  • "The house was lovely and quiet, in a lovely location, less than 10 minutes walk to Wallingford town centre with it's shops, pubs and coffee stops."

The garden being right on the Thames was a really relaxing place to be, and even when indoors the garden and river were still in full view courtesy of big patio doors. We saw a kingfisher, a heron, bats and lots of rowers on the river. The house was well equipped and had comfortable beds and furniture. There were a couple of minor issues which didn't spoil our stay but are worth noting. The parking space for two cars next to the house is good because there is no on road parking nearby, but although it is like a garage in that it has walls and a door, it doesn't have a roof. Above the 'garage' is a massive tree which birds roost in and our two cars were covered in bird poo after a couple of days. I mean multiple poo on every panel of my car, not just one or two splats (I have photos) If it was possible even to stretch a tarpaulin sheet over the top that would likely do the trick. Another minor thing was that some of the drawers and handles perhaps need renewing. For example, the handle on the back door which leads to the parking space is pretty loose inside and out. Just fitting a replacement handle would solve that issue, so a simple fix. Finally we noticed that the skylights in the bathrooms seemed really grubby, particularly around the edges. Something like that wouldn't need cleaning every week, but doing it a couple of times a year would probably make a big difference. But just to repeat, we had a lovely stay and enjoyed our week in Wallingford and anyone who stays in Ninea will enjoy themselves.

Right on the Thames path so great for walking, plenty of room and very comfortable, Fabulous view of the river and very peaceful.

Good heating & shower facilities and excellent Wi-Fi and when the sun came out we enjoyed the fishing on the decking area beside the river.

  • "I love this house."

The setting is sublime, sitting as it does right on the Thames, with far reaching countryside views the other side, and a very quiet neighbourhood. The garden is open and spacious right down to the water and yet the house itself is very private and down a discreet little side path. Well fitted out with lots of large windows and sliding glass doors. Ratio of bedrooms/bathrooms is excellent. A very special little house.

  • "Lovely cottage in a perfect location."

Wallingford is well located for trips out and there are shops less than five minutes walk away. The cottage itself is very roomy and has all of the conveniences you need. It was clean and well prepared, sure there are a few minor areas which need a little tidying but nothing that detracted from a lovely weeks holiday. Highlight is the wonderful garden which stretches down to the river, ideal for watching the world go by.

  • "A great location let down by condition and cleanliness This is an idyllic spot but it should not be at the expense of the basics."

The property is rated by Sykes Holiday Cottages as 4 ticks “Excellent standard throughout”, but in my opinion it would be more correctly described as "old and tired". However, the main issue was the cleanliness. A number of reviews have mentioned that the property needs a deep clean, and it really does – I wish I had read them first!

  • "The location of the cottage is excellent and such a beautiful garden and setting."

Loved watching all the different boats and rowing. Unfortunately the cottage could do with a deep clean and a new kettle wouldn’t hurt. Tried to hoover but the hoover was useless and the tea towels were not suitable for drying anything so had to go and buy some. Sophie was very helpful with the few minor issues we had.

  • "The greatest luxury was having our own long section of the Thames River bank, framed by tall Weeping Willows at the bottom of the garden."

There's a table to sit at the water's edge. No passers by as the Thames Path loops round on the street behind the property. Whatever the weather watching the river is mesmerising and the more dramatic the weather the more the visual feast. It was a delight to find the old town of Wallingford peacefully on our doorstep with glorious walks along eg. crystal clear brooks (among many other lovely types of walk) complemented by access to Waitrose on foot in 8 mins. We drove into the Chiterns in 15 mins and rambled around Swyncombe and Stonor. Do not miss eating at The Nelson pub in beautiful Britwell Baldwin.

  • "We had a fantastic week at Ninea."

The weather was hot and dry which meant we could make full use of the wonderful garden, including a spot of fishing from the decking. The wildlife was fantastic, swans with signets, ducks, kingfishers and red kytes. The house is in easy walking distance of ample places to eat and drink, antique centre, chemist, supermarket, post office etc. We really enjoyed renting an electric boat for 2 hours on the Thames as well as taking a walk along the Thames path. We chose to leave the car parked at the house and took a bus ride into Oxford (great value at £6 return ticket 2019). The house was well equipped and comfortable but could do with a little updating in places. The very pale carpet did have some marks on it and I would have worried about adding to this if the weather had been wet. Also, the patio area and decking, was fantastic, but in need of a little maintenance. Overall we had a really relaxing week at Ninea and would have loved to stay longer. Wallingford is lovely and the people were really friendly. We would highly recommend Ninea and will definitely return in the future.

But The property was not as clean as we are used to. The carpet was dirty, and there was crumbs left on the coffee table. No coffee! Bathrooms could do with a thorough clean and maybe a fresh coat of paint. I was very disappointed as we have self catered for the last 8 years. At this moment in time I would not book with your company again. I know this is a personnel option

But dirt around inside rims of all patio doors/Windows and cobwebs inside skylights clearly not been cleansed for long time and as this is bungalow they are easily accessible. Property needs maintenance, glazing old and condensation in all rooms each morning, one bedroom still has single glazing and looks bad. Sealant in all bathrooms coming away, loo seat loose, main bedroom door won't shut, constantly running tap in cloaks toilet, couldn't use shower as unable to turn dial- did text housekeeper and she said previous guest must have turned it too tight. Clearly not checked before we arrived and I didn't try to force it in case it broke. Lock to back door unable to remove key once locked! Some wall and ceiling paintwork needs attention. I don't dig deep looking for problems all of this was obvious from outset. Location and space property offered was excellent but for the price and rating I expected a much better maintained property.

The property

Hidden along a footpath in Wallingford, the large black door to this detached cottage gives no idea to the passer-by of what delights await guests behind it.

Stepping into this spacious holiday home the first thing that greets you is the welcoming feeling.

Large and comfortable, this self-catering cottage offers families and couples the perfect spot to take a weekend break or a long relaxing holiday.

With four bedrooms, three with views across the river to the rural landscape beyond of the Chiltern Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the king-size double with patio doors to the raised terrace and the large wrap around sitting room, this is an ideal holiday hotspot.

If you are lucky enough to be celebrating a special event or birthday while staying at the cottage, the dining room is perfect for entertaining and seats all guests admirably.

The well-equipped and fitted kitchen is what would be expected in a beautiful riverside home with double doors to close it off from the rest of the living area.

But the real star of this vacation is the garden with a river mooring.

Cascading lawns run down to meet the decking where you can watch passing boats and cheer on the rowers as they cut through the water or even hire a boat for the day.

Why not take a book and a cool drink and settle down to enjoy the tranquillity of the local birdsong, the sound of the river and the bells of the neighbouring St Leonards Church?

Take a stroll through the quaint lanes of Wallingford and explore this quintessential English town with its tea rooms and local shops, pubs and restaurants.

Why not look up what is showing at the theatre which is located in the town square?

And if you think you may have seen this square before your visit and you are a fan of Midsomer Murders, then you have, Wallingford is the original Causton.

But its link to detectives goes back further than Midsomer Murders, Wallingford was the home, until her death in 1976, of Agatha Christie and she is buried nearby in Cholsey.

Further afield you have the delights of Henley-on-Thames with its annual Regatta, or Oxford with its long history and dreaming spires.

But whatever you decide to do on this holiday, or the next, the welcome of Ninea awaits your return.

About the location

WALLINGFORD

Dorchester 4.7 miles; Didcot 6.3 miles; Abingdon 10.7 miles; Oxford 13.2 miles; Henley-on-Thames 13.6 miles; Reading 14.6 miles.

Wallingford has a history dating back to King Alfred and it was at Wallingford that William the Conqueror crossed the Thames with his army, before marching on London. Wallingford Castle was built at his command to cement it's royal importance, and during its lifetime has played host to many royal visitors including King John, Henry Vl and Edward the Black Prince, to name but a few. Unfortunately, what remains of it now is only impressive earth works but some of the stones were re-used to build the St Mary-le-More Church which can be found near the centre of the town. Wallingford has been host to many different trades and industries during the centuries, including malting and iron foundries, but it was always a market town and still is to this day with a weekly market held every Friday where you can buy everything from unique gifts to fruit and fish. However it's connection with fictional detectives and quaint country villages may have started when the author Agatha Christie took up residence in Winterbrook House and lived there with her husband for over thirty years. Creator of Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, she was president to the Sinodum Players who regularly present plays at the now converted Corn Exchange in the market square. Look up what may be showing during your visit. In later years Wallingford has become more recognisable as "Causton" in the very popular TV series "Midsomer Murders". Walks and even driving trails for this often watched series can be followed by using the leaflets available from the tourist information centre, shown in the programme as Causton Town Hall; with the town square a focal point. You never know you may even become an "extra" if filming is taking place on the day you take a stroll around the town. A short drive from Wallingford and you can be in Henley-on-Thames with its river walks, pubs, shops and restaurants. "Henley Royal Regatta" takes place every year at the end of June and attracts thousands of visitors. Held over five days this is seen as part of the social season. Oxford with its dreaming spires is not only home to one of England's greatest universities but is certainly a city to explore while staying in this part of Oxfordshire. Wallingford is a perfect location for a holiday with a difference, a lovely town with a warm welcome.
