Resting roughly halfway between the towns of Tuam and Athenry, is the village of Abbeyknockmoy. The village is home to a large farming community and has a few shops and pubs, and is also home to the well-known nearby ruins of a Cistercian Abbey, which was built by the King of Connacht and dates back to the 12th century. The Abbey contains many wonderful examples of medieval sculpture and fine paintings. The towns of Tuam and Athenry are both extremely historic towns, steeped in Irish history and holding ancient Celtic pasts. Many castles and priories remain and are well worth a visit. Both towns have a great selection of shops, pubs and restaurants, not to mention a friendly atmosphere.
