a world away from busy Birmingham, Tenbury Wells is an ancient market town nestling in the tranquil Teme Valley. On a cottage holiday, The Pump Rooms is well worth a visit and is situated in a rather idiosyncratic landmark building, designed in the late nineteenth century to house to town’s Spa. The unique Round Market was built by the same designer and here markets still take place twice weekly, in time-honoured fashion. Follow the Tenbury Town Trail to take in these sights and more. You’ll discover the Burgage, St. Mary’s Church, many lovely half-timbered black and white houses dating from the seventeenth century, the Stepping Stones and the Tenbury Museum. Stay a while and take in a film at the delightful Regal Picture House, a cinema complete with trappings from the 1930’s.
For outdoor lovers, the Teme Valley has much to offer. Unspoilt and relatively undiscovered, this is really great walking country. For keen fishermen, permits to fish the river Teme are readily available, and there are excellent cycling routes and two golf courses within easy reach. Explore the fruit orchards of the surrounding countryside, pick your own in season, and sample the local cider. If you holiday in October, enjoy the annual Apple Fest. At other times of the year, the annual Carnival in May, Countryside Show in August and Mistletoe Festival in December showcase a countryside town at its most vibrant.
