At over 1200ft, the former mining village and now conservation area of Leadhills is Scotland's second highest village. It is home to The Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway which is Britain's highest narrow gauge adhesion railway. The area also boasts Britain's highest golf course and the surrounding hills host gold panning in the burns. Indeed the nearby village of Wanlockhead is home to the annual Scottish and British Gold Panning Championships. The towns of Biggar and Moffat offer sightseeing and shopping trips. The spectacular Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate is an ideal family experience offering, not only the castle and its gardens, but also fishing, shooting, cycling, walking and a calendar of events throughout the year. The cosmopolitan cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh are around an hour away and the attractive forests and coast of Dumfries and Galloway are close enough to ensure that there is something for everyone. One of ‘Scotland's High Places’, Leadhills is ideally located for touring central and southern Scotland.

Within driving distance of this Leadhills holiday cottage are the towns of Biggar and Moffat, plus the Drumlanrig Castle is well worth a visit.
