The property is fitted out to a high specification, very comfortable and is located in a lovely peaceful setting, with no traffic noise whatsoever and a lovely terrace to sit out and enjoy the views- all very relaxing. It is well situated for travelling to other parts of the county as we wanted to access several parts of the coastal path and also take a day trip over to the Isles of Scilly from Penzance. The local pub, the Miners Arms, is within easy walking distance an we enjoyd several visits there. Jim and Serena, the hosts, were very warm and welcoming, and a great source of information when asked. All in all quite superb and we highly recommend it.

  • "Ideally positioned within a few minutes walk of the Miners Arms who serve food daily from 12pm - 9pm, and all meals were delicious."

Well equipped cottage with enough place settings so you could fill the dishwasher if required before needing the plates (though we washed up by hand!). A note to anyone staying in the cooler months - the heating is on a timer set by the people in the main house and the times seemed to be limited, not necessarily ideal for a holidaymaker. Obviously this shouldn't be an issue in the summer months.

Thank you for your feedback however I can’t understand why you didn’t just ask us (the owners) to alter the heating timer to your individual preferences which we would have gladly done, as we are the “people who live above”. This is especially disappointing as we greeted you upon your arrival and stated that if there was anything we could help you with you only had to tell us and we would do our best to oblige, also stated in our guest information booklet and in a framed note above the sitting room thermostat. • "We did not know that there would be people above us and booked this for peace and quiet."

You can very clearly hear footsteps and on Sunday morning we were woken by a dog running around and barking at 6.15 am. The pillows need replacing as VERY flat, we went out and bought our own pillows after he first night. We were also disappointed in leaving when we knocked the owners door to say we were leaving early, we were not asked if we had had a good stay or whether everything had been ok. I would have thought something would have been said as we were leaving early. Having said all this, the views are great and it was clean and tidy

Thank you for your review which is both a surprise and disappointment to us as you did not bring any of your issues to us during your stay so that we could try to resolve them. We met your husband on arrival and at the time invited him to let us know if there was anything we could help with. We only met yourself on the Thursday morning, at which time you advised of your early departure and informed me that you were going to extend your time in Cornwall by staying with a friend who lived nearby. Recollections of this conversation may vary, however, you made no mention of the issues you have raised in your review. The description of Secret Garden on the website clearly states “ground floor apartment forming part of the owners old chapel” and photos of the outside show a two-storey domestic dwelling. It is incumbent upon guests to read descriptions carefully beforehand and if they have any queries to contact the company for clarification. Comprehensive sound insulation has been installed between floors and internal walls of the building to minimise, as far as possible, sound transmission in both directions between the apartment and the owner’s residential accommodation. Complaint about the pillows is something we have not encountered before and it could be considered as a somewhat subjective and personal preference. If, however we had been made aware of this during your stay we would have happily arranged supply of different pillows. Sykes Customer Review Policy clearly states on their website that guests should raise any issues with owners (or representatives) as soon as possible during their stay so that solutions can be found promptly. Our Secret Garden Information folder in the apartment also clearly encourages guests to do this. As owners we are very proud of the many returning guests and overwhelmingly good feedback that we have received over very many years. We would respectfully direct any new potential guests to read our many other reviews. Property Owner

We drove out every day to a slightly different point and on the coastal path for fantastic walks then had supper outside on the terrace. But the village has a great pub within 5 mins walk if you don't fancy cooking. The apartment has just about everything you could want, better equipped that just about anywhere we have ever stayed. The only addition could potentially be reclining chairs for reading and relaxing in the garden. But that is very picky because the chairs there are plenty comfortable and we enjoyed our post walk cuppa and books in some wonderful sunshine. • "How deceiving photographs can be!"

The fixtures and fittings were of basic standard. The mattress was poor. But most disappointing was the inadequate sound insulation between the two floors. We could hear the television, conversations and the barking dog upstairs! Frankly, I did expect a better quality experience for the £400+ figure for just three nights in November! This property was overpriced and a disappointing example of Sykes ability to accurately position this property with their pricing strategy.

Thank you for your feedback. We would like to reassure that the photos on the website, taken by the company, are an accurate representation of the property. We would point out that your visit took place in early November whilst the photoshoot was carried out in early summer. Since the photoshoot, we have carried out various minor upgrades and improvements as part of ongoing routine maintenance and renewals, including new carpeting throughout in early 2020. Comprehensive acoustic insulation is installed in ceilings and walls between Secret Garden and our own accommodation to minimise any sound transmission and we are sorry if you were disturbed. Shortly after your arrival you were invited to engage with us if there was anything you required, and consequently, we are disappointed that you chose not to let us know at the time when we could have taken steps to resolve the matter immediately. The bed is a king-sized Sealy Posturepedic divan. The mattress is turned regularly and on checking since your feedback we have found it to be evenly supportive and without any sag. We do not accept bookings for short breaks and advertised prices set by the company for Secret Garden are for a weekly stay with no discount for a short break option. The pricing structure is commensurate with the local market. As owners, we continue to be very proud of the overwhelmingly positive reviews that we have received from the many guests at Secret Garden over many years. Property Owner

  • "We had a very enjoyable stay."

The location is marvellous and the property is very comfortable and well maintained with a nice view; very quiet and restful. A few comments: - Other Sykes properties we have stayed at had a folder of useful local information, and this would have been helpful eg. suggested local eateries/takeaways with comments; local beaches and their strengths/weaknesses; hand-drawn map of the Mithian village with amenities marked; perhaps also for St Agnes. - We were woken each morning at 7 am by the sound upstairs of the dogs waking and running about; we are early risers so not a problem for us, but some visitors might not be satisfied!

Thank you for your feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your holiday. We are sorry that we have found it necessary to remove our hard copies of booklets of local information at this time. Due to Covid owners were advised by Sykes to remove all items from their properties that could not be effectively disinfected during changeover cleaning. These included such items as guidance folders, books, maps, etc (of which we have many) and we complied with this advice. As Covid cases remain worryingly high in Cornwall before, during and after your visit we thought it wise to continue to follow the company advice. If you had asked we would have gladly helped and suggested suitable internet sites and local apps. We apologise if you were disturbed. Property Owner

The cottage is well equipped with everything that you would want to use whilst on holiday. We were lucky with the weather, which meant that we were able to sit out in the lovely sun trap garden for breakfast every day. The garden was especially wonderful as the roses were in full bloom whilst we were there and the local birdlife were really enjoying the feeders, providing endless entertainment. Mithian is a fantastic location, the local pub (Miner's Arms) is brilliant, and you are within walking distance of Healey's Cyder Farm and the Callestick Ice Cream Farm. Slightly longer walks can take you to the sea at St Agnes, Porthtowan, Chapel Porth and Perranporth, and there is easy access to the A30 to get around the rest of Cornwall. • "Existing reviews were generally very good so our expectations were quite high."

Lots of thought has gone into this place. It was well laid out and well equipped. We loved the huge window ledges which added useful space to the bathroom for toiletries, kitchen for work surface and bedroom for spreading out books, makeup etc. It was a mix of the practical and style with the gorgeous views out of the bedroom and living rooms, plus the nod to the past with the arched window in the bathroom. It was clean and in good repair and there was a de-humidifier in the hall to be left on during the day to keep condensation at bay. There are 4 rooms and it is laid out from a long corridor. The living room, bedroom and kitchen all have sunlight streaming in in the mornings if you are lucky with the weather! With Covid prevention in mind, we decided we would avoid pubs (although we did go in 2 for all of about 15 minutes) and restaurants, and bought up 6 days worth of meals from M&S on the way down. We took most provisions and enough to make sandwiches for every day we were there. We went out during every day and loved coming back to this base, heating up our M&S meal and watching Netflix which is available on their television. Wifi worked fine. There was hand gel at the entrance to the property. There is a bar code for the Covid App in the doorway. The owners made contact via text although we did see them a couple of times at a distance during the week. Very friendly. We were asked to take our own pillows, we took pillow cases which were actually provided but we didn't use them. Towels were provided - again we took our own. The only slight issue for us is that me and my husband are used to a super-king bed at home (both of us are 6ft tall) and although this is a king size and comfortable, if you move without consideration for your partner it does bounce them around a little. We visited many places. We had mixed weather and tailored our trips to it. Cornwall is beautiful in autumn and we went 2 weeks prior to half-term so there weren't children around. The only disappointment was St Ives' streets. They were very busy and people generally passed much too close and weren't wearing masks. We chose to wear ours for this reason.

What comprehensive feedback which we are glad to read and think over. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to compose. So glad you enjoyed your stay at Secret Garden. Property Owner

In our opinion, any perception of a musty smell would have been more likely caused by the extremely heavy rain and strong winds from Storm Callum that unfortunately coincided with the first part of your holiday here. Only the external walls of the Chapel remain, all internal walls and fixtures are modern. Property Owner
