  • "The tranquility broken only by the gorgeous four geese on the pond quaking was delightful."

We loved the grounds with a surprise to look at from every angle - 'Darling Buds of May' springs to mind. Will hopefully visit again at the end of the year. The property is a little gem - talk about get a way from it all and a fantastic reminder of days gone by but with all the creature comforts of today and with a very limited mobile phone signal was a blessing! Being close to Tewksbury, Cheltenham, Stow-on-Wold and Bourton-on-the Water was great. Did not get to visit Broadway, which we were assured was really worth a visit but will visit that next time. The only down was that most of the public footpaths are difficult to navigate, as you need to lift your dog over styles so if you have a larger dog this can prove to be difficult if not somewhat muddy! Thankfully, the grass verges close by were wide enough for my dog to run on with plenty of sniffs as well as being quiet - The Leigh is lovely tranquil Hamlet with no through traffic. Can't really put into words how much we loved it.

A very clean and wonderful place to stay, very peaceful and cozy, my wife and I stayed for a week with our Labrador and we all thoroughly recommend that you experience this tranquil and very interesting property. We were lucky enough to meet the owners and they are such pleasant and lovely people. The visitors book is filled with nothing but happy and great comments from others who have stayed here, many of them several times and we will be joining them in repeating our stay here in the future. A great Property and very highly recommended.

! Watching the geese & ducks from the bridge crossing was so lovely, the gifts of bread, milk & fresh eggs was a lovely touch & much appreciated. We loved it from the moment we stepped in. Plenty of space for muddy boots and dogs. The whole place is extremely cosy and was lovely and warm when we arrived. The bed was amazing, I felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. It was nice to have a safe enclosed garden for our dogs who also loved the cottage. We are so glad we found this little gem of a place. • "Another fantastic and relaxing stay at Jackdaws Roost."

This is fast becoming our weekend or long stay retreat. Hayley and Chris are a lovely couple and very knowledgeable about the area if you need to know about certain things. Winchcombe is a lovely village with Suderley Castle but they don't allow dogs in the house or gardens. The Cafe will. But the walks around there are lovely. The cottage is warm and cosy, milk bread and tea bags are provided but other people have also left other things like salt and pepper and coffee if you need it. The dog biscuits and blanket is a nice touch. We always take our own dog covers to put on the furniture just incase they jump up. The little video player works well. Only 1 gripe wish there were more teaspoons as there is only 2. We are now looking to book our 3rd trip back there as you couldn't wish for a more pleasant stay.

  • "Just left Jackdaws Roost, we have used Sykes for a long time and they have never let us down, the same applies with Jackdaws Roost at Leigh near Cheltenham."

Husband is a petrol head so that was him happy looking at all the nostalgic vehicles. There are four of the most friendly geese who greeted us every time we came home, I say home because we wish it was. Jackdaws Roost is so warm, clean and comfortable. We saw so much wildlife. There are beehives in the orchard making the finest honey. Brought back happy memories of a quieter way of life. Jackdaws Roost calms the mind and in years to come this will be a gift to those who need love in their soul, this what the owners have created PEACE! All we experienced this week was wonderful, nature thriving at its best. Everything we needed was there in Jackdaws Roost. It was lovely in the evening watching the Geese make there way from the pond to the old barn door waiting for Hayley to put them in safely until the morning (goose poo is just grass and does not smell) there was no poo near the cottage. The area is beautiful with lots of things to do and everything you need is nearby. Great little pubs with good food, dog and people friendly staff. Ghillie our Cockapoo made lots of new friends and loved his many walks. We can’t wait to return! Finally to the owners thank you for allowing us to spend our first holiday in the magical Jackdaws Roost, please don’t change a thing! Anne, John Todd & River Ghillie the dog.

  • "Greeted by 4 geese pecking at our heels but walking our fox-terrier back and forth on a short lead over the next 2 days soon encouraged them to stay away."

Enchanted by the interior when we entered but we were never comfortable on the sagging furniture. Adequate provision of utensils etc for two people. There are 2 chairs sited by the pond but one has a broken seat. The parking is adequate but difficult to turn in when both cars are there – ours and the occupant of Crow’s Cabin which is just the other side of the barn. The paths are slippery when wet and can be difficult to navigate as they are overlaid with grass and goose poo - we were assiduous in the use of poo-bags for our dog and for which there are bins in the village, but drew the line at the goose poo. The small yard (garden?) for the cottage is difficult to access via the side of the house as the access to the side is uneven, on different levels and has obstacles in the way. It is mainly old cement overlaid with a layer of encroaching grass and two raised flower beds with a mix of a few plants and weeds but several troughs and tanks of stagnant water dotted around the yard give an unpleasant odour on a warm day. Interesting experiment in ‘wilding’ to ‘encourage nature’ and I would encourage all those who espouse re-wilding to visit as it clearly does not work. The green swards shown in the details no longer exist as they have been taken over by brambles, nettles and rank grass except where the geese graze. The paddock behind the property has a path the width of a lawn-mower cut round the perimeter, presumably for walking the dog, but otherwise the paddock is inaccessible and bramble suckers trip the unwary. At least the wilderness had the benefit of almost hiding many of the rusty old vehicles dotted around the place. The overall result of the ‘wilding’ has been to give absolute silence, broken occasionally by the coo-ing of a couple of doves, the tweeting of a few sparrows, the chirping of a lone bluetit and the drone of several light aircraft which fly over. Apart from the geese and a couple of ducks there was no sign of life in the pond – no skaters, maiden-flies or other insects rippled the surface. A lone squirrel was seen on our last morning but this was the only sign of small animals – no rustlings in the undergrowth to disturb the silence, no hoot of an owl hunting at night and no interest in the undergrowth shown by our fox-terrier. Even the weathercock on the roof seemed to have given up as, surrounded by encroaching ivy, it was stuck facing the dying sun in the west. In fact we really liked the property and it is certainly full of character, but there was no comfort and the ‘large windows’ only give views of the overgrown paddock. It could be so much better. There were some issues with the plumbing, for which we left a note. Overall the owners seem to have got complacent and really need to up-date the details and to get to grips with maintenance, both inside and out before someone has an accident. They also need to give much more thought to the planting if they really want to encourage wildlife, rather than using it as an excuse to do nothing.

Thank you for your feedback. Our geese are very friendly and inquisitive but never aggressive. We are pleased that you were enchanted by the interior charm and we're sorry that you found some of the furniture a little soft. Sincere apologies for the outdoor broken seat, we will replace/repair ASAP for future guests, thank you for bringing it to our attention. There is adequate parking for 3-4 vehicles in the car park providing people park sensibly. Each changeover we sweep paths of any goose poo but unfortunately we can't monitor there movements throughout the day and do check path at night when putting geese in the stable. The back garden is the old holding yard for the cows for the Dairy (Jackdaws Roost) and over time grass has taken hold in places which we encourage. The water tanks hold rain water which gets freshened up each time it rains. I'm really sorry that your experience of what we try to achieve and have put in place was a negative experience for you. We can assure there is an abundance of nature thriving within the property grounds. Past guests have commented on the sightings of King fishers, dragonflies and moorhens etc. Owls and bats that live in the big barn opposite the property. Really sorry that you missed out seeing such a varied selection of wildlife during your stay. The back paddock is topped once a year sept/October which houses a huge variety of moths and butterflies and mice for the bird of prey. The dotting of vintage old cars and farm machinery is to add to the old time aesthetic of the place. We can assure you we have not become complacent and it takes a lot of effort to create a place where it feels left behind by modern times. We are sorry that you had a negative experience during your stay and we wish you all the best. Property Owner

! The "rustic" nature of the facility that initially attracted us hadong since passed into "neglect". Bare minimum of (non matching) cutlery, crockery, utensils, as an example - and the TV was only able to receive 1 Freeview ensemble (even in the best of weather as the antenna appears to be simple wedged between the gutter and a bush! Despite the blurb saying that mobile reception was "Rural /Patchy" even climbing as high as possible in the property we could not achieve even 1 bar (on 02 / Sky / Tesco). Very worrying state of affairs as our 11 year old was on her 1st guide camp and we could not be contacted if there were any problems. Hence every few hrs we had to drive at least 2 miles to check emails / messages.

Need a step to get onto high bed from floor so that is dangerous. Garden overgrown, and not for people with poor balance or mobility as you have to negotiate weeds, stones and wooden barriers.. Weeds 1 foot high even at front door which is not a good first impression… paddock for dog walk un/usable as grass far too high. First impressions were slightly surprising due to the olde worlde feeling of the accommodation and the surrounding buildings, ie. Old buildings & barns, which at first sight made the property feel slightly creepy. However, after the initial surprise and after a good night sleep, we were able to appreciate the uniqueness and enjoy the surrounding area. The property was relatively clean, very warm and with good provision of cooking implements and ample seating and a lovely welcome pack of bread, eggs, coffee etc. and dog biscuits, which were very much appreciated by our two dogs. The property is petfectly suitable for accessing lots of lovely walks around the area and is for exploring the surrounding towns & villages and the fully enclosed garden was perfect for our dogs who could have a run around in complete safety. There's is no internet at the property and phone signal was very hit & miss but this provided us with a complete break from the normal daily routine enabling us the peace and quiet needed for a fully relaxing break. Clean, comfy, warm, quirky and unusual. But it was the most quiet and peaceful place we have stayed in, except for the Geese who greeted you everytime you ventured out. Hayley and Chris are lovely people, who also have an Antique shop so that's where they get their items that are in the cottage. The bed was so comfy that once I managed to get in it I disappeared like quicksand under the covers. The dogs were welcomed with blankets, treats and towels. The WiFi doesn't work well but then you learn to talk to each other or read or just walk. Hayley left us some fresh eggs, bread and milk to give us a cuppa once we arrived. Check in time was 3pm but we where allowed to check in much earlier. When arriving at the barn we were greeted with doggy essentials, milk , bread , fresh eggs and apple juice which was totally unexpected. We couldn't get the heating to come on straight away so we called for help and Hayley turned up within minutes to sort it out! We thought long and hard what to write about on this review and we think that the description on the land around the barn should be in more detail. We felt very uneasy at night due to the old, abandoned vehicles and caravans around the land, and due to little lighting during the night time - maybe just that we're not used to it, but definitely made us feel a little unsettled, including the dog. The barn itself is decorated to such a high standard and was immaculately clean. Overall, very good stay... just for future, others to be aware that the land is very large and vast, so to be prepared if sleeping somewhere like this is not what you're used to.

We are very happy you enjoyed your stay with us at Jackdaw's Roost and you enjoyed your welcome pack too. We are sorry that you had difficulties in figuring out the heating instructions but I was more than happy to get it all sorted out for you. We are also sorry you felt uneasy at night. The listing states that the property is set within 14 acres. The cars and tractors are vintage and are positioned in a way to add charm and interest to the property. The 1930's caravan by the pond is being converted to a summer/bird watching space for future guests to use. There is sufficient lighting from the car park to Jackdaw's Roost but due to being in the countryside with no street lighting I can appreciate it is dark outside. • "We had the most enjoyable stay at Jacksaw's Roost, the property is just as described unique and quirky."

If like us you like something a little different then you should book a stay at this property. Conveniently situated to reach the Cotswolds/Cheltenham and the Forest of Dean we enjoyed several days out returning to sit around the pond watching the resident geese and wildlife with a glass of wine in hand. So peaceful and quiet yet amenities close by, can recommend the farm shop and Gloucester Sausage Company at Coombe Hill for fresh local produce. The welcome pack of eggs, milk, bread and fresh apple juice were much appreciated and delicious so much so we brought eggs back home with us. The owners Chris and Hayley are so helpful and friendly we wish them well with their new ventures.

  • "Jackdaws Roost is a mad place and it was a pleasure to stay there."

The cottage is a converted dairy constructed with re-cycled timbers and with plenty of character in the décor and surrounding grounds. Access is via a wooden bridge over the pond at the front, or a short walk around the end of the pond and in the gate at the side. The one-room kitchen/lounge/bedroom layout gave a nice open feel to the cottage with plenty of room for two of us with two dogs. Much of the internal structure has been left as it was with fixtures and fittings from a bygone age still in place, giving an odd but quirky appearance to the whole living area which was pleasing as every day a new hook, nail or oddity was found. The kitchen and bathroom are modern and fitted out well with room to move around carrying out daily tasks in comfort. The entrance 'boot room' can be used as a cloakroom and dog drying area as well as general storage area for those items not needed in the main housing area. Outside at the back is a secluded and very private patio area with large covered seating place and built in barbeque, as well as a small adjacent field for exercising the dogs or a short relaxing walk. All of the outside is fenced in, preventing the dogs from wandering away. I would recommend a stay here and might even go back myself one day. Thanks to Chris for constructing such a mad place, and to Hayley for the personal touches which made our arrival, and stay, all the more welcoming.

  • "Absolutely amazing property."

The grounds are utterly beautiful and very relaxing and secluded, and the geese are wonderful companions. The property itself is gorgeously converted and decorated/furnished, with an eclectic and bohemian style that says an awful a lot about the taste and skill of the owners. The home is fully equipped with all utensils and a wonderful welcome gift of milk, apple juice from a local orchard, a loaf of bread (sorry, i am gluten intolerant so couldn't eat it) and fresh eggs from the chickens that roam in the village. The owners are wonderful and extremely helpful and welcoming, and not intrusive in any way. Overall i would have to give this cottage the highest recommendation, and will definitely return if i ever have the opportunity again. Two little things which are no major problem but are worth noting; firstly there is no wi-fi which given that mobile service in the home was almost non-existent would have been useful, but not a major issue and actually was quite nice to be forcibly disconnected; and second, in the bathroom the tile should be sealed where it meets the bath as there was a bit of leakage and i would hate to see accumulated water ruin the lovely rugs there. This is an absolute gem, and i would stay again in an instant, even if the price doubled!

  • "As soon as you walk in the wow factor is fantastic, the holiday was relaxing quiet the cottage sat in its own grounds with open fields and a pond."

The geese guard the cottage in the day but were no problem. The cottage was very clean with everything and more to make our stay comfortable the bed was fantastic an old Victorian spring bed with a good mattress very comfortable. Our dog was welcomed with treats, biscuits, and a bed and a blanket. Milk, bread, eggs, and a nice bottle of apple juice greeted us on arrival the owners have gone above all expectations in our books well worth a stay to explore the surrounding area or just kick back and enjoy the peace and quiet.

  • "'The Princess and the pea' bed (although very comfortable), the eclectic array of miss matched furniture that blend perfectly to form this zany, eccentric and stunning cottage made our stay far more interesting than any hotel."

We felt instantly at home....the crackle of the wood burner at night and strategically placed lamps create an ambience almost zen like. Sprawled in the oversized chair, glass of red in hand, I literally felt the stress of life drip off the end of my fingertips. The tranquillity of the surrounding outside space was pleasantly interrupted by bees humming around the lavender plants. woodpeckers in the trees, birdsong and the delightful geese roaming and honking. The owners left a fab manual of local walks, city days out, local areas of interest and farmers markets. Absolutely top drawer....highly recommended. Would be a great place for honeymooners looking to chill out after the stress of wedding planning.

A converted milking parlour, tastefully reworked in a quirky but comfortable style. Good for dogs - the garden area front and rear is secure. The approach via the bridge over a pool is delightful. Property comes complete with a gaggle of geese! Lovely welcome treats for us and our dog. Can highly recommend.

  • "The cottage itself was charming and comfortable, a little let down by the outside space."

I realise the bed was chosen in keeping with the vintage feel of the property but I did find it very high to get into, but it was comfortable once I managed to do that.

Thank you for your review, it has been very helpful. I am sorry that you felt a little let down by the outside space. We have now updated the property description to make it clear to future guests that the 14 acres that the property is situated in is for their use and not just the rear courtyard. I have also provided a little foot stool for those who may need it. We are very happy you found it comfortable and charming. Thank you. Kind regards Hayley Property Owner
