About the location
Colchester 7 miles; Clacton-on-Sea 15 miles; Ipswich 17 miles.
Colchester is reputed to be the oldest recorded Roman town in Britain, and was once claimed to be the Roman capital. Therefore, it is no surprise to read that it is steeped in history covering the centuries back from Roman times through to the Victorian Era, showcased in Colchester’s four museums. Colchester has its own castle, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, which over the centuries has been a royal castle to King John, a family home and, during the 17th century, a prison for witches! If modern culture is more appealing then this town can bring you right up to date, with theatres and its own Art Centre, pubs offering live music in abundance, or just a quiet stroll and some retail therapy. For a day to remember take yourself to Colchester Zoo, considered one of the finest in Europe with 260 species to see in 60 acres of parkland and lakes.
