Location: Skibbereen, County Cork

Leap 7 miles; Baltimore 8 miles; Glandore 9 miles; Rosscarbery 12 miles.

Along with the enthralling West Cork Arts Centre and Skibbereen Heritage Centre, Skibbereen boasts a lively shopping area, restaurants, pubs and a guaranteed warm welcome from the inhabitants of this unpretentious market town! With its local seafood and meat, bread from its own bakery, as well as a country and farmers' markets once a week, Skibbereen's native produce is clearly a source of local pride. Located right in the middle of some of Ireland's most striking scenery, it offers sandy beaches, out-of-the-way coves, fast-flowing rivers, peaceful lakes, hills and forests - all of which is easily accessible for cyclists, walkers and those arriving by car. For the sporty type, there are 18 holes of golf and an indoor sports centre offering facilities such as badminton, tennis and a gym plus sauna. Along the rugged West Cork coastline, Leap and Rosscarbery are close by, not to mention Glandore, Ballydehob, Schull, Baltimore and the charming town of Bantry. Further afield but not too far by car is Kinsale - famous for its food, it is often referred to as the "gourmet capital of Ireland". In the area, there is even dolphin and whale watching opportunities - but even if you don't spot one, the array of beautiful beaches and scenic cliffs is simply a walker's delight and the ideal location for exploring the unspoilt parts of West Cork.
