Sally and Monty are great hosts (not forgetting Winston the Lab!). If you are looking for a quiet place to chill out and as a base to walk from it's just for you. Warm, cosy and comfortable. Although the weather was extremely wet while we were there the barn was lovely place to return to. The dogs had a good time and settled in straight away. The enclosed garden lovely for dogs. Top Tip : When you travel there. As you get to Tavistock turn off the sat nav and follow the directions Sally has given and you will have no problems finding it.

The cottage was clean and contained all facilities and equipment that one would require. We were able to walk with the dogs from the cottage onto the moors with ease in either direction. The enclosed garden was safe to let the dogs out without worrying that they would run off. The hosts were pleasant but not intrusive and left all the facilities to make ample cups hot beverage on our arrival and enjoy the home made cakes they supplied. Sadly we picked the wettest week of the year to holiday and our enjoyment of the great outdoors was severely limited. Despite this there was a coat dryer machine which was ideal. Thank you.

  • "Absolutely beautiful."

We had such a fabulous week. The cottage (barn conversion) had everything we needed. It is very comfortable and clean and has a lovely private garden. The owners, Sally and Monty, are lovely and kind and even posted my coat back to me that I left behind. Although they live in the farmhouse next door, we felt our stay was secluded and private. We can highly recommend it. I was worried my husband (a city boy at heart) would find being so isolated difficult, but he loved it too. And there are plenty of lovely pubs and small villages within a few miles to explore (a short journey by car). We can highly recommend the Royal Oak pub at Meavy for great food. For a pint, the nearest pub at Walkhampton has a lovely friendly vibe ( we didn't try the food, but apparently, Steak and Ale Pies there are a favourite with the locals). Don't hesitate to book this fabulous find if you are looking for peace and quiet and great walks on Dartmoor.

Enjoyed every minute of it. Lots of walks nearby for our dogs. The furnishings were top quality. On days we did not go out there was a big garden for the dogs to roam without fear of getting out. Believe me our little poppy would have found a way out if she could. Plenty of dvd’s to watch. Some films and box sets we hadn’t watched for years and some we wouldn’t normally watch. The barn was warm throughout and all towels and bed linen were top quality too. The owners were very helpful. The kettle stopped working mid week and they provided another straight away. They helped us unpack the car on arrival and milk tea coffee sugar all there when we entered and a box of lovely cream cakes. Also no need to take bubble Bath shower gel hand soap fairy liquid and washing machine liquid and conditioner all there to use. We will definitely be rebooking for 2024.

It was just what we needed, time to relax, sit back and hit the STOP button on our busy lives. We absolutely enjoyed our break at Buster barn, its own surrounding were stunning set in beautiful Dartmoor. Just sitting on the sofa looking out the door onto the moor was mesmerising and the little seat in the garden was so peaceful. Opening the patio door for our collie to go out and lie on the little bridge watching the birds, the pond and the water in it !! Monty and Sally were perfect hosts, on hand with advice and guidance but you also wouldnt actually know they were there either, on hand but not intrusive. Buster barn had everything you could think of, wish for or not need! but we are in no doubt that every wish, whim and request was and would have been catered for - if you had forgotten to pack it I am in no doubt it would have been there somewhere!! The property was clean, well decorated and with mod. cons. I loved that there was no mobile signal at the property. Wifi was available if you needed it for emergency contact. At night it got so dark - stunning skies when you got to see the moon and stars (well it was January!) If you could visit heaven on earth, I think Buster Barn would be that place!!

The weather was awful but the barn was very comfy and had a great film collection which made the rain a little less frustrating! Roads leading to Buster Barn are not for the faint hearted as they are extremely narrow with hardly any passing points but that was the only downside and the beautiful surroundings upon arrival made it worthwhile.

  • "Buster Barn is a beautifully situated property on the edge of Dartmoor, the only drawback being (not the owners fault) is that the last 1/2 mile of lane leading to the barn is a very potholed, leaving us with a ruined tyre."

Nether-the-less the barn was superb with everything included for a wonderful holiday, even a good supply of videos if forced to 'stay in' because of the weather. The hosts made us very welcome, the home made cup cakes were lovely. For a couple wanting an out of the way holiday Buster Barn is the property.

Just what was needed being a 'townie'. The barn itself had everything- a deep bath to relax in, a very large and comfy bed and lounge/kitchen area had everything you needed. Sitting outside in the garden soaking in all the surroundings was just glorious. Sally and Monty were also extremely friendly but unobtrusive. Milk and yummy cakes on arrival were much appreciated so all-in-all a fantastic holiday!

  • "We rarely go to the same place twice so this is a top recommendation."

This place is on the edge of the moor with excellent walks from the doorstep but it’s easy to get to Two Bridges, Dartmeet and Postbridge where many good walks start. One of the nicest Dartmoor towns is Tavistock with good shops, cafes and a gallery. The hosts are very welcoming and the accommodation is spacious, well equipped, warm and comfortable. Internet in very rural locations can be a problem but the dedicated service into the barn achieves enough speed to stream a movie or FaceTime friends. Phone signal is mostly non-existent but picks up within 1km of the Barn; it’s a pleasure to be almost offline anyway. BUT there is a house phone in the Barn which you can use for incoming calls.

We needed a get away from it all experience and couldn't have asked for any more. The location is wonderful with walks from the door in all directions. We found beautiful little spots with no-one else around, just a few sheep. The owners were friendly and helpful despite being in the midst of planning their own holiday. The accommodation is very comfortable and allowed us to immediately unwind (which doesn't happen very often) with cosy lounge, bath and shower facilities and a homey feel. We couldn't imagine a better break on Dartmoor. Thank you.

The owners friendly and helpful. The garden and views are amazing. The area is wonderful for walks and exploring Dartmoor. Our only negative point would be the access as you have around 3 miles of very narrow (and I mean narrow only 1 car width wide) lanes to get to the barn with very few passing places if any for the last 3/4 mile. If you had a new car or were not happy doing a lot of dodgy reversing I would think before booking. We are used to lanes and have an older car which was already scratched so no probs.

  • "Buster Barn is a great base for walking and visiting."

The walking in the immediate area (starting from the front door) can be tailored into either half or full days. Good moor walking abounds and you’ll likely meet no-one, those we did meet were local and really friendly. Visiting; Tavistock is a lovely centre with interesting shops, deli, wholefood, provisions, gallery and pannier market - oh, and the amazing cheese shop. Okehampton, we were expecting to have flourished since the bypass - not at all, it has a museum and Waitrose! Totnes is right across the moor but always worth a visit as is Bovey Tracy with the Devon Guild of craftsmen in a very imposing mill building - lots of good work there for any budget. And if you visit Belstone, have lunch at the Tors Inn and then go and see David Gundry in his amazing pottery just down the lane. The owners, Sally and Monty live across the yard and are lovely people. The accommodation is very well appointed and spaxious for a 2 person place. It’s very private and has amazing views across to. Line of nearby tors. The nearby villages are worth walking through.

The property

In the small hamlet of Sampford Spiney, tucked away at the end of a private drive is Buster Barn, a detached single-storey converted granite barn.

You have the best of both worlds here, scenic and secluded, yet close to interesting moorland towns Buster Barn is well placed for exploring wild and rugged Dartmoor.

The spacious open-plan living area with an oak fitted kitchen, (washer-drier, microwave, fridge-freezer, gas hob/electric oven) armchairs and sofa bed (converts to double bed for alternative sleeping), has glazed double doors to the courtyard garden - a lovely place to spend time.

The spacious double bedroom is tranquil and inviting and has a huge en suite bathroom.

Buster Barn is surrounded by an enclosed courtyard where there is a table and chairs, barbecue and ornamental pond (netted), over which a neat little trip trap bridge leads to gently sloping hillside garden and arbour with spectacular long views to a panorama of tors.

You can walk via a small lane to the open moor and Crip Tor and Ingra Tor are both around ¾ mile away.

Further afield, the market town of Tavistock has an indoor pool, cinema and plenty of shops and restaurants, and Plymouth, Devon's Ocean City is within an easy drive.
