For those interested, a good place from which to explore Rosedale Iron Mines & Railway. It is remote and access is by narrow roads with steep hills. If the weather is severe, plan your route with care.

Wanted for nothing. A better selection of cooking utensils, pots and pans and such, than we’ve seen anywhere else. Gorgeous scenery. Able to watch the farming activities. We were made to feel so welcome. None of us wanted to leave. We switched off from everything except the views and Nature. The Peacocks put the icing on the cake. We will be back. Thank you for all the effort you put in for us to enjoy. We absolutely appreciate it.

  • "Wonderful springtime stay at the Arches last week This cottage and its surroundings are absolutely wonderful."

As others have said, the photos don’t do it enough justice. Its rustic, spacious but cosy at the same time. There was nothing quite like sitting outside, enjoying the beautiful view as the sun rolled across the dale, sipping a Whitby Gin and listening to the newborn lambs and their mums getting settled for the night. The reviews for this cottage don’t lie – the Arches really is superb. I was also delighted to note that the owners do listen and action feedback. On arrival, there was milk, biscuits and a very special treat in the fridge thank you! The owners were just such lovely, kind, caring people and clearly love their animals and farm. The Arches and the Old Cart House are a converted barn, so you can expect the odd critter (we have stayed in October when the big mummy spiders like to visit - you have been warned), but I must emphasise how clean the cottage was – we didn’t find any old webs, ash or dust! The heating booster setting warms up the cottage very quickly, and there’s plenty of wood provided for the log fire. Lovely comfy big beds in the upstairs rooms; the bedding and giant bath towels were spotlessly white and soft. Extra bedding was provided in the cupboard. The shower is over the bath (be careful climbing in) – but its very powerful and hot, just what you need after a long day’s walk. We took our 12 year old poodle with us and he was happy trotting around outside on the graveled front - the cottage does ask that dogs are well behaved as it’s a working farm so bear this in mind when the sheep are lambing and the gate must always be shut. Expect to drive to the nearest shops/supermarket, the Moorside Store is worth a visit for the homemade pies that you just stick in the oven back at the cottage. We ordered steaks from Farndale Farm (the leaflet is in the draw by the TV stand) and the owners kindly delivered them to us at the Arches – puts all supermarket quality to shame! Lots to do in North Yorkshire particularly if you are an English Heritage member but, at the same time, if you just want to relax in peace in front of the cottage fire, the Arches is perfect. We will be back later in the year without a doubt.

  • "Amazing place, the views and the property absolutely charming."

In fact breathtaking and the photos do not do them justice. The owners were ever so helpful and accommodating as and when we needed something which was rare as the property was so well equipped. The heating was fine as you could buy more logs - speedily delivered from the owners and the boost button was always an option. We are seriously thinking of booking again. The only tweak we would make is a couple of blankets for the evenings and maybe newer mattresses in the main bedrooms as my parents struggled a little but not enough to not enjoy it and be comfortable. A super place with majestic views a real find and one of my favourite cottages ever!

  • "We stayed at the Arches in early March."

The views from the cottage are beautiful. Access to the cottage is very good although the roads are quite narrow as you would expect in a rural setting so care has to be taken when driving down the valley. The owners are very friendly and helpful and attended to any needs we had promptly and efficiently. As my wife has a disability the downstairs bedroom with bathroom next door was a real blessing and helped make our stay so much easier. The cottage was warm and comfortable. TV and WiFi worked well. The central heating is on a timer but if required you can press the booster button to turn it on at any time. All appliances worked well and efficiently. On the whole we were very pleased with the cottage to the extent that we have booked to return later in the year.

Only downsides was the tight parking ok if you have a smaller car but two large cars was a little tricky. An airer might be beneficial. Overall really enjoyed our stay with fantastic views , Will be back again!

  • "The place is in a lovely location, walks are there straight out of the door if you want them and it's just a few miles to the main road on Blakey Ridge, for access to Whitby, Scarborough and York, although I wouldn't like to attempt it in winter weather (I've never seen so many grit boxes on one short road) after seeing the photos in the Lion pub on the top."

Do you like spiders? My wife hates them and we were overrun by them during our week, I had to deal with well over 20 large spiders, my wife wouldn't go anywhere in the property until I'd been round and checked for them, she couldn't relax as you'd be sat there in the evening trying to relax and watch TV when you'd spot another spider crawling across the carpet, she wouldn't go downstairs or stay downstairs on her own. As another reviewer said the place isn't the cleanest, lots of very old cobwebs in every corner (don't look behind the tv), the previous guests hair still in the bath plughole. There was wood, kindling and newspapers available for the fire but nothing to light it with. With the place being so remote I was expecting at least a pint of milk in the fridge but just a packet of biscuits as a welcome gift and the nearest shop some 9 miles away, also everywhere we've stayed before there's been kitchen roll but not here. The electric hob must be the slowest hob in the world, took forever to heat up. The four poster bed needs the mattress renewing as as soon as two of you get in you both roll into the middle and you feel like you are sleeping on a slope. We were disturbed one evening by the guests in the adjoining holiday let as they decided to go out and leave their dog in the property and it did nothing but bark and howl for the four hours they were out. The place has the potential to be really nice if a few things were attended too and its right up our street with its location but sadly due to the spider issue (and we stay and live in rural locations) we wouldn't come back as my wife said she just couldn't relax.

  • "We had a 7 day break with our 2 dogs and loved it."

A rural location, but with the added bonus of a local pup if you don't fancy cooking, walks and cycling opportunities directly from your front door. The cottage was comfortable, clean and felt spacious - especially the two double bedrooms. Linen was lovely, kitchen well stocked for our requirements and you can't help but smile at the wonderful views. The only small niggles were not having a decent hoover (not something you would notice without dogs!) and lack of a coffee table. If we visit North Yorkshire in the future we would certainly book again.

  • "This property is in the most fantastic location, with superb views."

That, along with the local pub, made our stay a wonderful one. HOWEVER… when it comes to cleanliness and comfort ability, the property fell far short of our expectations and what the previews failed to point out. Had it done so we would not have booked here. Pro’s Fabulous location for lovely walks Safe, enclosed garden for the dog Good internet speed Netflix King size beds, not double Lovely upstairs bedrooms although 4 poster bed mattress very thin and had to move rooms on day 2, and no tv aerial in 2nd bedroom. TV in 4 poster room complicated to use. Clean bedding and towels. Some printed local walking maps in the property Cons Settees need replacing as no support at all. We used the dining table chairs and rocking chair for the whole week. General cleanliness was poor throughout the property. Dust webs, dirty worktops, mucky radiators, dining table felt sticky, dusty mirrors…I could go on. Kitchen lacked the most basic essentials that have been in every other Sykes property we have stayed at, such as salt, basic oils etc-petty I know but when you’re staying in the middle of nowhere, these things are important to know so people can go prepared with a full stock of at the very least, the basics. The last thing you want to do is have to go back out to purchase these things, as the nearest shop is many miles away, along some tricky roads.. The tumble dryer didn’t work and tripped the electrics a number of times. Owner notified, who said a new washer dryer has been ordered, sadly too late for us. Logs provided, but no kindling, paper or matches, so useless unless you have brought these. I hope this will be helpful for the owners to improve the staying experience, because had all the above been addressed, we would no doubt have used this as a regular base, but we were glad to get home and sit in comfort.

The shower was a challenge to work, and more kitchen utensils would be better. The Lion Inn on the Moors was amazing the food out of this world with friendly accommodating staff. The Feversham arms was bright and airy, with friendly staff, and dogs are welcome in both pubs. The draw back with the Feversham is that it isn’t open all the time, the food was ok. The farm animals were lovely you woke up to cockerels crowing, and sheep, ducks geese and peacocks not to mention pheasants and quail. It was a different scene every day.

The cottage was practically furnished however the bathroom seemed outdated and the cutlery in the kitchen was at a bare minimum for six people. We recommend some additional forks, knives and plates. Furthermore a real bummer was we couldn’t get the drying feature of the washing machine working, so we had to find a way to dry in the living room.
