  • "Some people, urban dwellers perhaps, might find the approach to the cottage a trifle daunting."

The better part of a mile of narrow single track winding and rising and falling across a barren, uninhabited moor. In failing light and rain one tends to keep a lookout for the Baskerville hound ! The cottage itself, a beautifully converted farm building was nigh on perfect and the owners were unobtrusively welcoming. If you seek solitude, silence and scenery this is for you.

The garden was perfect for our 2 Springer Spaniels and fully enclosed. Withypool itself is a lovely little village with a dog friendly and gorgeous pub and tearoom. Be aware though that there is no phone signal and very limited wifi but is perfect for a total break from reality.

  • "We had previously enjoyed a stay on this site in Creenaghs Cottage and decided to book the Fox Lair."

Both the lettings had been significantly upgraded since our last visit. Indeed, the Fox Lair was one of the best holiday lettings we had ever rented. We would wholeheartedly recommend this property to anyone who was looking for a peaceful stay. Indeed, the break was made even more enjoyable by Geof and Bev, our two hosts, who were helpful and supportive.

A stunning location with peace and quiet top of the agenda, all you can hear is birdsong and manic sheep, with Babs joining in with the occasional bark! Alpacas in the field next to the garden. The friendly welcome from Geoff & Bev was lovely. As an aside the Withypool shop is well stocked and you can pre order

Absolutely amazing the cottage was first class, with a lovely breakfast pack supplied, the location was so relaxing and peaceful, on the Moor, loads of narrow roads that at times a bit hair-raising, Nothing bad to say at all

The only noise I could hear was the birds. Very friendly obliging hosts who helped me out when I accidentally flattened the battery on my truck. . It was a last minute booking and was all I could find, but turned out to be just what I was looking for. Would certainly go back

  • "Great holiday property if you are looking for something quiet and away from any towns."

The property is very spacious clean and has everything yiu could want views are amazing and rabbits frequented the garden. The pub was not walking distance unless you are used to long hikes or it is dry enough to go across a few fields. The owners were friendly and around as their house is just across the driveway. Only thing I would be aware of is that the roads are very thin and windy so not for drivers who may be wary on country roads so trips out a little daunting. Glad I had taken the 4 x 4 as with my small car would have struggled . On the whole though a fantastic stay and the owners had left us prosecco eggs bread butter and some biscuits which was great

  • "One of the reasons we booked the cottage was because of the numerous animals on the farm and the short walk to the pub?"

We only saw 3 Alpacas during our stay and the walk to the pub seemed to be non existant. We couldn't find any path and if we had I'm sure it would have been much more than 6 minutes walk, as stated in the description. Whilst the cottage itself was comfortable and had everything we needed, it did need cleaning. Particularly between the kitchen unit and the fridge and behind the bath. The mirrors were all smeared, I had to clean them to be able to see properly. Beware of the decking outside the patio door, it's very slippery when wet. All that said, it was a beautiful location and the village was lovely and had some beautiful walks. The locals were very welcoming and helpful. The owners of the cottage had been very thoughtful and left us a bottle of wine, fresh bread, milk and biscuits. Excellent clothes washing facilities and thankyou for the added touch of a hair dryer. I would suggest some leaflets at Foxlair, suggesting places to visit as there is no Internet connection for online searching. There are some books in the cottage with historical information on Withypool. The local post office is very helpful with tourist information. We would definately come again as its an ideal location for visiting Lynmouth, Dunster and Porlock and we enjoyed our fury friends in the garden along with the beautiful scenery. Thankyou Jo

  • "We were dissapointed that the two bedroom windows looked out into a sort of 'lean to' small utility area, which wasn't very nice."

We also found that two frying pans were dirty and a saucepan had to be washed before we were able to use it, this would be down to the previous occupants of the cottage. While generally the cottage was clean and very tidy, the skirting boards needed a good clean and when we arrived there were cobwebs in the bedroom and the bathroom, the window frame in the living room area also needed a good clean. If I was paying the greatly inflated prices for next years holiday breaks I would certainly expect a higher level of cleanliness for my money!

The cottage was spacious, very comfortable, well equipped and off the beaten track a peach for wildlife lovers like ourselves. We had several foxes, rabbits, little owls and many more interesting fauna visit the garden during the week. Ben and Geoff were super hosts. Withypool 2 miles away was an attractive old village of only approx 250 inhabitants but still supported a cafe, shop, and a pub which served very good evening meals. Would we return? MOST DEFINITEL

WITHYPOOL

Exford 3.3 miles; Minehead 14.4 miles.

The village of Withypool has a remote, upland character and is surrounded by open moorland. Most of the village lies on the north side of the river and follows the narrow roads along the valley contours. The traditional buildings are wrapped in lime washed rendered stonewalls with slate roofs, adding to the sense of character. Within Withypool, there are the local general stores/Post Office, and tearooms. There are excellent short and long walks in and around this destination, including the Two Moors Way that passes through the village. One of the most popular walks is a four mile riverside stroll to Tarr Steps, with wonderful scenery. Close by, the picturesque village of Exford is situated in the heart of the Exmoor National Park.
