The twin villages of Ballyvourney and Ballymakerra and the nearby village of Coolea in County Cork are all situated in the Irish speaking area of Muscrai Gaeltacht on the N22, the primary route from Cork to Killarney. Ballyvourney offers a pub and restaurant, whilst Ballymakerra has a coffee shop, Post Office, supermarkets and a playground. The tiny village of Coolea has a swimming pool, with lessons available during the summer months. The area surrounding these villages is widely recognised as an important cultural centre for the Irish language, music and art. The National Park of Gougane Barra is only a short drive away and boasts wonderful walks along the River Lee and many exciting nature trails waiting to be explored. As well as the array of walks along the River Gougane, the popular Theatre by the Lake is held here and offers a programme of events running during the summer.
