The picturesque village of the Isle of Whithorn, though no longer an island, nestles around its harbour on the southernmost tip of the Machars Peninsula, designated as an outstanding conservation area. The village has a long history of seafaring and trade, dating back to the Vikings. The arrival in 397 of Ninian, Scotland's first missionary and saint, is thought to be the beginning of Scotland's Christian history and the remains of the 13th century chapel can be seen at the end of the harbour. A short climb will take you to the distinctive white tower - the Cairn - which has been a mariner's landmark for close on two centuries. Today the harbour is popular with visiting leisure sailors and with local boats fishing for crabs and lobsters. The area is steeped in history with numerous sites ranging from Mesolithic and Iron Age forts, standing stones and ‘cup and ring’ markings, an 11th Century chapel and castles from the era of Robert the Bruce. Wigtown, Scotland's first book town, is a short drive, and has over a dozen book shops in which one can easily lose an hour or two! With beaches, forests, golf courses, gardens and churches to visit, this is an ideal base for discovering this corner of Scotland.

All ground floor and tastefully decorated throughout, this Isle of Whithorn cottage has two bedrooms, a double and a single, a well equipped kitchen and a comfortably furnished sitting room with a dining area and French doors affording open views to the coast and the village. Outside this Isle of Whithorn cottage is a patio and open lawned garden which leads down to the coast, an ideal place to relax and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. The historic village of Isle of Whithorn is a traditional fishing village and the spectacular coastline can be explored in both directions. Two hotels offer food and drink and a chance to unwind after a day’s exploring. The south west of Scotland offers a mix of history, beach and coastal walks, forest walks and cycle trails as well as delightful towns like Dumfries and Wigtown, Scotland’s Book Town, where you can lose yourself amongst the many bookshops and cafes.
