The area is lovely with a shop not far away which we needed to visit for bread and milk etc. the ONLY negative is a neighbouring dog that barks and howls, we have a dog so it kept my dog on alert which in turned woke us up in the night to the barking. This is not a reflection on the owner, property or area. It’s beautiful and will 100% be returning.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your recent stay at Hillside Cottage. I am so sorry that the neighbours dog disturbed you. Property Owner

We found it very dog friendly, stair gate supplied and covers on the seating furniture made it a really relaxing time for us and our two border collies. Lots of walks near by. Was a shame we didn't get to sample the food at the local pub( no chef ) but dogs welcomed there with water etc but alot of nice pubs near by. Would defiantly like to return for another holiday at this cottage.

It was really cute and the garden was lovely. There was good information to be able to plan the week there, which was helpful. The sofa was comfortable but the 2 chairs were less so. For a couple, this wouldn't be a problem but for any more people, it wasn't as relaxing on an evening. Location was brilliant and perfectly placed for exploring the Quantocks and Somerset.

  • "We had a problem with a neighbour's dog, howling and barking whenever they went out."

Pulling out of the driveway was very risky, some of the traffic very fast,a traffic mirror may help. There was evidence of mice or rat droppings in the kitchen, tissue rolls under the sink chewed up.Beds uncomfortable, need mattress toppers at the very least.

We apologise for the problems you experienced whilst staying at the cottage. We will do our best to ensure the family's dog from nextdoor does not continue to be an issue, I'm sorry this impacted on your holiday. The speed limit on the lane is 30 mph, it is difficult if that is not being observed and awkward for us to control. Mice in the property is truly regrettable. In our 10 years of running the holiday cottage we have not had mice in the living areas. Steps have been taken to eradicate them. Our single beds do not have mattres toppers, the king size bed does have an integral memory foam topper. We will have a look at how they can be improved. All feedback we receive is valuable, thank you for taking the time to respond. Property Owner

It had everything you could possibly need for a holiday, and over the week we found more little extras that we hadn't seen initially. Maps, books, dvds, hot water bottles for those extra cold nights. The garden is pretty and enclosed so suitable for our dog, and off road parking was much appreciated. So close to the Quantocks and a stone's throw from Hawkridge reservoir, what's not to love about Hillside cottage.

Thank you for giving feedback on your stay, alll the comments and suggestions we receive are valued and shape the way we update Hillside Cottage, especially when improvements are recommended. The shower has a water saving showerhead that restricts the flow, we endeavour to balance being eco friendly with being practical and hope the balance is about right. The lounge chairs are from IKEA and were bought recently I apologise that they were not quite right. Deckchairs and 2 reclining chairs are also available in the garden shed in addition to the bistro sets of table and chairs, I'm sorry this was not clear during your stay. Thank you for providing further detail and we will do all that is possible to improvefto improve our facilities. Many Thanks Property Owner

The historic cottage is charming, cosy and exceptionally well equipped. We especially enjoyed the woodburning stove in its huge, old fireplace on the long, dark evenings as well as the lovely view across the countryside from the main bedroom. The owners/ managers provide extensive, helpful local information, maps and guidebooks. Spaxton is close to the Quantock Hills making it an ideal holiday location for walking; the views across Somerset and to South Wales from the hills can take your breath away. Spaxton has an excellent community-run shop and a traditional pub which offers home-made pies. There are many excellent farm cafes and characterful pubs in the area. We enjoyed seeing starling flocks at the well-presented Steart Nature Reserve just a few miles away and exploring the geology of the nearby beach at Kilve. A particular thank you to Gavin the manager for a helpful pre-visit chat regarding avoiding traffic congestion around Bristol on our arrival day. If you're not familiar with rural Somerset do be prepared for narrow, windy lanes.

Quiet location with narrow roads when driving to places. Walks immediately from the cottage which was ideal for the dog and for days when we chose not to venture out. Community shop good for essentials, however supermarkets within a 10 minute drive. Would certainly consider a re-visit in the future, maybe in the summer as it was cold in the cottage, however it was November. The woodburner was very welcome in the evenings.

The property

A semi-detached, character cottage in the pretty Somerset village of Spaxton, to the west of Bridgwater.

This attractive Spaxton cottage dates back to the early 1800s and was originally part of a farmhouse, which was converted into four cottages.

It has two bedrooms and provides cosy accommodation within a peaceful village setting, with far-reaching views of the surrounding countryside.

The sitting room of this Somerset cottage has exposed beams over the doors and an inglenook fireplace with a woodburner, ideal for a cosy evening after some walking in the Quantock Hills.

The fitted kitchen of this Spaxton cottage has a dining area and a door leading to a pantile roofed patio and sunny enclosed garden, which is a peaceful spot to relax.

There are plenty of country walks from this Somerset cottage and Spaxton has some interesting restored almshouses, a pretty historic church, a welcoming traditional Somerset pub and a well-stocked community shop selling quality local produce, plus there is no street lighting in the village, which means on clear nights you can see outstanding views of the night sky.

With the WWT Steart Marshes right on the doorstep and four RSPB reserves within easy driving distance; Greylake, Swell Wood, Ham Wall and West Sedgemoor, this wonderful cottage is perfect for wildlife lovers.

Nearby there is the whole of the Quantock Hills to explore either on foot, on horseback or on bike and this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers some excellent landscapes and fine views.

Exmoor and the North Somerset coast are just half an hour's drive from this Spaxton cottage where there are beach resorts, fishing villages, stunning moorland and National Trust coastal walks.

However, the Jurassic fossil beach of Kilve is 8 miles away, and WWT Steart is 7 miles, both reached in around 20 minutes.

This peaceful retreat provides a base for a memorable family holiday.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £50.
