The property

Situated in the scattered and isolated crofting township of Conista, within the surrounds of Duntulm, in the far north of the Trotternish Peninsula of Skye, Ridge End Cottage enjoys spectacular views over tranquil crofts to the sea and distant mountains. Unusually designed, the traditional, whitewashed exterior of this detached cottage belies its modern décor, with a cathedral ceiling and a mezzanine bedroom. The high standard of craftsmanship, cosy furnishings and amount of wood used give a warm, welcoming atmosphere. With great hill and coastal walking, and boat trips nearby, the cottage is an ideal wildlife and birdwatcher's retreat. The elusive corncrake inhabits a number of crofting meadows nearby, and a sighting of the rare merlin is possible. Along the seashore and lochs, otters and seals patrol the sheltered bays. Seabirds including diving gannets, cormorants, guillemots and puffins abound. A stay at Ridge End Cottage promises to be a memorable holiday indeed.

Three bedrooms: 1 x ground floor double, 1 x ground floor twin, 1 x spacious mezzanine double. Ground floor shower room with shower, basin & WC. Open plan living area with fitted kitchen, folding table & 6 chairs, & sitting area with woodburner.

    • “I picked this cottage originally as it was near to the Quraing which is one of my favourite places on Skye. The cottage is really well fitted out. We used the top mezzanine which allowed us to see the northern lights from the top windows over the top of the island. There is a local shop a little drive away, but noting really else which means planning ahead and cooking at the cottage - the facilities are great for this so no issue! There are some great features of the cottage - the woodburner is really good and the power shower is superb after a long day on the hills. Overall, a great cottage in a very scenic location. Wish we'd stayed longer!!!”

    • “Stayed at Ridge End Cottage for 2 weeks in August 2014. The house is situated in the North of Skye on the Trotternish Peninsula, very rural but stunningly beautiful. The house comprises of 2 ground floor bedrooms (one a double, the other with 2 singles), a ground floor shower and toilet, and a through lounge / kitchen / diner. On the first floor is a mezzanine bedroom with a double bed and a child's cot. There is a dishwasher, a washing machine, good sized oven and fridge freezer, television with Sky and wi fi connection. Also in the lounge is a woodburner, ideal if the weather is cool or damp. The house was immaculately clean and tidy, and our bed linen and towels were changed after the first week. The views from this cottage were amazing, the Quiraing from the back of the house, the Isles of Lewis and Harris from the front and all around grren fields, hills and sheep. The house is wonderfully placed for walking - the Quiraing, the Old Man of Storr, the dinosaur beach at Staffin, Duntulm Castle to name just a few. It also has easy access to the Skye Museum of Island Life, the Museum at Staffin and the Flora MacDonald monument. All in all we spent a fantastic fortnight in Ridge End and the Isle of Skye. Would suggest that although the house can accommodate 6 people, 4 may be a more comfortable number, but apart from that thoroughly recommended! Should also mention that Lorraine who looks after the house lives just along the road, and she's lovlely!”

The location is quiet with beautiful views especially from the dorma bedroom.Local people were welcoming and the shops and amenities were fine. I have too recommend the Little Teapot cafe in the local village the selection of Tea's from around the world and Home made cakes make this a must to enhance the whole relaxing experience of my stay on Skye.I will most certainly be returning to this cottage and area of stunning natural beauty!!”

    • “The service we received was fantastic. The cottage had everything you would want and more, three beautiful bedrooms, a modern bathroom and kitchen living room. The whole cottage was everything we wanted. After a day walking we would go back light the fire and enjoy an evening in or go out to a local hotel to eat. The location is fantastic if you want a quiet relaxed holiday in a beautiful location with dramatic landscapes. You do have to be prepared with your supplies but the cottage is well worth the effort. This cottage has been put together with thought and attention to detail and is well worth a visit.”

    • “Ridge End Cottage is wonderfully located at the northern tip of the Trotternish Peninsula on Skye. Fifteen minutes into Staffin for light shopping, newspapers, and excellent Internet services at Columba 1400. 40 minutes into Portree. The interior of the cottage is clean and very comfortable and the neighbors around the cottage are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The only (very slight) downside was that the cottage was not as well-equipped as many that we have rented. But we had an excellent two weeks there and hope to be able to return.”

    Mrs Palmes, Watford, May 2015

    • “The property was wonderful. The view, especially from the mezzanine bedroom was stunning. The house was very cosy and had lots of hot water. My little two year old loved the stairs and the high chair. Would highly recommend the cottage and the location was excellent, especially for keen walkers and lovers of good coffee. The single track cafe is literally 2mins away with coffee and cake to die for.”

    Mrs Waldthausen, Canneray, May 2015

    • “This was a fantastic break in a fantastic location, the cottage was an easy distance from lots of Skye's best views and walks. The best thing was coming in from a long windy walk and stoking up the log burner, thanks for a lovely stay. I would definitely return.”

    Mr Smith, Dunfermline, February 2015

    • “The layout of the house is really great. On the mezzanine we could see the stars and the northern lights through the top windows which was a great experience. • “This is a lovely cottage in a magical part of the world. A wonderful place to escape the clutter of everyday existence and truly live! Thanks for sharing a beautiful home!”

    Mrs Farquhar, Holmes, July 2014

    • “The cottage was very remote, which is exactly what we wanted. The setting and views were superb. The cottage is very cosy, well decorated and furnished, and a real home from home. The Isle of Skye is beautiful with many activities and places to visit.”

    Mrs Penman, Falkirk, May 2014

    • “What we liked about the cottage - the remoteness, the sheep (and lambs), the log burner, wi-fi, Sky TV with Sky Plus, the dishwasher, the fact that it didn't allow pets or smoking, the proximity of the beach, the overall décor and the funky shower. The Isle of Skye itself is simply stunning and there is so much to do, but you have to be prepared to drive (the island is much bigger than we thought), however driving is actually a pleasure. There is so much to recommend but we particularly liked the Museum of Island Life, The Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools. Word of warning though - watch out for the grumpy old Crofter if you go to the Cave of Gold; grumpy but good value.”

About the location

Staffin 6 miles; Uig 10 miles; Portree 25 miles.

Comprising of a few, traditionally whitewashed cottages, the scattered crofting township of Conista is situated within the area known as Duntulm, on the Trotternish Peninsula in the far north of the Isle of Skye. Duntulm is named after a steep rocky headland where the ruins of Duntulm Castle can be clearly seen. Conista is 10 miles from the village of Uig - the gateway port to the Outer Hebrides - and 6 miles from the village of Staffin. Both Staffin and Uig offer a small range of shops and local amenities. Trotternish is the northern peninsula of Skye, dominated by the Trotternish Ridge ranging from the imposing monolith of the 'Old Man of Storr' to the geological phenomenon that is the Quirang. The area offers excellent walking country, boasting breathtaking views including the Kilt Rock viewpoint, to the south of Staffin, with its dramatic waterfall. Many seabirds use the steep cliffs here in early summer, including the Fulmar, often seen circling the cliff tops at eye level. A fantastic location for exploring this mystical Isle.
