  • "This was our second trip to The Old Smithy, we returned because we found the place so comfortable and an ideal base for relaxing."

My wife and I were impressed with the setting of The Old Smithy and how well it had been renovated. Plenty to see and do not too far away whatever your tastes are. I am sure we will be back for a third visit.

The property was both clean and comfortable and one of the best we have stayed in. It was well situated for visits to The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth, RHS Rosemoor and Forde Abbey as well as shopping in Honiton. The owner was very friendly and helpful.

  • "The Old Smithy is a beautiful, well-appointed cottage deep in the Devon countryside."

Surrounded by the Blackdown Hills, the cottage is in a spectacular location and befriended by both cows and alpacas in the adjacent fields. If you value peace, quiet and proximity to nature, the Old Smithy is the place to stay. The owner, Mrs Mary Hill, couldn't be more friendly or helpful and welcomed us to the cottage with lemon drizzle cake. The cottage is however remote and the approach is a little nerve-racking when arriving for the first time, especially if you follow a satnav which takes you down lanes not much wider than the width of a car! We would happily visit again and recommend the cottage for a very peaceful stay.

  • "A very pleasant stay, but we would suggest more signage on route to the cottage, as quite difficult to find if it is your first visit."

    Otherwise it was wonderful.

  • "A delightful thatched cottage hidden away behind high hedges and tall trees, The Old Smithy is a peaceful refuge from the hurly burly of gridlocked motorways and life in general."

Without doubt it is faultless; everything you need is here, and we would have returned one day had I not been poorly the day before we left. The situation had the potential to be extremely awkward for Mary, indeed for us all. This was one occasion where an isolated cottage was far from ideal.

It has a terrace outside with patio table/chairs and parasol-the perfect place for eating outside and enjoying the sounds of the countryside. The interior is very modern, comfortable and cosy. The kitchen is well equipped and much larger than the typical kitchen found in 1 bedroom cottage.I will definitely recommend a stay in this cottage to family& friends.

  • "We had a wonderful time at the Old Smithy."

The cottage was beautifully decorated with all mod cons and was set in a stunning location. If you're looking for a peaceful relaxing stay where you can wake up to the sound of bird song instead of traffic noise, this is the place to be. We loved it and would definitely visit again in future. Thank you!

The downside is that is it a bit remote, but that does mean it is wonderfully quiet and peaceful. We had a really nice break here and would recommend it.

  • "The cottage is very comfortable & has everything you might possibly need but it is remote with no shops or places to eat in walking distance."

We are oldies & found driving along the single tracks to/from the cottage to the main road very stressful, especially when a vehicle came the other way, so we left 3 nights early to visit family a couple of hours away. Our fault we should have read the Sykes reviews before we booked as someone else did mention the roads are a little hairy.

The bed was extremely comfortable and the house was warm and cosy. The owner had provided milk and home made cake on our arrival. The kitchen was a home from home with loads of equipment. Everything was excellent, we even had Wi-Fi and Sky TV. The local area is safe and very quiet with views of the, hills, farmland and sheep. The location is good for access to Honiton, the south coast and the moors. We visited, Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth, Seaton and Beer to the south. Okehampton and Tavistock to the west in Dartmoor. There are lots of walks near the Smithy in the Blackdown Hills. I would highly recommend The Old Smithy for couples who like to get away from the town for a while.
