  • "The chalet is wonderfully located - truly breathtaking views as you enter the complex, and mostly very quiet."

You will need a car. Rail connections to Barnstaple etc. are surprisingly easy from nearby Umberleigh station. The estuary and seaside towns of Bideford and Westward Ho! are delightful, and within easy driving distance. Walks from the chalet within the forest are magical and the district is well-maintained. The chalet itself was originally appointed to a very high standard indeed, with high quality natural wood furnishings throughout. However, there are a number of maintenance and organisational issues that need addressing. The tiny fridge freezer is totally inadequate, and barely accessible to those such as my partner Vicki who can't 'reach' the floor. With the best of intentions, I would recommend that the owners take advantage of the space occupied by the rather pointless dresser (which contains mainly ornaments and redundant electrical bits). It lurks in the corner of the kitchen where an upright fridge freezer unit that's accessible and sufficiently spacious would be more worthy of its footprint while ticking the box for everyday needs (there is no nearby shop and Tesco deliveries are not allowed on the site). The three toilets are very useful (!) The comfy master bed is approached on one side by a very narrow space and is also low-down. We are post-middle aged but our elderly parents would not have been able to manage anything on their own in this property. There are lots of helpful guide books, but the laminated instruction sheets have not been updated since 2012! And whilst I understand the logistics of expecting no welcome pack as the owners apparently live in Yorkshire, to arrive in a remote place without any basics provided (even milk) is not so forgiveable when someone has been seconded to provide fresh cut flowers instead! And I do think that the (pre-warned) lack of WiFi is not really acceptable in 2022. My EE reception was good, and had I not had oodles of data from my own hotspot then this forest location, I think, would've proved a little too much of an escape! Just get a cheap package, please... you'll be thanked for it. Don't get me wrong - this chalet is well-appointed and represents very good value for money. For younger people I would recommend it and we might come again, if the owners would have us. However, it's like a lot of my friends, really: there's a generally up-market aura about the place but it does need a bit of TLC! Paul.

  • "Loads of cob webs."

. In bathroom upstairs underneath the basin and by the bathroom door. . Main bathroom no shower glass or curtains...needs room for improvement. No WiFi... so for emergency calls it was difficult. It would help for future. Other than that cottage was good! Thanks

  • "Comfortable, well equipped self catering (unlike some others we have rented over the years)."

Minor quibble is extremely small bar fridge so no chill storage meant shopping every day. Also outside providing a black bin for storage of rubbish bags would be good.

  • "An enjoyable stay."

Comfortable cottage set with other cottages in lovely woodland. About 30-60 minutes’ drive to beaches. To further improve, I would suggest a larger fridge (very small for four people), a shower curtain in the double room en-suite and some repairs to the oven doors (hanging off).

  • "There wasn't a NHS QR code available at the lodge for us to scan as instructed."

No milk in fridge on arrival as advertised. The oven door is almost falling off and needs attention. Main shower was difficult to keep at a steady temperature, needs a proper mixer tap / control. Balcony was lovely but the outdoor furniture was rusty and needs painting or replacing. Bed in main bedroom was tricky to move around and get in and out of on one side, easy to catch your shine on the thick low timber edging. Lovely setting and would go back but lodge needs a bit of TLC.

  • "There were lots of Cobwebs the parcel in master room was hanging of and very sharp and water in other bathroom was boiling hot no cold water so could not us the shower ."

In kitchen was fine but we wised it had a washing machine as we were there for two weeks.

  • "Although we enjoyed our holiday in Devon I wasn't overly pleased with the holiday cottage."

It had all the basic necessities although the bed was far too low and difficult to get into for someone with slight back problems. The location of the holiday cottage was the real problem. It is very isolated and access is awkward. You have to drive up a very narrow track through a steeply wooded hillside. There are few places of interest in the neighbourhood so you have to drive many miles to find any shops, or somewhere to eat out. It is also very far from places of interest, again you have to drive long distances to go sightseeing or to the coast. I will choose Sykes again but I wouldn't stay at this location in the future.

  • "Lovely property in peaceful location which is just what we needed."

No wi-fi but I think they are getting this next year 2021 (although we talked & read books so, a positive in everything!!). Tons of cleaning products under sink which was a comfort in these times of Covid. Useful downstairs loo. Welcome balcony windows in both bedrooms which was lovely on warm days. Would have been nice to have a proper bench in front of the cottage as there was outside the other cottages, think we would have sat outside more although there was a small bench ☺ Close to so many places within easy reach of great roads.

  • "Lovely lodge in the woods with most things you need."

Cleanliness is not its best quality, cobwebs And dust everywhere. Beds were comfortable but it does need general updating.

  • "Lovely location in well-equipped accommodation."

Very rural as advertised but a good starting point for many places in Devon. We went as a couple but would be equally comfortable for four.

The road up to the site needs attention but otherwise lovely

  • "The driveway up to the cottage was a bit ropey."

Quite a few potholes that could do with filling in. The lodge was lovely, everything u would need for good holiday. Only things we found a problem were the fact that u had to have the heating on to get hot water and the bath with the shower over seemed to be blocked, the water took a long time to drain out. Apart from those two small things it was a brilliant lodge in a beautiful place. I would certainly book it again.
