  • "Lowena was in a great position to explore ."

. well equipped.. very comfy bed .. we were disappointed to find only 1 heater for the downstairs and only a heated towel rail in the bathroom and bedroom heaters .. we were quite cold and had to use the heaters all the time to stay comfortable.. which wasn’t recommended in the details .. the weather wasn’t great in early March .. otherwise a good stay

  • "We had a lovely month staying in Lowena."

The cottage was clean and comfortable and is in the perfect position on the edge of St Just. The view from the front bedroom across the fields to the sea is wonderful and the added bonus is a space at the front to park your car. There are lots of walks from the cottage and the nearby Porth Nanven and Cape Cornwall are not to be missed. The centre of St Just is a 5 minute walk up the road and has everything you need in the way of food shops, pubs and cafes along with other useful facilities and the wonderful Kurt Jackson Gallery is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in art. The people here are very friendly. We have been coming to St Just for years and this area is definitely our favourite part of Cornwall. Lowena, on a quiet road, is an excellent base to explore and enjoy the area and we would happily stay here again.

  • "The cottage was very comfortable."

Well equipped and beds were a definite plus point. Parking outside was a boon given that parking in St. Just can be problematic but to be expected in small Cornish towns and villages. We thoroughly enjoyed our short-break at Lowena. Thank You.

  • "The location is great, the kitchen is well equipped and there was sufficient towels and hand soap provided."

Shops and cafes are within walking distance as is a wide range of walks which is great. Parking for one care outside is fine. The cottage would benefit from a deep clean as it is only superficially clean at the moment. The sofa and one chair are barely adequate for three and not suitable for four. The garden is neglected and needs leaves etc sweeping up and attention paying to the fence. Am glad we didn’t visit in colder weather as it felt chilly.

Thank you for your feedback, we have advised the owner of your comments. We hope you had a nice stay overall. Property Owner

  • "We had a fantastic holiday at Lowena, it's a great location with the centre of St Just a 10 min stroll away."

St. Just has plenty of shops to buy food, (the co-op is particularly good), pubs, galleries and plenty of scope for exploring. This part of Cornwall has an excellent bus service too so it's a great base for those without transport or if you fancy parking up and letting someone else do the driving! Cape Cornwall and Porth Nanven are both around 30 mins walk away, Porth Nanven being literally just down the road from the cottage! The cottage is quite small but not cramped, though it might be a bit of a squeeze with 4 people. The kitchen is very well-equipped and the fan oven is really efficient. The double bed is super comfortable with great quality linens, lovely warm duvets and extra soft blankets/throws. We didn't really use the garden, but it does have a built-in slate & stone bench at the bottom which isn't quite visible on the listing photo. You can buy logs for the wood-burner at the St Just co-op but they are much cheaper at the Spar in Pendeen. There are lots of books on the cottage shelves which is always a bonus! Due to the thick walls of this cottage, there isn't mobile signal inside, (on EE at least), but if you stand at the farm gate directly opposite the cottage there is signal there. You can also just see the sea in the distance and hear it when at the gate and the same view is visible from the twin bedroom window. The stairs in this cottage are quite steep and open plan, there isn't much of a landing at the top and the balustrade is quite low, so I feel this property may not be suitable for those with mobility/ balance issues or possibly visual impairments. There are also a couple of different levels in the lounge/kitchen, only slight but a possible trip hazard for those with aforementioned issues. If you need a taxi, I would highly recommend St Just Cars. We were travelling by public transport so needed to be picked up and taken back to Penzance when we arrived/left. They're really efficient, super friendly and knowledgeable. At time of writing, it's cash only payments. The locals are really friendly and welcoming, we instantly felt at home. We had a great time and were very happy to be back in Cornwall after 8 years!!

  • "This is a pleasant property in a quiet location on the edge of St Just, overlooking fields towards Cape Cornwall."

The beautiful Cot Valley is a short walk further on down the lane, and the shops & pubs are only 5 minutes walk away. The property itself is quite compact, but generally comfortable. There is almost no storage space for clothes in the main bedroom, but the bed itself was very comfortable, and the linen and towels were all very good quality. The bathroom was nice, with a bathtub and separate shower. The fact that the bathroom and second bedroom are both in effect accessed through the main bedroom (although there is a curtain), might be an issue if both bedrooms are being used by people who are not so closely acquainted. However, I think that this slight drawback is probably reflected in the pricing. The kitchen is quite narrow, but has everything you need, including a washing machine. The living/dining room was comfortable, and there was a good quality smart TV, and fast WiFi. My only real issue with the cottage was that it was difficult to keep the downstairs warm (I stayed at the end of March). There is only one heater downstairs, and it is sited underneath the open-tread staircase, so it is very good at heating the upstairs rooms, but struggled to have much effect in the living room. It may be that the property had been unoccupied before my arrival, but it took a couple of days before it felt a comfortable temperature, and I had to use the wood burner every evening. Overall, this is a nicely located cottage, which is good value. I would certainly consider staying here again.

  • "This pleasant and characterful cottage did what it said on the tin and was perfectly good value."

The small walled garden was a little claustrophobic but hey, it’s in St Just and not the open countryside. It was a challenge to abide by ‘no dogs upstairs’ with such an open plan arrangement and modesty upstairs would be hard to protect with the open plan bedroom 1 - not the place to stay if this is a concern! The main reason for the lower rating on facilities was the shower cubicle - complicated and unworkable, we had no option but to use the bath although we must say the bath was excellent! My wife would also have appreciated blinds in the bathroom (a previous grumble we had noted). All in all, an enjoyable stay, thank you.

Glad you had a good stay. New bathroom blinds are being fitted as soon as I can get Hillarys in to provide them. Till very recently a notice advised shower users to touch only the central knob unless they wanted to be massaged by the lovely extra jets, but another guest disliked the notice ! The bath is lovely, yes. Glad you enjoyed St Just. Property Owner

It ticks all our boxes for its location near the coast, great foe walking and near local shops and restaurants. The cottage is in a quiet location on the outskirts of St Just; very handy for the facilities in the town and a short walk to Cape Cornwall and the spectacular coast path leading south to Land's End and north/east towards St Ives. Everything about the cottage is comfortable and welcoming, including the log burner in the living room. Perfect for relaxing in the evening following a day out exploring the nearby countryside and coastline. Many thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback following your stay at Lowena, we are sorry to hear that on this occasion our housekeeper did not check the dishwasher, we have reminded her of the need to ensure this does not recur and apologise unreservedly. • "We have stayed in a lot of rental cottages in St Just as we visit friends there, this cottage was sadly not the best equipped."

The listing was quite misleading regarding the kithen as the photo only shower half. Also the yard was over grown with bushes from either side taking over, there was no where to sit outside as described in the listing apart from a concrete seat covered in bush debris! The yard was also dirty with lots of old pots with dead plants in them. When we arrived we found curdled milk in the fridge, and then noticed how the fridge didn't stay cold (we checked the settings). The dishwasher had dirty mugs inside it on our arrival also. We also noticed a very nasty smell in the kitchen, it smelt like something had died. We thought it was behind the fridge, but when we investigated it was the wooden kitchen door that had an awful smell to it, and was coated in grime. We think due to this smell there were a lot of flies. We found it difficult to sit at the table to eat as the chairs were too high to fit underneath ut so had to sit sideways on. We were a bit dissappointed when the owner contacted us to tell us that the cleaner must come in and take the rubbish, even though we offered to put the bins out on bin day as we do with every other cottage we stay at (we know the area very well). However, we contacted the cleaner directly to let her know we would do it and she was very helpful. However, on the plus side the bathroom was lovely and upstairs was very comfortable. The view over cot valley was nice.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to our feedback request. The fridge has now been replaced with a new one. We have fitted a new carpet in the livingroom and the housekeeper assures us that the dishwasher was empty before your arrival, however she will now make a point to ensure that the dishwasher is empty on changeover days. A folding garden table and chairs can be found under the stairs, but are not kept in the garden because of potential weather damage. Insecticide cannot be kept under the sink because of its toxicity, but would gladly supply it to adult tenants if asked. The housekeeper deals directly with refuse from the property because the local authority recently redefined holiday cottages as commercial buildings and no longer allows use of their wheelie bins. We are very sorry that you declined a cleaning of the property and a linen change halfway through your stay. We are moving the location of the seat cusions to the airing cupboard. Unfortunatley during the months of May and June, shrubs proliferate: We have asked this to be trimmed and tidied this week. This is a nineteenth century miner's cottage, the photographs of the cottage are authentic and were taken by us. We try to encourage guests to call us if they have a problem at any of the properties, we can then take action investigate and if needed repaired. We are pleased to hear that despite the points raised you enjoyed your stay at Lowena. Property Owner

The property

Located in St Just and a short walk from the dramatic Cornish coast, Lowena is one of ten cottages built around 1860 and has easy access to many of Cornwall’s great walks and tourist attractions.

Originally built as a tin miner’s cottage, Lowena, meaning ‘joy to you’ in Cornish, retains its character with its stone walls and woodburner that is perfect to sit by after a long day at Sennen Cove or Marazion.

The galley kitchen is well-appointed with all your cooking essentials.

From the living area, climb the carpeted open tread stairs to the first floor.

The stairs open into the master double bedroom.

There is a spacious tiled family bathroom beyond the bedroom.

The door at the top of the stairs leads into the twin room, which has a soothing colour scheme, beautiful sea and country side views.

To the rear of the cottage, you have access to the paved garden from the kitchen, where you can cool off with a drink during the summer months.

There is roadside parking at the front and the amenities of the town are just a stroll away.

Spend a day exploring Land's End, Britain's most south-westerly point and one of the country's most notable landmarks.

Take in the awe-inspiring scenery and breathe that fresh coastal air as you snap a photo by the famous signpost with your family and friends.

Further afield Penzance offers Penlee House, an art and history museum, Trengwainton Garden along with stunning Mount's Bay and so much more!

With plenty to offer and ideal for families, Lowena is a superb getaway.

About the location

ST JUST

Penzance 7.2 miles; St Ives 12.9 miles.

St Just is the nearest town to Land’s End and is situated approximately eight miles west of Penzance. The town itself is an ancient settlement that has a strong mining history and there are several monuments and prehistoric antiquities to visit including the Bronze Age settlement at Cape Cornwall. St Just is ideally located for visitors to explore the far west of Cornwall as it is situated on the edge of the moors and close to the beautiful north coast. In the centre of the town is Plain-an-Gwarry, a theatre used for miracle plays in medieval times, and in more recent times for the Lafrowda Festival.
