  • "The location of the cottage on the edge of the village was fantastic."

We visited pubs, shops and a cafe in the village as well as travelled to local towns and did lots of walking in the Forest of Dean. The cottage is in a great position with a peaceful view. I was a bit surprised by the main trainline so close by, but didn’t find it too disturbing. We had everything we needed in the cottage and found the secure garden a particular benefit for our dog. The owner was friendly and helpful. To increase comfort levels even more I’d suggest a new mattress. However we had a great time overall for the week and can see why it’s such a popular cottage.

A lady pointed us to the barn on arrival and we were left to it all week. The place is well insulated and very comfortable with the little fire going. Thank you Steve for the wood. The small garden area is secure for the dogs, the tv is a good one, the facilities all clean. A great experience all round.

  • "What a find!"

Booked for my hubby's 50th in January. Not only were we blessed with dry days but sitting by the log fire and looking out onto the pond with the swans, ducks - robins and bluetits on feeders were fab! The church bells from St Peters were an added bonus & beautiful scenic walks surround. All cottage essentials thought of and Steve happily supplied baskets of logs on request for no extra charge! Feels very relaxing and private yet you have the village and farm b&b close by. We have already booked again and looking forward to returning in the spring!!

  • "Had a fantastic time at the Mallard, very clean and comfortable and the log burner is very cozy."

Steve the owner is lovely and lets you have full access to all the fields on his farm, great if you have a dog with you. Lots to do in the surrounding area, lovely 5 min walk from the property into to the village through the graveyard which is also very interesting reading all the grave stones. I will definitely be going back.

  • "We had a lovely stay at the Mallard, absolutely no complaints."

The fire was perfect too. The footpaths along the river are exceedingly muddy at the moment, so if visiting in winter, good wellies are essential, and a walking stick would be handy. It is a really interesting landscape, we just wish we had longer to explore.

  • "Lovely little property in a great location."

Close to the Forest of Dean, with all its attractions for cycling, walking, the caves and heritage railway and not far from Chepstow, Gloucester and Cheltenham. Great for 2: lovely amount of space, great layout, and useful outdoor space too overlooking a pond and abundant wildlife. Great Wi-Fi connection, decent tv, storage for 2 bikes outside and it’s far enough away from the road to be safe from prying eyes. Felt very private with no one looking over you and only occasional traffic to the owners workshop further up the track. It’s 5 mins walk from Newnham village which has an ace shop/Post Office/ cafe/pub all in one (the Black Pig), and the White Hart pub is a few minutes away by car, or a 30 min walk through the village and along the Severn bank. The owner is very friendly if you have any needs, maybe just a few more teaspoons needed ( but that maybe us..) please.

Mallard was just what we were hoping for. The property looks small from the outside but very spacious and well thought out inside. The highlight was the log fire, which we had going every day of our stay. Steve the farmer ensured we had a good supply of wood and he soon replenished it for us when we ran low. Everything you needed a for a comfortable and cosy stay, kitchen well equipped, everywhere lovely and clean. Steve gave us a wrapped box of chocolate biscuits, which was very kind and a lovey thought, much appreciated and went down well. Lots of peace and quiet, the river Severn just over, a good place to switch off. Lovely to see the sheep every day in front the property and lots of birds came to the feeders. Highly recommended and many thanks.

TV would only show in blue. Mattress springs poking through, took turns to sleep in sofa, very hard for this. Worst thing - cold water pressure very low, to the point that we could not get shower cool enough to wash safely. Shame about the negatives, if addressed we would definitely go back.

We tidied up and finished the job and put the cleaner away. To add to this the toilet was dirty and no cleaning materials to use. All in all it was quite bad. I didn't make a fuss at the time as I was already quite stressed and exhausted and was there to relax. My husband is a keen cook and to keep our costs down we are more than happy to cater for ourselves, that's why we like using cottages. Therefore I was also disappointed as to the condition of the oven. The switch was broken and it was temperamental, sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. I totally understand that this wasnt one of your finer properties but expected this to be better. On a positive note the log burner was very good and the owner was generous with the log supply. However I won't be returning to Mallards.
