  • "We had a lovely stay, thankyou."

There were no tea towels in the kitchen and this was our biggest frustration over the weekend. The property is a little worn and well lived in, but it's comfortable and clean. My biggest issue with this overall booking was the difficulty in speaking with anybody to discuss our reservation ahead of our stay. I was desperately hoping to organise an early check in, was more than willing to be accommodating for how this might work (appreciating check outs and preparing the property), but trying to speak to anyone on the phone was impossible. The customer service when trying to accommodate the request to speak to someone was unhelpful and dismissive, it would take them days to respond to my queries and as a new representative was picking up would have to start the query all over again- their system does not log your previous enquiry. On the day of our reservation I received a voicemail from a very chirpy representative- the property was ready and we could check in from 2pm. Not particularly helpful when it's currently 1.30pm you've got 20 people arriving from all corners of the country and you yourself have a 3hour journey ahead. If you are looking to book this property, please be mindful of check-in times and the ability to liaise with anyone about your reservation ahead of time.

The luxurious welcome pack was much appreciated too! The accommodation is just perfect with space for everyone to enjoy but a cosy welcoming feel throughout. The boot room/foyer was a great asset for all our walking equipment, coats etc. Our evenings were extra special in the lounge, playing family games around the impressive log burner, after enjoying the very sociable dining room. It was lovely to be able to all eat together every evening. The enclosed garden was much appreciated by the children and the dogs and the games room was an absolute hit! With country walks from the door and close proximity to Stow town centre, South Hill Farmhouse was the perfect base to explore the area. Thank you so much for a fabulous week. Sandy

The house was perfect to bring friends or family together. It is a short walk to Stow on the Wold although to leave the house the road can be very busy to cross to reach the pavement on the opposite side. We didn’t use the garden because wrong time of year but it is huge and would be great in the summer! The house was warm on arrival with a lovely welcome box with local produce. Great stay.

Our family met up from across the country for a fantastic trouble and worry free Xmas. The accommodation layout worked well for us, the two kitchens coped easily with Xmas Dinner for 20, there was ample cutlery, crockery and glassware. The games room was enthusiastically used by all ages, and we only used our cars on the last day. We walked frequently, ran and cycled and loved the location. Without exception, everyone was impressed with the house. Many thanks for helping to make a memorable Xmas!

  • "The Aga was not working and we were only told the day before we arrived."

As the house is very large and caters for over 20 people, 2 ovens is not enough to cook a Christmas dinner and keep warm for that many people. Also the heating is quite complicated with 3 different settings but no instructions about it, and for the first night only one side of the house was heated so was really cold for some of our party. We did call first thing Saturday once the office was open and someone did arrive that afternoon but this should have been checked before our arrival as it was a really cold weekend. With a working aga and a fully heated house it would have been perfect, but I would worry about booking it again if these weren't considered important. Maybe a hostess trolley as a back up if the aga is not operational?

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry that you were disappointed about the Aga. Unfortunately, the Aga was serviced before your arrival and a small fault was detected that required it to be turned off. We then had to wait for the relevant part to be delivered, the timing of which was beyond our control. This has now been repaired. The heating was merely that the thermostat needed turning up-all is working fine. We have two kitchens so two ovens are available, along with 2 hobs (8 rings). We hope that all your party enjoyed your get together. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

The two well-stocked kitchens helped massively in terms of managing meal times with a large group. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all super comfortable and well-maintained and the facilities were on the whole excellent and exactly as described. The children loved the games room. The only recommendations would be to reset the WiFi boosters which are placed around the house but not in working order - so our devices kept dropping off the WiFi. Lots of parking onsite and perfect central location for exploring the Cotswolds. I would definitely recommend this property.

Thank you for this lovely review. We're delighted you and your family enjoyed your special celebration and found the property to be comfortable with excellent facilities. Great location, close enough to walk into Stow on the Wold (if you can brave crossing the very busy road outside). Incredibly well equipped kitchens. Beautiful garden with plenty of seating. Kids loved the games room. Only complaint but unfortunately did impact quite negatively on our stay was the flies in the property. There were consistently upwards of 10 flies in the kitchen and many in the corridors and other rooms. Fly screens on the external doors or some other fly controls are desperately needed.

Gorgeous fireplaces, lovely furniture, beautiful wisteria in May and lots of lovely touches in the house and garden. It was easily walkable to Stow and Cotswolds walks too. Very difficult to find a large house for 20 people where most bedrooms have their own bathroom. Our family has stayed there twice and found it comfortable and clean. It would be nice to have a slightly earlier entry time. After a long journey and with young children to feed and persuade into bed 6 oclock is late for access . The main road outside the property is extremely busy in both directions and crossing it needs care. Newcomers to the property would benefit from a clearer description to the access.

Plenty of space, enough lounge seating for all amd a perfect dining room for dinner. House is really well stocked with cutlery amd crockery, and the two kitchens helped us in terms of double oven and fridge space. We walked into Stow which is a 10 minute walk but the main road is unbelievably busy, cars driving fast and therefore very difficult to cross. Indeed the only negative is the road noise which was very obvious when in the lovely garden and also in the bedrooms on that side of the house.

Only drawbacks were lots of flies throughout the down stairs when we first arrived and during the whole week. Need to supply either a fly swat or some form of fly catcher. Also the large Smeg fridge in main kitchen had no shelves so had to use the one in the smaller kitchen, leading to lots of traipsing up and down the passage when preparing meals. Steps up to the garden from the games room very steep and narrow, need a handrail.

  • "Positives: We had a lovely stay at this well appointed house."

The house itself had lots of indoor and outdoor space where a large group could socialise together. There was more than enough crockery and large pans etc to cook at scale. The enclosed garden was fantastic for the dog and humans to have a good run round and the large tree swing was great for the teens. The bedrooms were all comfy and there were plenty of en suites and bathrooms to service us all. Water pressure and showers were good. The cottage was only a 15 minute walk into Stow on the Wold although as others have mentioned, crossing the busy main road is only for the able bodied teens and adults, otherwise driving is safer. Very friendly and helpful neighbours too which we discovered when we inadvertently sent a parcel to the wrong address. Negative: Just a couple of maintenance issues - there was a bucket in the window between the kitchen and games room to catch water when it rained. The main fridge (in the front kitchen) only had one shelf which limited how much could be stored in it, so frequent trips down the corridor to the extra fridges was required. Minor issues in terms of impact on our stay.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback on the wonderful South Hill Farmhouse.Happy to hear that the facilities were all suitable for your party. The fridge has new shelves arriving and will be put in to the fridge on their arrival, unfortunately the delivery time was longer than expected. We had a group of 20 family and friends for a celebration - all had an experience that exceeded our expectations. The facilities met our needs well. Guests from ages 9 to 82 were catered for - the games room & garden were very valuable for the younger generation! An issue with a shower was repaired on the day it was reported - excellent service. South Hill is ideal for large groups, good parking, plenty of rooms, an area for dogs to laze around, and generally space. The 2 kitchens provide lots of fridge and freezer space and room to cater for the larger group size. We located a local outside caterer for 2 meals - super quality and service. South Hill is ideal for large groups, plenty of parking, plenty of rooms, bathrooms and space. We loved having 2 kitchens and lots of fridge and freezer space and you couldn’t wish for any more cooking pots, pans or cooking space!! Games room a bonus! It obviously had been empty for a week or two since the last clean as on arrival there were many ants in the kitchen and lots of insects dead and alive in the bedrooms, shame these hadn’t been cleared!! Sykes cottages did send someone round with ant powder! What you fail to realise on reading the description of this place ( and let’s face it why would you dwell on it!) is that Fosse Way is very very busy main road full of cars and massive lorries careering at high speed along a 3 lane road. There is no pavement on the side of the road the property is on, only on the opposite side so to walk anywhere you have to brave crossing the road which can take minutes and is nerve wracking with older people and young kids. So a “5 min stroll” into Stowe is rather more like an raised heart rate road cross followed by walking on a narrow pavement up the side of a very busy road. So in summary the house is great but better to be aware of the road as I would not let my ( early teenage) kids ever cross it on their own. We were hoping they would be able to wander in and out of Stowe but this stopped that!!

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a constructive feedback, We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and we looking forward to welcoming you again soon. We will add the comments you mentioned to the website for future guests because there is not much to be done regarding the road. Much appreciated. Property Owner

Regrettably, we had to take the decision just before your stay to close this wardrobe as there had been a leak from the chimney breast above in the heavy rains. • "The farmhouse provided a near perfect setting for a gathering of friends to celebrate a big birthday and the arrival of 2020."

The bedrooms and bathrooms were good; the lounge and snug, with their wood burners, very welcoming; the two kitchens great for all the cooking; the dining room ideal for the big meals; and the games room was fun. Anticipating that a farmhouse in winter might be a tad chilly, we came with ample woollen jumpers, etc. Not needed - it was a lovely warm house throughout (once we'd mastered the heating). The Aga provided more than enough heat for the main kitchen, which became the focal point for breakfasts. The entrance "porch" was an excellent large space for muddy boots and all our jackets. The location of the property meant we did a variety of lovely walks all around us, without any need to get in our cars. And the town was a short walk away for the occasions we needed it, which weren't many. Minor less positives... As noted by others, the property is on a busy road and so the crossing of it to get to the side of the road with the pavement requires patience and care. And there is some noise from the road to be heard. The welcome basket consisted of a packet of chocolate biscuits and a packet of shortbread biscuits. I'd suggest that's embarrassing for a group of 16 adults to be presented with, especially given the cost of the rental. There's lots of kitchen equipment, but it needs to be searched out. There didn't appear to be any order to where it was stored. More helpful instructions for the central heating would be useful. We weren't to know that apparently the housekeeper had turned down a thermostat such that the heating to one section of the vast property wasn't coming on. If you need a TV, which we didn't, then the only one downstairs is too small even for the snug.

Really well kitted out - didn't even need to take my own sharp knives! As you now (recently I gather) allow dogs might I suggest that the garden could be better/more safely fenced. Also I was really surprised that you could not find staff to help out on Saturday evening washing up! I cannot believe that you could not find one or two students or similar around who would be keen to earn a bit of ready cash. Even though you would not EARN anything out of it - it would enhance the experience. Washing up after 20 people - when you have done all the rest - is a tough end to an evening.

We are delighted you enjoyed your break at South Hill Farm House and found the property to be so well equipped. We have taken on board your feedback regarding the garden And are looking into better fencing. With regards to the washing up, we regret that we were unable to help you on this occasion. The property does have two dishwashers and two kitchens which we have found helps enormously following a big celebration. We hope to welcome you again soon. Property Owner

  • "We had a brilliant stay at South Hill Farmhouse, the office team were helpful in advance of our holiday and Amanda who looked after the property was responsive when we had an issue with only half the house having heating."

The facilities were great and there was plenty of room for everyone in our party. My two year old God daughter particularly liked her little room and didn't want to leave!

  • "The house was wonderful."

Roomy and spacious and beautiful. We had a fantastic time. The traffic was quite loud when sitting outside, but we had been forewarned about this. We didn't have cars, so it was great to be able to simply walk to Stow-on-the-Wold. The two living rooms were amazing, the play room was great fun, and the huge dining room divine. There were a few small problems. When we got to the house the Aga was not on. I rang Manor Cottages and within an hour someone had come to the house and started it up. He also took me around and explained the heating systems. The housekeepers had forgotten to leave black rubbish bags (pretty fundamental for so many people) and by the time they came with them I had already run out and bought some. Also, the next guests came at 11 am on Sunday, having been told we would leave at 10 am, but I had arranged with Manor Cottages we would stay most of the day. They were very nice and it worked out fine, luckily. One of the toilets broke upstairs and there was a small leak through the ceiling, but it was pretty minor and as it was the weekend and we were unable to ring Manor Cottages, we simply stopped using the toilet. With so many in the house this was not a big problem. I did text the number which had been left in the house for such things but got no reply. Despite these small things I thought it went great, and it was truly a wonderful weekend.

Southill is a very popular and sought after property which is ideal for large groups of guests with an perfect location to Stow. It was obviously very unfortunate that the Housekeeper had forgotten to leave refuse bags and this is certainly not the norm. We can only apologise that this was onverlooked on this occassion. In the property is a welcome folder which has lots of useful information about the property as well as two contact numbers which are for the guests to use at anytime during their stay. These numbers can be used 24/7 including Sunday and will always be answered. As soon as we were alerted to the fact that the AGA was not on, a member of the maintenance team went to the property to switch it on. A later check out had been agreed, however, due to unforeseen circumstances the new guests arrived earlier than expected. With such a big property, certain issues might arise which is why at the property telephone numbers for maintenance / housekeeping / emergency are displayed and encouraged to be used as we endeavour for you to have to most pleasant stay and for us solve any issues as swiftly as possible without it detracting from your stay. About the location

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD

Bourton-on-the-Water 4 miles; Stratford upon Avon 15 miles.

The highest town in the Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold, originally an Iron Age Fort, epitomises olde worlde England. This ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly Farmers' market. The vast market square boasts an ancient cross at one end and the village stocks at the other, surrounded by an elegant array of Cotswold stone townhouses, antique shops, tea rooms, traditional pubs, award-winning restaurants and its very own cricket museum. Many walks and cycle rides through the beautiful rolling countryside of the Cotswolds can be enjoyed from the centre of Stow, with the Macmillan Way, Heart of England Way, Gloucestershire and Monarch's Way all running close to the town. Bourton-on-the-Water, known as the 'Venice of the Cotswolds' as the River Windrush runs through the centre, lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is one of the most popular Cotswold villages. The Saxon market town of Moreton-in-Marsh and the quintessential English village of Broadway are all within easy reach and make a great day out. Cheltenham (20 miles away) is, architecturally, the most complete regency town in England. A spa town with an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, it is famous for its horse-racing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. At other times of year, it is host to literature, jazz, classical music, science and food and drink festivals. Oxford, the oldest university city in England and sometimes called 'The City of Dreaming Spires’ has an abundance of prestigious attractions, including the 38 colleges of the university (half of which date back before 1600), the oldest university teaching room, the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums, and Botanic Gardens. Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also within easy reach, making Stow-on-the-Wold an ideal base.
