  • "We loved our stay at Marine cottage."

There was plenty of room for the two families. Beds were comfy, the kitchen was good and had lots of useful equipment for group cooking. It is a direct, quick (albeit steep) walk into Salcombe. The owner was very easy to deal with and quick to respond to questions we had. Great holiday!

  • "Marine Cottage is right at the top of Salcombe adjacent to the rugby club and on a corner plot - in a quiet residential area with few holiday homes."

The rooms are large albeit with decor a bit dated - but nevertheless the cottage is furnished more than adequately. In order to protect the furnishings for the owner, there where were dust sheets over the sofas and plastic wrappers over the dining chairs which is sensible if rented to young kids at a low price but for adults paying nearly 4k for a week it made it feel a bit functional rather than comfy - but this wasn't really a problem as we only spent one evening there preferring to walk/run around Soar Mill Cove or be on a boat on the water/beach or with friends. The kitchen was very well equipped. The showers all worked and at good temperatures. The garden patio has a large table and chairs for 8 but is opposite residential terraced housing who understandably are concerned about noise - so the patio is best suited for morning coffee rather than evening dining for larger groups where it is easy to generate noise after 10pm. The owner is very particular with stickers inside every cupboard indicating what crockery, utensils etc should go where where with copious and precise instructions on everything. There is a security camera which wasn't targeted on the entrance or gate but was pointed across the garden and at the patio/dining area which made the girls reluctant to use the garden to lie or sit in the sun. It also felt as if we were being watched all the time. As a landlord myself, I understand the need to look after property and furnishings but it did feel inconvenient for the owner to have rent out the house with fastidious instructions for her rather than feeling welcomed with a genuine desire to make her guests be and feel comfortable. All easy to change though if there's a will. So a good place if you want somewhere spacious up the hill with parking near the Rugby Club to sleep and to grab breakfast from The Spar nearby before going to the estuary and eat in town - but less so if you are looking for a comfortable living areas without dust sheets and plastic over dining chairs or to enjoy evening dining without the fear of upsetting neighbours. As with all holiday places in Salcombe there are always compromises for a price. Marine Cottage has large rooms and two parking slots so good for large families. The deposit was returned very late and only after being chased with an unsubstantiated and completely unjustifiable deduction from the cleaner. The house was left cleaner than we found it but an inspection 10 days after departure claimed otherwise. We had a lovely holiday out and about and liked the property but will return to trusted other holiday lets next year.

I am sorry this hirer felt the property was outdated. I have recently spent a considerable amount of money, painting the whole house, employing a flooring company, to remove the previous flooring on the ground floor and having pure oak flooring put in through out. The sitting room furniture is new. What the hirer called dust sheets are actually throws. A large number of holiday properties use throws on their furniture. This is to protect the sitting room furniture from stains, especially as guests enjoy eating meals on a tray in front of TV. Additionally as this house is used mostly by families with small children, the throws allow the parents to relax from sticky fingers and food in young hands. The plastic seat protective covers are there for the same reason. It became necessary after many grease marks and food marks to place plastic seat covers over the chair seats, I invested in having new curtains made throughout the house, all with a marine theme, a couple of years ago. This has given the house a modern seaside feel. I have also invested in a new Smart TV set, amongst more updating. I have put a new stone patio to the front of the house which includes the same stone on the side of the house. The patio at the back of the house is where our guests enjoy sitting during the day and evening, having their meals and drinks. The table and chairs are new. The neighbours have never complained about our guests making a noise from this patio except for this letting when we were advised by a holiday home letting agent, including my caretaker, another holiday home guest and our neighbours, that there was a large party held on the property which was incredibly noisy which lasted until after 3am. The neighbours were not able to have their rights to night time sleep enjoyment and therefore went to the property to ask them to please keep their noise down at that time of the early morning. They were met with offensive language. We have received appreciation from many guests that the labelling for the kitchen cupboards was so welcome. It helped them to reach for all kitchen crockery with ease when needed. Apart from local residents in the area, there are numerous holiday homes. As the hirer , when advised about his noise at the property, was quick to blame the noise "came from another holiday home, a few doors away". The local holiday home agent advised me that they were the agents for the holiday homes in the area, and it was one of their holiday property guests who contacted them to complain of the noise. The security camera which this hirer could have investigated, is a dud camera with no wiring. Therefore this is meant to deter strangers from attempting to break in or wander about the garden. Nor leaving gates to the property open. This has worked well. We no longer have to keep replacing gates which become damaged in bed weather. The return of the house keeping deposit was a problem in that the hirer gave us the incorrect account details in spite of my contacting him to let him know the bank advised me that there was no such account holder. After some time of contacting the hirer several times, , did he advise he had given me the incorrect details. It did not take 10 days to return the hirer deposit, as result. The caretaker advised me the house was left in a terrible state. The towels were all soaking wet. She could not lift the laundry bags and had to call someone to the property to help her transport the towels and bedding to the laundry. She also advised that her cleaners spent so much extra time cleaning the house, so it was a cost to the time and labour her cleaners suffered with. Cleaners after Covid are hard to come by so they are in huge demand to do the changeovers on other holiday properties. We are sorry the hirer found the house inadequately cleaned. The house was cleaned for the hirer and his guests so it was in an excellent presentation condition. I was there to supervise that every section of every property was spotless, with all the the house looking artistically presented for their arrival. The garden had been perfectly tidied by myself and our gardener, having been done on the morning of the hirer and his guests arrival. The instructions for returning the property as they found it, and extra cleaning charges made for unacceptable mess and disorder is merely what is requested in Sykes Cottages letting Agreement. As far as the cost of hire is concerned I have not received a fee for £4000 in all these lettings. After Sykes Cottages have taken the hiring costs from the hirers , we do not receive the amount the hirer suggested, rather half that amount. We have always been advised by hirers that the position which Marine Cottage in placed is very much appreciated. Away from nuisance seagulls, their noise and mess. Furthermore the property has space for 2 vehicles. There is also street parking in front of the house. This is all free. Properties on the lower section of Salcombe, have no parking at all. there are yellow lines everywhere and holiday makers are forced to park in the allocated car parking quite a distance from where they are staying for their holiday, as well as at a vast cost. At the house the property has parking on the property and parking on the street. This is another reason why we chose to own this property, apart from the all day sunshine. We need to take care with letting so that the incoming guests are able to walk in with the interior in good presentation condition. There is no time between each let to call repairers and other handymen in to correct mess and damage left by previous hirers. Property Owner

  • "We were delighted with the cleanliness and condition of everything- The owner met us on arrival and apologised for the out door furniture which had deteriorated due to UV although only 3 years old and she has been unable to replace it yet due to high demand because of Covid."

We could have used the outdoor cushions supplied but actually we were perfectly happy using the dining table inside for all our meals so we didn’t use the outside table or the barbecue at all. We found the house so welcoming and light and bright, with super views that we didn’t feel the need to be outside and the weather was a bit uncertain at times so we tended to be in the house when we were back rather than the garden or patio. We had a really enjoyable week and despite the unpredictability of the weather we were very fortunate in managing to avoid heavy showers so that we were able to do what we wanted every day. We visited Hope Cove and Mill Bay beaches and had a wonderful picnic on Bolt tail with views back to Hope Cove on a beautiful day. On other days we had a boat trip to Greenways in Dartmouth, visited Dartmouth castle, the Bygones museum in Torquay and Berry Pomeroy Castle among other things. The Spar shop round the corner was an absolute boon and we used it quite a bit. The only thing that would have improved the cottage would be the provision of some extra large saucepans. Our meals on holiday tend to be simple affairs with something in a sauce accompanied by rice or pasta but the lack of any saucepans large enough for 7 people's portions was a slight problem so we found we were having to cook liquid meals in batches in frying pans but we managed. The smaller saucepans were just not big enough. However I have mentioned this by email to the owner who has promised to supply some large saucepans in future. She has been extremely helpful and approachable. My husband and I slept in the double room on the first floor and I was so comfortable in that bed- even better than our one at home!. The pillows were also extremely comfortable. We also loved the décor and the pictures and ornaments- Marine Cottage is a beautiful house and we feel very lucky to have been able to stay there. All in all it was a most memorable holiday

  • "Firstly the positives."

Decent location in Salcombe, great views from the top bedroom and 2 parking spaces. All great. However............. Property a little tired and outdated. Plastic coverings on the dining chairs, old throws on sofas. Patio doors broken and unable to open. When we arrived the bins were overflowing outside, no room for any of our refuse and overnight the overspill bags were attacked by seagulls which we had to clear up. The beds had been changed but all of the previous guests dirty laundry was left in the house which was worrying with Covid regs. No front door key so only one key for the back door for 8 people meaning the door had to be left unlocked in the evening if some of us went out. Also not great for fire regs. We called the owner and this was sorted within a few days but it wasn't a great or hygienic start to the holiday. You also have to transfer a £250 cash deposit to the owner. I had no problem with that but once it was paid we received and email saying no towels, tea towels or bathmats provided. Also told that property had to be fully cleaned by ourselves before we left. We own a holiday cottage and would never expect this from our guests. We hoovered and tidied but a part of our deposit was still kept. We were told it wasn't clean enough and accused of breaking ornaments which we hadn't. I think it should be made much clearer on the property description about what is provided and what is expected.

  • "The House position was great, however, there were a number of issues with the property:- 1) Fridge freezer was not switched on - so arriving with little children and a lot of shopping was not convenient 2) No towels were provided - which we felt was unnecessary as all laundry is sent away to be cleaned 3) The garden furniture is in very bad repair and deteriorating with holes in chairs which will inevitably break, they need replacing 4) The bed on the top floor is very uncomfortable and the mattress uneven."

    5) The cleaners are not doing an efficient job, Dust under beds and dining room furniture 6) Terrible facilities for rubbish - inadequate tiny bin underneath the sink. for 8 people. There were only two bins - one for rubbish and one for garden waste and this became a real issue as were charged extra. 7) Very tight parking on the drive for two cars. 8) We were never given a front door key and the patio doors impossible to open and shut.

  • "Beautiful house, very well furnished, and appointed."

Having to vacate by 9am on leaving day, emptying bins, stripping beds and putting out for laundry man was quite a challenge.

The request to vacate the property has now been changed to depart from the property at 10am. The initial request to depart at 9 am was made because we followed Sykes and the Tourist Board's recommendation. This was to allow the cleaners space before coming in and because of the length of time it takes to prepare the house for the next guests, and to use Antiviral cleaner throughout the house on all touchable surfaces. This is to make the house Covid free. Thank you Property Owner

Very comfortable and spacious with a well equipped kitchen. Short walk into Salcombe downhill, steep walk back uphill, but worth it for the amazing views. Local store on the doorstep for essentials.

We particularly appreciated the comfortable beds and generous provision of bathrooms. We have much experience of self-catering and kitchen equipment was more than expected; carving knives, cutlery, cling film etc. All equipment was fully functional.

  • "Marine Cottage is a beautiful holiday home in a wonderful area."

The pictures and description of the property are 100% accurate. The house is fully equipped except for the towels and no hair dryer. We were forewarned of this so no surprise but as guests arriving by plane from another country the option to have towels and a hair dryer provided would have been very nice even if at an additional cost . The internet was quick, the choice of television channels great and there was a good size refrigerator to keep food. The close proximity to Spar was another real bonus. I would highly recommend Marine Cottage for people visiting Devon and hope to stay there again myself.
