  • "Really can’t fault the place and facilities, only criticism would be whoever cleans it needs to make sure curtains and rings fully attached."

Some areas ready for a tickle up but as this is clearly a busy and popular cottage it is only wear and tear. Kitchen amazingly equipped, just needs a frying pan for my fried eggs lol That pleased am looking to book again this year later on. Oh and the sink in the bathroom is slow to drain, probably just needs descaling. Again thanks as returned home totally relaxed.

  • "From the moment we arrived we realised how absolutely dire the property was."

The windows are old 1st generation double glazed, some with holes through the glass and one with a note stuck to it saying not to open, the ones that did open operated poorly. The property was generally filthy throughout, with years and years of ground in built up grime. The property looks like it has had no maintenance, upkeep or upgrading for decades. The electrical equipment hasn’t been tested for 5 years and the ‘induction hob’ is not induction at all, it’s a two ring convection hob that doesn’t perform very well. The log burner is far too big for the property and I would be concerned with its safety as there was no HETAS certificate present in the property and no visible co2 monitor within range of it. The wardrobes were stuffed with stale smelling spare bedding, I wouldn’t hang anything in them. The beds are uncomfortably hard (and very old). Paint is peeling off every wall, the patio doors are difficult to operate and lock, even when you’re quite strong. The towels weren’t adequate to be used for the dog. I had to go shopping for new towels, throws and cushions for the beds and sofa before we could do anything. Generally just very disappointing. The most adequate succinct description would be that the property is like the ‘before’ pictures on Homes Under the Hammer. I complained to Sykes who did not wish to take any responsibility at all for a property that they are happily promoting and taking a fee for. The owner considers that there is nothing wrong with it!

The cottage is a basic no frills place to have a great holiday and not worry about damaging any expensive furniture and fittings. The electrical equipment has all been tested with certificate. The windows and hinges have been replaced after a short weight by the window company. The cottage is thoroughly cleaned before new guests arrive by a cleaning company. The cottage is basic and is not luxurious as the guests can enjoy and not worry about damaging an expensive furniture and fittings. The towels are renewed every months and again are not too of the range luxurious cotton but fit for purpose. We have many guests who seem to love the cottage and it's location and Return again and again. There are other very luxurious properties in the area. We offer a very reasonable price for the outstandingly beautiful area fantastic scenery local award winning pub and restaurant and beautiful beach headland on the doorstep without having to drive in the car. We try to keep our guests happy so they return to have a great time. Property Owner

Best of all is the situation, looking down to the bay at Borthwen, 5 minutes' walk away, and over the water to Snowdonia. There is plenty of decking and garden space to enjoy the views, and indeed the Milky Way under the dark skies. We've already booked again for next year.

  • "Pros - fantastic location for the beach and the white eagle pub, lovely views from the property and very quiet and relaxing area."

Cons - check-in time 5.30pm and check-out time 9am. Given the late check-in time I would have thought the property was being extensively cleaned but we didn't find this to be the case. Property was not very clean. Very uncomfortable and outdated sofas and beds. Although there is a dryer, we would have appreciated a washing line to hang clothes from. There was no welcome package, not even any hand soap in the bathroom was provided.

  • "Beautiful location, superb views, plenty of wildlife and very peaceful."

We loved seeing the jets from RAF Valley! However, we were let down by the level of cleanliness and comfort with cobwebs in every room, dusty skirting boards, awful smell in the kitchen like stale milk, leather sofa covered in dog hair, duvet covers with broken fastenings and mouldy shower cubicle. We rang the owner to tell her about this and she was shocked but very helpful, she contacted her son who called to see us and asked the cleaning company to send a cleaner the same day. The cleaning was done on the Tuesday of our one week stay. Given the late check in time on Saturday (5.30pm) we felt the cleaning didn’t reflect the time that should have been spent on it and was long term neglect. The check out time was 9am. We left on the Friday evening so really lost a day of our holiday as it would have been a push getting my disabled Mum ready. The cottage would benefit from a refurb and some tlc, with 3 adults and 1 child the sofa and chair didn’t really meet our needs, the sofa bed was grubby and dated and was too uncomfortable to sit on as an extra sofa. Some of the electric sockets were also loose, some of the windows were stuffed with paper to fill the gaps and the shower doors were fixed in position which meant that my disabled Mum couldn’t use it. A small step into the dining room also posed a problem for her limited mobility. The decking fence was in need of repair, however this was a lovely place to sit and was private and not overlooked. We would definitely return to the cottage if it is updated and refurbed , it’s a pity the photos don’t show the current condition of the property.

It is a beautiful place in a perfect location and we felt we had a really relaxed stay. The only downside here is the property is looking a little tired and in need of a little TLC. The bed linen was very clean and fresh, as were the towels in the bathroom, but there were many cobwebs, it was a little dusty and there was a bad smell in the kitchen by the fridge, similar to spilt milk which had not been cleaned.

The sofa isn't very comfy and is very low and was difficult for myself and parents to get up from. The lamp in the main bedroom was a bit dodgy as kept flickering when the wire was touched. Some lights the bulbs where blown. There wasn't any welcome pack on arrival so make sure you take the basics with you, also no instructions on rubbish disposal.

  • "My second time staying at Ty Woods."

It is in a lovely location just a five minute walk from Rhoscolyn Beach and with the whole south/west of the island within easy reach. Shopping for provisions is good with two stores a short drive away and a Tesco Extra a 15 minute drive. There's a dog friendly restaurant/pub just 200yds away (book in advance - the White Eagle is always busy, even in off season.) The cottage itself is spacious, clean, tidy and well presented with everything you could need for a comfortable week away. In particular the kitchen now has a dishwasher (bring tabs) washing machine and tumble dryer plus the usual accessories. In the lounge I see the TV has been upgraded since my last visit and is now a large screen Hitachi complete with a basic Sky TV package. There is a Netflix link on the remote and if you already have the service at home you can log into your account here to use whilst away from home, but don't forget to log out at the end of your stay! All in all, a lovely week away. Thank you!

Make sure you take the basics as there was no welcome pack at all and you are miles from shops. There wasnt the expected fire starting pack. when I asked about it I was told it was stopped to prevent spreading Covid however 2 brand new copies of magazines were provided, puzzling choice. It is a really quiet location. You only need to be careful with the roads, there is only space for 1 car at a time. The cottage is really cute, but you need to update the pictures on your web.The bedrooms were enough for an holiday and had plenty of storage. In the kitchen we could find everything that was great. It needed to be a bit more cleaned, there was lots of cob webs especially in the leaving room. Because the floors are so light they get dirty quick we end up buying a mop and cleaning frequently. The weather wasn’t to great and we find out that 1 of the windows in the living room couldn’t get shut, and we forgot to mention when someone come to the door and asked if all was ok.

We found the seating uncomfortable for us at our age, the leather suite was too low and the other sofa too nigh and too far back to sit in it. The leather suite had a cover on which was well and truly stuck and surely should have been washed between visitors The lighting in the cottage was four pairs in the lounge - of which only one bulb working in each pair making 4 lamps in total. In the kitchen the front three lamps one was not working where the back 3 only had one bulb working. We did not appreciate the beautiful views around affected by the hideous, wreck of a caravan which from your photo showed no sign of its decrepit and disgusting state. We appreciate the lady owner is ill, housebound and receiving home care but I am only just mobile after a fall and I had a job with two sticks getting over the gravel from the car to the cottage, I would suggest that other less mobile visitors were pre-warned.

It was great to be so close to the beach. The owner was friendly and helpful and lives next door, though we didn't actually know that at first so that could have been made clearer, unless we missed something in the pre-stay emails. The oven wasn't working but she had already asked an engineer to see to it and that happened as quickly as practicable given it was a bank holiday. A couple of minor things- a full size cafetiere or coffee maker would have been good as we were 4 coffee drinkers and there was only a 1 cup cafetiere. And the shower leaked through the join onto the floor. Not big things but just to mention.

The property

This lovely, single-storey detached cottage is situated opposite the owners' home, in the scattered village of Rhoscolyn, on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey.

Ideal for families or friends, this cottage is superbly located for access to the beach and coastline, which is just a two minute walk from the cottage, and even closer to the popular country inn visited by guests from miles around.

As you step into the hall you will immediately feel relaxed by your surroundings, with a door leading through to the fitted kitchen in front of you, which will provide you with all the requirements needed for a family holiday.

A welcoming sitting room offers views across grassland to the beach and beyond, and comfy sofas with a warming woodburner adds further character and atmosphere to the room, and will have you kicking off your shoes and warming your toes in front of the stove after a paddle in the sea.

A small step from the hall takes you down into the dining room, where you can sit and relax with home-cooked food and a fine bottle of wine, enjoying good company long into the evening.

Two bedrooms lead off the dining room, a twin bedded room and a master double room with en-suite toilet and sliding glass doors leading onto a small patio and decking area, which is slightly elevated to make the best of the views to the sea, and affords an ideal spot to enjoy a refreshing drink whilst watching the sun go down at the end the day, or dine alfresco using the barbecue.

Rhoscolyn beach is sandy and safe, located in a sheltered shallow bay, ideal for small dinghies and canoes, and will offer hours of enjoyment for children, crabbing or snorkelling around the rocky cliffs.

Alternatively, perhaps a stroll along the headland is more your thing, in which case you will be delighted to discover the 125 miles of Anglesey Coastal Path which runs past the beach.

Ty Woods Cottage is in an excellent location for a memorable seaside holiday, whatever the time of year.

About the location

RHOSCOLYN

Valley 2 miles; Trearddur Bay 3 miles; Holyhead 5 miles.

Located on Holy Island, three miles from Trearddur Bay, Rhoscolyn is a small village with a church and primary school and is the most southerly place on Holy Island. Rhoscolyn also offers an excellent pub on the lane down to the beach, which is renowned for its gastro food, and the beach itself with its slipway, ideal for small dinghies and power boats, is a popular family destination throughout the summer owing to the sheltered cove and gently sloping sands. Also excellent cliff-top walks can be enjoyed and an abundance of wildlife can be seen, often including seals on the headland. Just two miles away is the village of Valley, which has a Post Office, chemist, shops and eating places, plus the nearby resort of Trearddur Bay is situated on the western shore of the island and is truly beautiful with a great sweep of low grassy coastline indented with rocky coves and fine Blue Flag sandy beaches. There are shops, pubs and restaurants in Trearddur Bay itself and nearby Holyhead offers a wider range of amenities, including a very good leisure centre, supermarkets, harbour front, a marina, the world’s second longest breakwater and exciting day trips to Dublin on the ferry. Watersports, bathing, sailing, windsurfing and horse riding are the main activities in the summer months, plus golfers will enjoy the excellent Holyhead 18 hole links golf course, and the area is also a great place for nature lovers with renowned birdwatching at the South Stack Lighthouse RSPB Reserve. An excellent location with plenty to see and do!
