Headford is a small town in north County Galway. A satellite town of the city of Galway, Headford is known as 'Gateway to the Corrib', and only 2.5 miles from the lough itself, this town with a lake has plenty of fishing opportunities and wonderful views. Headford's long and varied history remains in the town, in the form of ruins, and most notably Ross Errilly; a friary on the south bank of the Black River, founded in 1351, Ross Errilly is now recognised as Ireland's best-preserved friary. The Black River, which is renowned for great angling, is the county boundary between Galway and Mayo. Nearby Cong, in County Mayo, is home to Ashford Castle with its superb golf course, while Galway City, affectionately known as the 'City of Festivals', is within easy reach.
