  • "This was the second time we have stayed at The Retreat."

This time we went with our son and daughter in law. Both times we have enjoyed the property it provides everything we needed and the location is great. We will possibly stay again if available when we need it. We did find a couple of small maintenance issues which we have reported to the local office.

We are so glad you were able to revisit The Retreat and enjoyed your stay. Thank you for reporting the small issues to the office, we which were able to action. The large decking area is being repainted before the season starts to ensure guests can make the most of this space. We hope to welcome you back again! Property Owner

door handle broken. Fridge needs to be looked at unable to close, due to position too close to cutlery drawer. Dirty molded shower curtain, and sealant around bath needs to be re-sealed. With a good clean and maintenance, the cottage could be a more welcoming place to stay. comfy beds and ideal position in the town. Very disappointed, I have always used Sykes Cottages without any complaint, until now.

We are so sorry you experienced a few small problems. The washing machine has been thoroughly cleaned and a new handle fitted. There were some adjustments made to the fridge and drawer. Shower curtain has been replaced and bath re sealed. All these issues have been raised with the cleaners. We are glad you enjoyed the location and hope to welcome you back. Property Owner

  • "Cleanliness could be a little better in places, mainly in those corners which we all clean less often than we should."

We requested two travel cots for our babies but there's no space to accommodate two cots. Ours are small enough to share but if they were bigger it would have been a problem. We knew there was no parking, but the listing suggests using the Mayor's Avenue car park but this has a 4 hour limit. It didn't mention Market Square car park which is free with very few time restrictions. On the plus side it was equipped for a holiday home and the terrace out the back was amazing.

Thank you for your feedback about the cottage being well equipped. We hope you were able to enjoy the large terrace at the back of the property, we are lucky as not many cottages have this in the town! We have asked our cleaners to address your comments but feel this must have been unusual and appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Apologies there wasn't space for 2 cots, but glad they were able to share on this occasion. The car park information is very useful and we will amend the website. Property Owner

  • "Though quite small accommodation was clean and well fitted out."

Being so close to the town centre was definitely its main feature. Staff at the office were extremely polite and helpful and all helped for a stress less stay. Would definitely book with the company again.

  • "The cottage is in an ideal location."

Although it was very tidy, it does need a deep clean in our opinion, plus there is a rather unpleasant smell which is around the house most of the time and needs investigating. Park & Ride was easy and I would suggest should be recommended as an option to the limited in-town parking. A washing line would be useful.

Thank you for drawing this to our attention. The property has had a deep clean and had new beds! We have provided an Airer to take outside. Property Owner

  • "Although we were happy with the location and general cleanliness of the cottage, in the second floor bedroom there was a persistent smell of drains."

We believe the source of the smell was the stench pipe which was located in a cupboard within the bedroom. The cupboard door had gaps around it. The smell also appeared to be coming up through gaps in the floorboards. As you can imagine, this was not a pleasant environment in which to sleep.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. any problems have been dealt with and the property has had a deep clean. Property Owner

  • "Dartmouth is a beautiful place for a family holiday, the The Retreat was ok but really desperately needs some TLC, the master bedroom has original floor boards and some are in need of urgent repair, one floor board in particular next to the bed dipped exposing a huge nail and if not careful could cut into your foot!"

The chest of draws are in need of repair! The overall cleanliness was very much a quick wipe over! The 2nd bedroom has two single beds and are very rickety, and in desperate need of replacing! Again very much needs a deep clean only had a very quick wipe over! Thick dust under the bed that is in eye-line view, floors really needed a good clean! Main downstairs with kitchen area is ok, but the kitchen really needs looking at, every time you opened the cutlery draw this opened the fridge and vice versa, due to the miss alignment and needs looking at! If you was a family stay as a self catering holiday this place would be very hard to accommodate as there is no spare cupboards to store any food, sides and dining table would have to be used which is not a convenient option, the toaster is not child proof as one side pops up the other you have to tip the toaster upside down to get anything out, not ideal for kids wanting to make their own breakfast! The whole downstairs again needs a very good clean! The garden offers a lovely spacious area for relaxing in the evening, but unfortunately not ideal for a young family as the condition of the decking boards are very weathered and again some TLC! Despite this we love Dartmouth, it’s just a shame, with some TLC and general maintenance and a very good clean this would be an ideal place!

Since this review the property has had a thorough deep clean. Both bedrooms have had new beds and bedroom furniture. (as seen in the new pictures) The floorboards have been checked, more rugs provided. The fridge/cutlery drawer has been mended. New toaster purchased. The decking has had some boards replaced and new lounge chairs have been provided. Property Owner

  • "Really enjoyed staying here as it was clean, well maintained and not too far from the waterfront."

Parking was a known issue but I managed to get into the fee spaces within the market place and leave my car there so it wasn’t a problem. Equipped with everything I needed with an added benefit of a washing machine. I would have liked an iron but that’s a minor point really. Overall I’d stay again here as it was really comfortable and clean which is what you really want when you are away.

  • "Overall the inside of the property was clean & tidy, but there are a few things needed to make it better."

The toaster wasn't working properly (unless you stood & held the lever down). The shower curtain needs to be replaced, smelt very unpleasant. The decking area outside could be so much better. The chairs & tables obviously hadn't been cleaned for some time. We had to clean these before we could use them. The decking itself really needs some TLC. It looks tired & scruffy. A day's work would make this a great outside space. On the positive side, the house is in a great location, very convenient for town. All in all we had a great week in Dartmouth.

  • "A wonderful short break away in Dartmouth."

Our first time to this area and it didn’t disappoint. The property was lovely - warm, cosy and had everything you could ask for, including a wonderful outside area. The kitchen was really well equipped. Lots of lovely additions in the property like throws for the beds and cosy blankets in the lounge to snuggle under. The quayside and shops were only a 4 minute walk from the property. Many bars and restaurants offering outside space and COVID safe takeaway service. Fantastic shower in the bathroom. Heated towel- rail too which is always a plus. The property was cleaned to a high standard. It was a lovely area to be based in as there were many local walks available and stunning coastline and pretty villages nearby. We would definitely stay in this property again.

  • "I would call this property average."

It’s acceptable enough and a great location as a base for being out & about in this lovely part of the world. It needs a little TLC, more modernisation, and the decor is a bit tired. But it has all the amenities you actually need. Spacious decking is very sunny & a bonus in the summer. Patio furniture looked new which was good. My main grumble is lack of blackout blind on the velux window in the double bedroom. Broad daylight at 5am is harsh. But dark cream bed linen (to match the walls?) really isn’t ideal. Surely most people (including me) expect white. As with other comments, TV didn’t seem to work (not a problem for us) & washing machine didn’t work initially, but promptly fixed to be fair.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We can confirm that during the lockdown the owners have carried out the below work as well as some other aspects, there has been internal decoration carried out, the blind has been replaced, there are new outdoor lounge chairs, new smart tv and new router with super-fast broadband. We hope to welcome you back to Dartmouth in the future. The Team at Coast & Country Cottages Property Owner

The rear patio is a bit tired with decking and general woodwork requiring cleaning and repair and the weeds and brambles were overgrown. Patio furniture a bit rickety and old. Having criticised the patio, it is bathed in sunshine all day and a nice area to sit even with my previous comments.

  • "If there was an 'average' rating for The Retreat I would have to use it rather than good."

Although it slept 5 (including one child) there was not enough seating at the kitchen table for 5 people and one of us had to sit on the sofa to eat. If you can't seat 5, you shouldn't advertise the house for 5. Even children need to sit at a table to eat. We had trouble getting the TV to work despite following the instructions to the letter and couldn't get the TV in the main bedroom to work at all. I couldn't find instructions for the washing machine which wasn't very intuitive.
