  • "Our second visit, love the cottage."

It is very warm and cozy.our only problem was the TV,we could get the apps ect but couldn't get a signal for normal television programmes. The instructions for one remote didn't match the remote provided and therefore No Signal on TV screen. But it made a nice change not watching TV,reading, talking, puzzles etc instead. A lovely holiday once again, great cottage and location.

  • "Cleaning and maintenance could be improved."

Wi-fi password needs updating in book and on website Downstairs curtain falls off (it actually fell down onto my niece, she got 2 black eyes and a bruised nose) There were chipped cups and a cracked glass in the cupboard. Could do with a few more mugs. Bathroom tile is cracked and one of the silicone strips has a loose loop (my Mum caught her foot in this, she feel backwards and slashed 2 of her toes and bruised her ankle) No fire starter pack (only a bundle of magazines/papers, 1 log and 1 firelighter) I don't consider this as a starter pack! No washing line, we bought one There's a loop on the back door seal, another potential trip hazzard Porch setee - certainly past it's best, not suitable to sit on

We are so sorry to hear about the accidents your family have had at the cottage and we hope they have had a speedy recovery, we will certainly check those things out, no mention of a cracked tile by the previous repeat guest, or any issue with the curtains. It is always best to mention anything like this at the time of your stay, so any damage can be inspected straight away. This is most unusual as you can see from the many positive reviews we have had. We will update the WiFi information as soon as possible, (the password can also be found on the back of the hub), this has arisen due to replacing the hub and TV with new. There should be sufficient fuel to start a fire in the woodburner on arrival if required so apologies there were not a few more logs for you, if you had mentioned this while there, we could have arranged for a few more to be brought to the cottage for you. There is also a toilet roll in the bathroom and downstairs toilet, washing up liquid, a dish cloth, tea bags, coffee and sugar, cling film and kitchen foil, dishwasher tabs and also dog biscuits, a ball for your pet if wanted, and poo bags supplied as a starter for guests. As we are a self catering cottage, we do not supply anything further I’m afraid and I’m sorry you feel this is not enough but we will take on board your comments. Chips and cracks to glasses and crockery made by guests sometimes cannot be helped, so when these are brought to our attention or noticed we will replace as soon as possible so thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are always looking to improve the cottage so take on board your comments although I’m sure you can appreciate as a 3 star cottage we don’t pretend to be anything more than homely which is something that many of our repeat guests really enjoy. Easy access to nice places to eat and good walks. We really enjoyed our stay. A couple of small things (but didn’t spoil our stay) The log burner glass was really dirty so you couldn’t see the flames. We cleaned it the best we could but it clearly hadn’t been done for some time. Single bedroom could do with a wall light above the bed and tiny table or shelf to put a drink / travel clock on.

The house was really comfortable and it was lovely to be able to sit outside in the garden in the sunshine. The house was well equipped in each area. • "This was our second visit to Dermot Cottage which we like very much and find very comfortable and homely."

The large bed is extremely comfortable (don’t know about the singles as we haven’t tried them but the two smaller bedrooms look cosy for children) and the shower is excellent. Everything is supplied in the kitchen including a big fridge freezer; very useful for a self catering holiday. The back garden is well kept and a sun trap. Our dog did escape on both visits and we had to use a couple of garden chairs to block the holes in the hedge. He is a bit of an escape artist but one side of the garden could do with mesh to stop dogs getting out; the other side is walled and there is mesh along the bottom. Outside of the back door and under the lounge window where the garden furniture sits could do with a power wash to get rid of the moss, etc., which becomes slippy when it rains. The dog treats, and Prosecco for us were a lovely surprise and much appreciated. As well as there being amazing walks from the doorstep Dermot Cottage is well placed for exploring the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and look forward to returning.

The cottage itself was excellent and the extras were unexpected - dishwasher tablets, tea and coffee, tinfoil etc etc. We have rented many cottages in Scotland and most provide a little, such as tea, to get the holidaymaker started, but very few provide this level. Also, Amanda was extremely helpful and friendly; we felt at home immediately.

It was ideally located. Not far from all the facilities in the village on foot; and also great for exploring the local area by car. The cottage was exceptionally comfortable, clean and well appointed. Although we did eat out in the village, it was great that we were able to cook proper 'home-cooked' meals using the equipment provided. The children loved 'Ginger' the rocking horse and enjoyed watching the odd DVD from the well stocked library. We all had a lovely week's holiday and look forward to returning in the future.

Loved the log burning stove and we had to keep buying more wood as we got through so much of it. Double bedroom was very comfortable and felt like you were sleeping in cottonwool. The garden was lovely and we actually collected enough blackberries to make a fruit crumble for our tea ! Have already recommended Sykes to two friends and one is already looking at a cottage in the Isle of Skye for next year. We hope to book another cottage next year.

  • "The house was so much bigger than we thought it would be and on entering it had a home from home feeling."

It was so easy to live in, easy to keep clean with the tiled floors and very nicely carpeted stairs and bedrooms. The bedrooms were very nice, especially the master bedroom. There was a bit of a problem with the fancy basin tap in the bathroom which was difficult to regulate and either trickled or spurted over the top of the basin. As we did not have the best weather it was good to have the wood burner but there was only enough wood for the first evening and we were unable to get more logs locally. It meant we needed to use the central heating which we would have preferred not to do. Perhaps from the owners point of view it might be more economical to leave a plentiful supply of wood. We enjoyed our stay very much and would certainly revisit.

The Cottage had everything thought of.... things for very young minds, DVD's for the family, books to while away the time, warm and cosy with the fire if you wanted, spacious for five people, and the garden was a haven for the wildlife , could sit and watch all day from within the sun room. The quality of the furniture and bedding was luxurious, beds and quilts were out of this world, so easy to get that good nights sleep. As for the shower, well, all I can say is raining heaven, you will struggle to get the time in the bathroom as you just don't want to get out!! Nothing had been too much trouble, everything thought of, Wi-Fi how to access, a fantastic instruction book of everything regarding the cottage even down to what buttons for the remote control for the TV to step by step to lighting the wood stove, nothing missed..... So accommodation top rate, as for the area, stunning! so many places to visit, the beaches are fantastic so get those picnics prepared.... We were a family of mixed age range 50's to 13 and all would go back again, we had the perfect holiday, Thank you Dermot Cottage.

About the location

GATEHOUSE OF FLEET

Kirkcudbright 8 miles; Newton Stewart 15 miles; Castle Douglas 15 miles.

Peaceful in its pastel colours, the small country town of Gatehouse of Fleet lies on the Solway Firth, in the midst of Dumfries & Galloway countryside, with good sandy beaches a five-minute drive away. The town was founded in the 1760s as a mill community, and today the nearby Mill on the Fleet - a visitor centre in a former bobbin mill - tells the tale of Gatehouse’s cotton-spinning days. Today, there are several shops in the town including a small supermarket, chemist, bank and Post Office, along with two book/gift shops, a kilt-making centre and two cafes. All four pubs in the town have restaurant facilities and welcome children. Castle Douglas, a 15-minute drive away, offers an extensive range of shops, Threave Gardens and boating on Carlingwark Loch.
