About the location
SHILLELAGH, COUNTY WICKLOW
Tullow 10 miles; Gorey 16 miles.
The village of Shillelagh in County Wicklow is a seventeenth century 'planned estate' village, with appealing architecture including attractive terraced cottages and a courthouse with clock tower. The Shillelagh stick, a well-crafted blackthorne stick originally used as a fighting weapon but now often used as an ornamental or walking stick, originated just outside the village, and visitors can visit workshops to watch local craftsmen continuing to produce this piece of Wicklow history. For walkers, the Wicklow Way runs past the village, and the nearby Tomnafinnoge Oak Wood, one of the largest remaining oak woods in Ireland, makes a lovely spot for an autumn stroll. Coolattin Golf Club is just outside the village, while slightly further afield, the Wicklow Mountains, city of Dublin, and 'Ballykissangel' village of Avoca make superb destinations for an enjoyable day trip.
