Loved the beautiful cosy quiet cottage, looks like the photos. With the grip strips on the stairs there's no issues. I'm heavily pregnant. I have no faults to the place or the area. We really enjoyed our stay. Everything there you need, plenty of information in the welcome packs. Walk away from everything. I would definitely go again.

It was exactly as described, fully equipped with everything we needed. Lovely 'Olde Worlde' decoration and very clean and well cared for . Can't think of anything we needed that want there and the beds were too comfortable! Information left by the owner was great, particularly for dog owners. Car park very close. Only negatives which are very small and more to do with us rather than the property is it is very tucked away so when you are in the cottage you are very closed in with no view. Also if you take a dog please note the shared courtyard and gate which accesses the road. This is used by two holiday cottages and a flat above the restaurant. Not everyone is too careful about closing gates. Main gate from courtyard has a spring closer so your pooch should be safe but just be careful. All in all an excellent stay and would highly recommend.

The stairs in cottage not very safe but I have been told that has been seen tithings could do with a little bit of tlc We didn’t last long there because my wife slipped on the stairs but it had all mod cons Shower in a weird position to far to wall

Dear James Of course I was extremely sorry to hear about your wife's fall but I have to take issue with your comment that the stairs are not safe. It is a well constructed wooden staircase, fairly steep as is usual in a traditional cottage. The wood is painted with purpose made floor paint and is not polished during cleaning as this would make the surface slippery. As an additional precaution I have now installed high friction strips on the edge of each tread to further reduce the possibility of accidental tripping or slipping. The cottage is regularly maintained and improved with such items as a new high efficiency gas central heating/hot water system, new washer/dryer, new dishwasher, refurbished bathroom, high quality flame effect "log burner" heater in the lounge, modern internet TV and high speed broadband to give but a few examples. At this stage in the season it will be showing some signs of wear and tear as guests move in and out inevitably leaving traces such as chipped paintwork in their wake. Rest assured that during the "off season", which is very short at this busy property, lots of touching up and maintenance jobs are undertaken. I want my guests to be delighted by their experience in Torquay and I'm really sorry it didn't work out well for you. I hope that you appreciate that I have taken your comments seriously and acted positively on them. Property Owner

  • "A very enjoyable stay coupled with a fantastic week of hot weather."

The cottage is very much as described and has all you would need for a comfortable holiday. It should be noted though that the parking wardens are very strict, there is a car park round the corner in Meadfoot Road , and it will cost you £50 for a 8 day permit ( this can then be used at any non pay on exit car parks in Torbay) ...don't hang around unloading too long ! Also , the stairs up to the cottage would be challenging for the less than mobile, and that would be the same for the stairs inside leading up to the toilet and bedrooms inside the cottage . There is a dehumidifier in the kitchen, I was amazed at how much water this actually takes out of the air, and I emptied it every day to keep it functioning , there are instructions on the wall ( easy to do ) I've seen other reviews saying there was a smell from the neighbouring Orange Tree restaurant ....well we never smelt a thing and never heard anything either, so that was never an issue. It's a lovely cottage , well situated, and there's a short cut down steps to the harbour area. Finally , thank you to the owner for equipping the place so well, the bed is super comfy, and thank you for the fudge and bubbles that was a really nice touch, We would 100% stay here again . Best regards...Karen

Dear Karen. Thank you for your appreciative comments and also for pointing out that our stairs could be an issue for folk with reduced mobility. You’d be warmly welcomed back. Peter Property Owner

  • "A few points about the cottage and it's cleanliness: The cooker wasn't clean on our arrival; this had splats of grease on the hob area and the splash back was quite caked with grease as though this has rarely been cleaned, along with the wooden parts on the wall at the side of the cooker also very greasy."

I actually wiped the cooker down before we left leaving it to a better standard than it was when we arrived. The roof of the microwave had splats of food on it, again I wiped this out before leaving, where it was left to a better standard than when we arrived. The whole property appears generally dusty like it needs a thorough deep clean. The cushion covers in the lounge had loads of black hairs on them, this made me feel grubby. I had to take them all outside to clean all the 'dog type hairs' off them. Further to this the bedspread on the main bed also had black hairs on this, although the other bedding was clean this was not. I questioned if this actually gets washed after each guest which I assume not when I saw it. Along with this were the 2 matching pillows to the bedspread that again had black hairs on it and clearly hadn't been freshly washed. The throw on the single bed also looked grubby, it had a brown ish mark on this, and generally looked like it needed washing, again dog type hairs were observed on this. I'm sure the housekeeper noticed I put all of the above items in the 'wash pile' upon leaving to 'hint' they needed washing as it would appear they definitely hadn't been prior to us attending. If you'd like to address these points with the housekeeper as it would seem he/she appears quite particular on how the property is left although the points raised appear very minor. When a property is 'lived in' for a week it is bound to need some cleaning but it seems the very basic work is undertaken by your housekeeping services. Not happy

This guest was politely asked to explain the reason for signs of disrespectful behaviour towards the property and has chosen to take offence and submit a poor review. The review is the complete opposite of the comments left in the visitors book and I include these below verbatim. Midweek review: 1st impression was wow I love it. I love the location, just nicely away from the crowds but close enough too. The quaint little cottage is like home from home. the only thing I would change is the sofa. Them pieces of wood stuck in your back when you lay down aint very comfy. Everything else is spot on. So, it's the end of our lovely little holiday by the sea, its been tremendous, spectacular, superb!! Babbacombe beach is dog friendly, toilets + cafe there and there's a£2 pay car park right next to the beach!! Just a few things I would recommend for the cottage. Blackout curtains, new sofa, that's it. I personally loved the lovely smells of food coming from the Orange Tree, hmmm, lovely!! thank you Peter your place is awesome. • "We had a lovely stay at Blue Harbour cottage, lots of walking and exploring."

The bed was amazing, we slept soundly. Enjoyed the nearby restaurants and loved the ambience of ‘the hole in the wall’. Not a complaint at all, just a personal comment that the tv was too small for my husband to see as he has glaucoma and cataracts, we had brought some dvds, I know it’s old school!, but we hate reality tv and soaps!! But even if we could have played them he couldn’t see the small tv screen. No real problem, we weren’t on holiday to watch tv after all. Had a lovely break and the cottage is fabulous. Thank you.

Hi Karen. So glad that you enjoyed your stay in Torquay. I understand your husband’s difficulties, the TV is the biggest practical for the room and is a smart internet connected model that has hundreds of channels and access to things like Netflix and the catch-up channels so there’s plenty of choice. Peter the owner was very helpful. If you have any mobility issues, this isn't the cottage for you and be aware that parking is chargeable.

Dear Sarah. Thanks for your feedback, glad you had a good time. You are right to point out that old and quirky normally equates to steeper steps and stairs. This is mentioned in the Sykes description but no harm in making sure that folk with mobility issues are made aware. Parking in the town centre is an issue but the weekly permit does allow parking in all of the Torbay car parks so it’s quite good value. Best regards. Peter Property Owner

The cottage has all amenities and is very cosy. The owner is on hand if you need help. It is really close to the Harbour and main bus stops. We were travelling by local transport which is easy and cheap if you buy the daily ticket. There are lots of restaurants, a co-op and tesco express in the town for food supplies. Our dog was welcomed in the local pubs and restaurants. • "The cottage is in an excellent location for the harbour (within very close walking distance), has excellent facilities in the cottage itself, and the two bedrooms are beautiful and very comfortable."

The bathroom is also very well fitted, with a great bath and shower. There are cafes, restaurants and a Co-op within a short walk. What you miss out on view (as traditional cottages, they are closely packed front to back), you certainly make up for in convenience. If you do need to drive, then you don't need to go far for a whole host of beaches and other attractions such as Kents Cavern and the Model Village. Ilsham in particular is a lovely village very close by that has some useful shops, nice playground and a wonderful deli/cafe! In the cottage, there are a couple of places in kitchen and bathroom that will benefit from the 'off-season' refresh in decor, and being such an old cottage we recommend you keep the humidifier running in the kitchen as the owner helpfully suggests - it does the job wonderfully!

Dear Juliet. Thanks for your positive feedback. You've certainly spotted all the advantages of the location and I am trying to make the accommodation as comfortable as possible within the constraints of a quirky old cottage. There are indeed some bumps and scrapes to be attended too but nothing that interferes with your holiday. The cottage is pretty much booked up all year so finding a slot in the winter season isn't always that easy! Do come again, you'd be most welcome. Property Owner

  • "I like to think my reviews are balanced and offer constructive criticism so here goes."

Let’s start with the positives. The location is absolutely spot on, five minutes walk to the harbour, shops, pubs and cafes everything is in easy reach. The shower and bath are wonderful and so is the bed in the main bedroom. I can’t comment on the second bed as we didn’t use it. The cottage has everything and possibly more than you will need. Now the not so good. You will need to consider the cost of parking when you are budgeting as no street parking. This cost is an extra £45 for eight days but that does include most of the car parks up and down the coast. The cottage itself is nothing like the photos (hence the title of my review). It is in desperate need of a compete overall. The wooden painted floors must have looked good at one point but now just look a little grimy. The stairs are the same so don’t walk about in socks on them as my wife slipped twice. If you have mobility issues the stairs are not good. The settee in the lounge is old and uncomfortable and looks dirty and so do the cushions (see photos) in fact the whole cottage feels a little dirty not unclean just a little attention to detail needed. The outside court yard could do with a tidy up, the old rusty garden furniture has seen better days and is uncomfortable. The courtyard is also the access for next door cottage so you have people walking past you at random intervals-not for me sorry I like my privacy and this meant we spent less time out there. The cottage also sits behind a restaurant and you can smell the food cooking which is not really the most relaxing thing. The photo of the cottage led me to believe that it was in a prominent seafront position which it is not but I should have researched this for more. The entrance hall, the bathroom floor and drainer have been done in this strange pebbles and grout and again it might have looked good once but now just looks dirty. The cottage is old so there is a bit of a damp smell which is understandable however the diffusers and candles all over the house are empty and just collecting dust so why not either fill them up or get rid. That brings me to other things that need removing. In the cupboards there is food from previous guests (I’m presuming). We found half a jar of lemon curd, sachets of dips from takeaway’s, opened mayonnaise and jars of spices opened and the list goes on. Now I am not going to eat this as for one I don’t know when it was opened let alone by who so just bin it. There is plenty of cleaning products which is great but I know that you should not be writing on sprays that it’s ‘anti bacterial spray’ this is surely against COSHH regulations. Let’s finish on a positive. The weather was fantastic and at home we usually have a fan but the cottage didn’t have any. We contacted Peter the owner who promptly provided us with two desk fans which were very welcome. Would we go again no but don’t let me stop you. Two stars are for location, bed and shower.

Dear Nicola Thanks for your constructive feedback. It's always good to have "strange eyes" look at a property and I will take note and action on several of your points such as the stuff left in the food cupboards and the diffusers. The cottage is indeed an old property that is part of its charm. The air in Torquay is damp and that's why I have a dehumidifier running in the kitchen, I think that you had turned it off for some reason. Properties in such a central location here don't have parking and you're right to say that this is an additional cost but as you can use all the carparks in the whole bay area you would probably pay just as much for parking away from the cottage on day trips. The courtyard shared access is mentioned in the cottage description and whilst not ideal is common in the very centre of the town and at least you are sharing with other holiday guests staying in the next door cottage. The house was decorated with the beams and pebble flooring by the previous owner who is a talented artist. Most people find the pebbles quirky and attractive but being grey pebbles in grey grout I can see that this is not a universal opinion. During the season the paintwork gets knocked about a bit by guests, some less careful than others, and I have to wait until I get a clear period in the winter to get the paint pot out. The cottage is pretty much booked up all year so I have to pick my time to do maintenance work. There is an ongoing programme of upgrading and I have replaced the boiler/heating system, living room stove and refitted the bathroom in the last couple of years. This will continue as needs suggest and funds allow. I assure you and all my guests that the cottage is thoroughly cleaned after each guest by a professional housekeeper who has high standards. Nothing is grimy at the start of a holiday. I'll look into refreshing the outside photo and I have remodelled the patio area and repainted the house front. I don't think it looks all that different and certainly isn't meant to deceive. Finally, I always encourage guests to contact me immediately they have an issue as I only live a few minutes from the cottage and am more thank happy to come and see what can be done to resolve the matter such as I did with your request for fans. Great space for 3 guests but the stairs may prove difficult for those with reduced mobility. The kitchen is fully stocked with white goods and all crockery and cutlery is in good condition and plentiful. Heating system is great, ensuring a cozy temperature even in the harshest winter. Torquay Harbour is easily within a 5 minute walk with dozens of pubs, restaurants and shops to suit all tastes. Excellent communications from the owner made for a very easy process throughout. Be aware that a 7 day stay will require an 8 day parking permit which costs £42. However this allows access to many other Torbay Council run car parks in the area, so it isn’t too bad value. The landlord went above and beyond: leaving milk in the fridge (along with a bottle of bubbly), texting to let us know that the property was ready; letting us know of any issues left behind by the previous holidaymakers and telling us not to rush to leave as no one else was booked in that day. Thank you so much, we will be booking again in the future.

  • "We had a great time, the cottage is walking distance to everything."

It had everything we needed except the towels. One small thin towel per person wasn't enough. We ended up buying a couple towels. It was very clean inside. Outside could do with a bit of a tidy. The cottage is not disable friendly. If you have bad knees or other difficulties getting around I wouldn't recommend this cottage, it has steep stairs leading to the cottage and inside the cottage. The wood fire was fantastic and the bed was warm and cozy. You can't park in front on the street. The public car park is around the corner not far from the cottage. You have to go on line to purchase a parking permit. We paid £35 for 6 days which wasn't a big deal, but would think about it in the future. The cottage has everything you need for your stay. It doesn't catch the sun during the day so if you enjoy a coffee in the morning sun this isn't for you. Thank you Blue Harbour Cottage for your hospitality. The champagne and clotted cream fudge was a nice touch.

It was everything we needed for a base to explore Torquay and surrounding areas. The owner of the cottage was lovely. He had already gifted us a bottle of wine ,then on finding out it was my birthday and wedding anniversary got us another bottle and some tasty fudge. Great holiday . Look forward to returning.

The cottage was very well maintained and comfortable I would not hesitate in recommending this quaint fishermans cottage to others. The location was also good for access to the harbour and amenities.

  • "Disappointing."

..Had no garden.shared entrance.no privacy. The sofa was as uncomfortable as the Victorian sleeping bench for the poor.We were forever banging ourselves on the hidden planks of wood in it.scruffy entrance ,dead leaves / shrubs.mouldy sitting left in front. We left after 4 days as the shared entrance was forever being left open.Had we stayed would of lost our dog on the road outside. The property is above the kitchens of the restaurant so all evenings had cooking smells/dishes clanking till late.Woken most mornings by seagulls on opposite roof at 4.30 as one neigboour regular feeds them.Could not relax the whole time. However the cottage is decorated lovely.

  • "Lovely character filled cottage."

Lots of attention to detail inside. The best double bed we've ever slept on in any holiday home! It is nicely off the main busy front too. It would have been a higher score but the only things that weren't perfect was the walkthrough garden (although the neighbour was very pleasant); and loading and unloading can be problematic as the traffic warden is very keen. Thank you for a lovely break.

  • "I was a really nice cottage in a great location but the garden was not secure as another family had right of way through it and this meant I could not leave my dog alone there while I did things in the house."

The house also had pop corn in the some of the rooms which the dog loved but we did not appreciate and although the 35 pounds for parking was clearly mentioned on the description we had searched for cottages with parking and had not realized the extra cost until after we had booked.. I would recommend this cottage for couples without young children or dogs.

  • "This cottage might not be suitable for people with mobility issues as the access is via an uneven path and steps which is unlit at night."

The cottage is comfortable and nicely furnished though. It is close to the harbour and shops with plenty of places to eat nearby. Because of the location of the cottage behind a restaurant there's no view to speak of if you like that kind of thing.

although the sofa looked very nice at first glance, it was so low even the table was higher, if you are have dexterity problems this is not good, i sat most of the time on a dinning room chair. as the sofa was very hard to get up from. no clothes airier. DVD player would have been nice, (we had to go out and buy one) outside the garden area needed attention.

The cottage had nice modern features and beds were clean and comfortable but the floors were not clean when we arrived (dog hair under sofa and under rug and rug not hoovered properly). It was a good central location however parking was difficult (although did manage to find on road free parking for entire stay 10 minutes walk away). The sofa in the living room was not comfortable and had a hard, hidden, wooden post in the middle of the seats which all of us hurt ourselves on at some point during the holiday. Overall small cottage in good, central location but improvements to seating and floor cleaning would have been desirable.
