The small, picturesque fishing village of Carrigaholt is located at the mouth of the Moyarta river, which flows into the River Shannon estuary, in County Clare. The village features a ruined castle and offers a shop and a handful of pubs and restaurants. There is also a beach, which is ideal for swimming, along with sea fishing opportunities and boat trips for dolphin watching. A short drive takes you to the charming seaside town of Kilkee, which overlooks a mile-long horseshoe bay, with a safe and sandy Blue Flag beach, and is reputed to be the safest bathing place in Ireland. Kilkee is home to the Kilkee Surf School, popular Waterworld with its range of indoor water attractions, an 18-hole championship golf course, a host of lively pubs and bars and a selection of restaurants serving the local speciality, seafood. The Loop Head Peninsula is a popular birdwatching and cycling area and walkers will be in awe of the fantastic, scenic cliffs in Kilkee, while the town is also the starting point for the Loop Head Drive along the rugged Atlantic coastline, which offers breathtaking coastal views.
