Bideford 7 miles; Westward Ho! 10 miles.

Great Torrington is an unspoilt town built on high ground above the River Torridge, and is a fifteen minute drive from the spectacular North Devon coast at Westward Ho!. With historic links to the Civil War, the “Torrington 1646” attraction at Castle Hill in the town gives an interesting insight to the Roundheads and Cavaliers. Another leading tourist attraction is Dartington Crystal where visitors can see craftsmen blowing and shaping glass, follow the history of glassmaking and buy some beautiful pieces. The town has a good selection of individual shops, a friendly atmosphere, and some good inns. About a mile from Great Torrington is the spectacular RHS garden at Rosemoor, splendid with colourful roses in summer and in a breathtaking setting by the River Torridge. There are many villages to visit on the North Devon coast including picturesque Clovelly built on a steep hillside above the sea, Westward Ho! with fabulous sandy beaches and Hartland village with narrow streets, village square and Hartland Point with breathtaking sea and coastal views. Great Torrington is a quiet, convenient base from which to explore North Devon, the Tarka Trail and the rolling Devon landscapes.

The Property

Great Torrington 1.5 miles. This cosy cottage is situated within the grounds of Higher Darracott Farm, in a tranquil rural setting, with fabulous views across rolling Devon countryside towards Lundy Isle and the coast. The owners live in the neighbouring farmhouse and keep rare breed hens, ponies, and sheep, which graze on the adjacent field. This Great Torrington cottage, formerly a barn, has been tastefully renovated and boasts character features such as oak doors, latch handles and exposed beams throughout, while the upside-down accommodation allows guests to make the most of the superb countryside views from the open plan living area. Outside, a patio garden offers the perfect spot to enjoy an evening meal as the sun sets over the countryside. The local town of Great Torrington has a Victorian Pannier market, is well-stocked with award-winning shops, pubs and cafes, and has tourist attractions giving an insight into its link with the Civil War history. Visit Dartington Crystal and see glassblowing, or spend a day wandering around the beautiful RHS Rosemoor Gardens with arboretum and herbaceous borders. Nearby are the coastal villages of Lynton and Lynmouth with the cliff-top railway and boutique shops, pretty Clovelly with its quaint, narrow, cobbled streets, built on a steep hill above the sea, and sandy beaches at Westward Ho!, making this Great Torrington cottage an ideal base for a fantastic holiday in North Devon.
