Langdale barn is beautifully furnished and in a gorgeous village with a lovely enclosed garden, ideal for our dog. The footpath leading from the garden to the beautiful lakeside walk was a huge bonus. We loved the comfy sofas, the supremely comfortable bed, the fantastic shower and everything else in between. All the little extras provided by the wonderful hosts, Mike and Julie, were very much appreciated. From the delicious cream tea on arrival, to the bath robes and toiletries. We had a wonderful walking holiday, so much beautiful countryside to explore in the area. We ate at the fantastic New Inn, a few minutes walk, 6 nights out of the 7. A massive plus to have this gorgeous pub on the doorstep! Mike very kindly refilled the number of bird feeders in the garden part way through the week, the variety of garden birds we saw was amazing. We could have sat for hours just watching them! Also loved the wildlife cameras - another lovely touch. We loved it so much we booked for next year before leaving and can’t wait to go back.

We tried several local restaurants, from the excellent New Inn (twice) a short walk away in the village to the Countryman for a Sunday roast and the Bearslake Inn for character and great food. A small problem with the shower was dealt with immediately, contact numbers were provided so any issues could be addressed quickly. Relaxing in the cottage or walking down to the lake was lovely, unfortuantely the poor weather meant it was too cold or wet for breakfast on the patio, but the view of the garden and hills through the full height windows made up for it. SAMPFORD COURTENAY

Okehampton 2.5 miles.

Midway between Sampford Courtenay, a sleepy but picturesque Devon village, and Okehampton, a thriving community known as ‘the gateway to the moor’. The whole area is a country lover’s dream. The high tors of northern Dartmoor dominate the scenery and provide a splendid backdrop to Okehampton nestling in a valley where tumbling moorland rivers join before heading to the sea. For miles around, the area is famous for its country pubs that between them provide welcome rest after a day exploring the paths, cycle ways and stunning countryside. On a clear day the view from the top of High Willhays (the highest point south of the Pennines) will take your breath away. Country pursuits and crafts are a way of life and a trip to the Dartmoor Visitor Centre and country museum in Okehampton are musts. Look also at the pretty moorland villages of Chagford, Belstone and Sticklepath to savour a way of life that’s becoming increasingly rare.
