  • "Lovely quaint cottage."

Good location. All facilities as described. Wi-Fi code in book didn’t work but checked router to find correct code. Spiral stairs steep but managed might not be easy for some. Pleased to find heating on when we arrived. Thank you

  • "We arrived to find NO hot water or heating."

It got sorted but went on for 3 days . The cottage absolutely stunk of DAMP. We left a day early as i got a cold and it just getting worse. I ended up with phumonia. Thanks (NOT) to the owners of The Willets, 5 Ivy Court, Apppledore.

Thank you for your comments. Always keen to hear from our guests so that we can act upon feedback. Upon hearing late on Saturday night from you that we had an issue with one of the radiators downstairs (heating was working in all the other rooms including an electric log burner in the room with the reported issue with the radiator ) we immediately sourced an electric radiator that night until we could get an electrician to attend. I am sorry but it is very difficult to get an electrician to attend late on Saturday night. The electrician attended the following day on Sunday morning. Hot water was working the whole time of your stay. From a safety perspective we don't normally just leave the water on all the time when the property is not occupied. We have instructions for our guests on where the button is to switch it on and have never had feedback before suggesting that guests have struggled as it is very easy to do. I will take your feedback on board and review the instructions. Property Owner

  • "As you know it’s a lovely location ."

The cottage needs someone to have a look around and think what they would like . No welcome instructions , where to put rubbish, shower operation, etc ,or a feedback book for guests to write in . This is the first time we haven’t had this . Random freezer and table in front room but no where to hang coats. Shower is terrible impossible to get wet and took ages to work out which way dials were pointing . Simple dot would do! We hit a cold spell so the shower being so poor was really disappointing . The front room is impossible to heat with the tiny heater so our clothes also stayed wet . Kitchen cupboards too high to reach no storage space for food . I could go on sorry …sink splashes water everywhere and the cutlery is in a drawer with a grubby liner in it Outside is a mess and the door lock gets stuck . You have a gem here shame it’s not cared for. The bed was really lovely and we did have a great time in Appledore . .

  • "The stairs would prove very difficult for anyone with a mobility issue which needs to be be highlighted prior to booking."

Kitchen is not suitable and water runs everywhere on the kitchen sides when washing up, as this is the only place to store food has resulted in food stuff being spoiled extra shelving a must. Cooker also needs replacing. Neighbour who lives in terrace very rude looking in windows and telling me off for allowing my dogs in her court yard… the court yard being the only entrance to the property. All in all a good weeks holiday but wouldn’t return.

  • "Good value for money and great location just off Irsha Street."

Very clean and ready for use on arrival. It's a nice cosy cottage that with some thought could be even better. Kitchen needs some attention. There is no where to store your own tins and dry goods except on small work surface. Some cupboards are so high up they are impossible to reach unless you are over 6 foot or happy to climb on chairs. The electric cooker rings are going Rusty which is unpleasant. It makes more sense to put a shelf with the microwave on in the kitchen. In the lounge we would recommend getting rid of the table in the alcove - locate the freezer there. Then there is room to hang coats from the coat hooks, needed when it rains. To create a better first impression suggest you get the front area weeded outside the cottage.

  • "Although quaint (in parts), some areas of the cottage need replacing eg the kitchen."

Although the size cant be changed it needs updating. The source of the damp smell (downstairs only) needs sorting as it is very off putting. We have stayed in many old properties in Appledore and never had such an issue. The bed and the sofas were very comfortable. Although mentioned in the details the stairs make for a very tentative trip downstairs to the loo in the night!

  • "The cottage was disappointing - immediately on arrival and throughout our entire 3 nights it smelt damp despite opening windows to try to get fresh air in and dry it out."

There should be a warning for people with chest complaints. The shower is tiny and ineffective - could not get a decent quality water output, the controls were broken and potentially dangerous. The shower tray was blocked and took a long while to drain. Kitchen very tiny and poor but was as described. Photos were somewhat misleading, we struggled to work out where the photographer had been standing (!) and had clearly been photoshopped as the lounge in reality was very dark. Multiple spiders in the bedroom (possibly a nest) that hadn’t been hoovered. King sized bed very wobbly when you turned around over in bed. Had we stayed for a week we would have contacted you to complain and request to be moved. Also shower is NOT walk in! Location was good and close to amenities, but basically the cottage needs refreshing thoroughly. Would also suggest no need for a freezer in the lounge - it buzzed all night, why would anyone do this? Similarly, no need for an extra table under the stairs with a random microwave on it! Compared to other cottages we have stayed at, this was very poor and basic. It explains why this cottage was still available to book 3 weeks before we arrived…

Thank you for your feedback. It is very important to me that guests enjoy their stay at Willets cottage and therefore I would have appreciated it if you could have raised this during your stay which would have allowed me to respond and rectify any issues quickly at the time. Thank you again for your feedback - Amanda Property Owner

In a beautiful location and really welcoming for families. Especially helpful to have the high chair available! My one bit of feedback would be to reduce the number of papers in the welcome book or perhaps separate the appliance instruction books from the general instructions about the stay and what we need to do in the property, so that info is easier to find.

Cottage full of everything you need - however door lock very difficult and needs looking at as we couldn’t get in on arrival for 10 mins, and given parking situation. Shower tray does not drain away for couple hours and needs looking at. Suggestion - second table not needed and the. Freezer could move i we stairs rather than in lounge. Bed - awesome :)

  • "A very pretty period cottage and a delightful short walk to the quayside."

The bedrooms were nicely furnished and I found my bed and duvet incredibly comfy. The living room was a little austere and could have done with one or two more seaside-y pictures and perhaps a more colourful rug. The downstairs loo was the only drawback, and this was reflected in the sensible price.

The cottage was spotless on arrival and we were very comfortable on the sofas and the bed. The cottage is very quiet with very little passing traffic. The kitchen is compact! Think caravan kitchen and that’s about the size but had all we needed. Thoroughly enjoyed our week and would stay again.

  • "The cottage is in a great situation with everything within walking distance."

The Beaver pub is less than 5 mins walk away and has a lovely view over the estuary. Sadly the weather was pretty awful when we were there so the cottage was very dark and gloomy. The walkway to the property was covered in weeds and the path was a walkway to other houses. Some of the furnishing looked tired and worn. The curtains in the sitting area and the main bedroom were coming off the curtain rails. The stairs leading to the bedrooms are very steep and anyone with mobility problems would find them hard going. The bathroom with a good working shower and loo is downstairs beyond the kitchen. Hooks on the doors for towels would be a good idea. The kitchen was well equipped and the fridge was working but the light in the fridge is broken. There was no phone signal in the cottage if you are with Tesco provider but the wifi works well so internet works well.

  • "This is the second time we have stayed here so we knew what to expect."

This is a lovely, comfortable cottage, ideal for a couple with up to 1 child or a couple of dogs. A previous privacy issue in the bathroom has been addressed which is good (the other side of the bathroom window opens onto a higher level patio of adjacent houses and lacked privacy. A blind has now been fitted). The bathroom would benefit from shelves for toiletries as there is only the window sill for this. Also, the approach to the front door was completely overgrown with weeds which is not inviting but not really a problem. Generally very well equipped although I guess the property has suffered from previous guests taking things like tea spoons and drinking flutes away - what can you do? The front door and window is off a side path (not actually on Irsha Street which is great if you have nervous dogs as they are not bothered by people constantly walking by and when you leave the property, you do not immediately bump into other people with their dogs, if that is ever an issue. Lovely comfortable bed which gets the sun first thing in the morning. Downstairs bathroom is slightly inconvenient but that is the nature of the cottage and it does mean that it is a good size. Would definitely return.

  • "Our first experience of the cottage was to walk up to the front door to find 3 bin bags on the door step."

The outside area at the front of the cottage is the walk way to other properties and not ideal to use the bench which was next to the bins where we put the bags! The pictures on the website are somewhat dated with the property in need of some tlc refurb and redecoration. The fridge also does not work properly. The shower unit is also need of updating. We read that a previous visitor mentioned hooks for coats but there are no ways to dry bath or beach towels other than hanging over doors. The steepness of the stairs is understated with the top step going across the door of the second bedroom giving us concerns for our 10 year old grandson!

Really clean and with everything you could need. Perhaps a few more hooks would be useful for coats and towels etc. I didn’t find the shower completely intuitive so perhaps a simple instruction in the bathroom might be reassuring - when I did work it out it worked fine, lots of hot water! A really perfect place to stay on my own with my two young boys - loads to do in local area and we all feel we’ve had a really fun holiday.

  • "We had a fantastic week at Willets Cottage, Appledore."

The location was great, within easy walking distance to the amenities. Whilst the cottage is compact, there was plenty of space for two adults and a teenager. I would suggest that it would be good to put a small wardrobe in each of the bedrooms. Easily done with some change to furniture layout and the spare bedroom could do with a more supportive bed. Ok for a younger child, but uncomfortable for a 14-year-old. We found the cottage very clean and well stocked. Suggest a DVD player though. Good for those winter evenings. We would happily use it again and would recommend it to friends.

The only reason I didn't give "Excellent" on the Cleanliness rating was that some of the knives, forks and spoons in the kitchen drawer were dirty but this was the only fault I could find. We arrived just as the more severe restrictions on the Coronavirus were imposed. All the pubs were closed after the Friday night and this changed the whole mood of the weekend. So we decided to vacate on the Sunday rather than the Monday. This is no refection on the cottage or indeed Appledore itself which looked lovely if it had been open. I have no problem recommending Willets Cottage or Appledore for a long weekend break or longer.
