Athenry is a medieval heritage town in County Galway in the west of Ireland. The town's charter was granted in 1235 and has town walls dating from 1310, of which approximately two thirds still remain. Athenry Castle dates from the 13th century and retains a three storey tower which now houses an exhibition area. The town has an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants and is home to Athenry Golf Club. The city of Galway is just 15 miles away and has a large selection of attractions and is regarded as one of the best tourist destinations in Europe. The coastline and beaches of the west of Ireland are just a short drive away, making Athenry a superb holiday destination for touring this beautiful part of Ireland.
