  • "Polesworth Abbey Gatehouse croft is by far the most tastefully presented accommodation we have ever stayed in."

(It was 1 of 5 in 2023 alone). The furniture is all in country-house elegantly-mismatched style. Solid wood, no veneered chipboard and certainly no laminate anywhere ! The kitchen and all the pans, crockery, cutlery etc are of the highest quality. As are the bedrooms and bathrooms. On entering I turned on the radio - tuned to Classic-FM - says it all ? A wonderful very relaxing week away over New Year. Plenty of good canal towpath and other walks straight out from the cottage door.

  • "We absolutely loved staying at Gatehouse Croft."

The history of the building was so interesting and Father Phillip was very welcoming and helpful. There isn’t much in the local area, but everything is just a short ride away. The pubs that were local didn’t serve food, so we drove to another village a few times to eat. We would totally recommend staying at Gatehouse Croft, it was very comfortable.

  • "Gatehouse Croft is extremely well equipped compared to other accommodations where we have stayed."

It is very good for a range of walks directly from the door; we stayed for 4 nights and the cars did not move. The garden space is also a bonus with outdoor chairs and table for enjoying sunny days and evenings. The living area is dark necessitating a ceiling light even on bright days, but that is due to the nature of the building. Overall we were very pleased and would highly recommend it.

  • "Gatehouse croft is a lovely cosy place to stay."

It's full of history and is furnished in keeping with this. That said, the property is also right up to date with all the conveniences required. There's a walk right outside that takes you over the river and back to a fab chippy across the road. Father Philip is a lovely host. We appreciated the tea, coffee, milk and cake waiting for us. The location was great as we used it for a base to visit family and friends. Tamworth a short drive away is a direct train journey to London (1 hrs 10 mins)

  • "A quality property, very well appointed."

This is a historic building and very evocative, and the chosen furniture and furnishings complement it very well - the tester bed in the main bedroom is amazingly comfortable. Father Philip's friendly and helpful presence was much appreciated. Along the drive from the Gatehouse is the Abbey Church, which is also very fascinating and atmospheric.

  • "We had a wonderful stay at Gatehouse Croft."

The property was absolutely spotless, I don’t think I’ve ever stayed anywhere so clean! Father Philip made us very welcome and the accommodation had everything we needed. The building was beautiful and the history behind it fascinating. It had a lovely feel to it and was clearly very well cared for. It was a truly unique experience to stay there and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. We had a lovely walk along the canal to Pooley Park and a good curry from Yard Spice. Fabulous.

  • "Wooden stairs made it not completely dog friendly for older dogs but if they sleep downstairs it’s great."

Some noise from the pub opposite and a few cars occasionally racing up the road, but only for 30 min or so in the late evening. Otherwise this was a great place to stay with lovely surroundings. Very warm welcome, would happily stay again.

We were met by Father Philip who explained all and nothing was too much trouble for him. The cottage was well equipped and indeed exceeded out expectations in this respect. We found the location ideal for visiting the area and was easy to find. All in all a great couple of days if you need somewhere in the area.

Warm welcome and flexible hours for check-in/check-out was very much appreciated. Wifi signal is not as strong as it could be, just a heads up if you are planning to work online during the stay.

  • "We found Gatehouse Croft a delightful place to stay."

The facilities are excellent, staying in this well-modernised medieval building was a pleasure, and Polesworth is a good centre to be in. We also appreciated the little things provided, including on arrival two pints of milk in the fridge, and a cake.

  • "Everything was great at the Abbey."

Father Philip is so kind and warm. The accommodation is always very clean. Again the internet was a problem. We were without internet for half of our 21 day stay. This did cause problems with work, but we did not let it spoil our stay. It would stop me from booking again though if not corrected.

  • "We loved our stay from start to finish!"

Sykes Cottages were helpful, friendly and courteous, our greeting at Gatehouse Croft was warm and genuine. The property is simply stunning inside and out, it;s warm and cosy from the underfloor heating downstairs - so much so that we didn't light the fire even with overnight temperatures below freezing. The property is clean, tidy and well equipped, particularly in the kitchen which for someone like me who enjoys cooking is a real bonus. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Gatehouse Croft and will most definitely be back on a future visit to the UK.

  • "Beautiful medieval cottage, sensitively restored, perfectly chosen furnishings to maintain feel of the place and wonderfully well equipped."

Everything of good quality, cutlery, saucepans glasses etc Comfy bed and cosy woodburner - with logs! Warm welcome from Father Philip and lovely cake to welcome us with milk, tea bags etc. Dog friendly with blanket and bowls. Polesworth itself is not particularly attractive, but the two cottages that form part of the old abbey gatehouse are utterly delightful. There are lots of stairs if you are using the second floor bedroom, so suggest mobile adults and no tiny children. There is social club and a pub immediately opposite, which may have been a noise issue if we were using the second floor bedroom, but the main bedroom, on the first floor, is at the back of the cottage, so no problem on our stay. Sykes, as an agency are really helpful and friendly and this, too, makes for a lovely holiday!

  • "The accommodation is fantastic."

If you appreciate history, you will love Gatehouse Croft. It has been really well modernised inside, and I don't think there was anything which could be improved in terms of comfort, cleanliness or facilities. Our host, Father Philip, gave us a warm and generous welcome, and was on hand to help during the day when I couldn't turn the heating down! The only downside was outside noise. We had been prepared for noise from the pub and club opposite, but the real problem was the young men who frequented the car park area behind the property at night. We were subjected to handbrake turns in a car plus lots of shouting on our first night, then football and lots of shouting between 1am and 3am on our last night. We left early for this reason, such a shame as it is a lovely property.

  • "Gatehouse Croft is a historic building which has been imaginatively repurposed as a holiday let."

It has ALL the facilities you could possibly desire. The ground floor living space is expansive, and each of the bedrooms has its own small sitting area. We did experience some noise from the local pub and social club. However, this is specifically mentioned in the description of the accommodation, and it is worth this minor inconvenience to stay in such a lovely place.

Father Philip was most helpful and really pleasant. We were without internet for two days. We will not ask for a refund on this occasion. However it did cause a couple of problems for us. I would like to request that you please stop sending me all the emails I receive from you. I have requested this already. Every time I enter your site I get emails. If I wish to book a property I will contact you. I found the staff at Sykes very pleasant but the constant emails are extremely off putting as a client.

  • "Our "greeter" Father Phillip Wells was very pleasant and helpful."

The setting was quite outstanding with the property containing a wealth of history. One slight confusion concerned some visitors reference (in the visitors book comments), to a "welcome pack" which we did not receive although this was not expected. We thought that "welcome packs" may be connected to possible religious groups booking the cottage. Otherwise a nice stay with very friendly people.

The village of Polesworth boasts many amenities including pubs, a village shop and a Post Office, as well as offering a Heritage Centre, Poetry Trail and lovely walks and cycle paths. The area surrounding these two cottages in Polesworth offers many activities including, horseback riding and fishing, good golf courses including The Belfry, water parks and theme parks.
