The village of Cashel in County Galway is situated on Cashel Bay at the head of Bertraghboy Bay and derives its name from the Irish word Caiseal, which refers to the circular stone fort whose remains lie on the slope of a mountain about half a mile north-east of the village. Cashel lies on the Atlantic coast, west of Galway City and southeast of Clifden and the area is home to a number of hotels, bars and restaurants and is renowned for its fishing. Horse riding is available in the area and Ballyconnelly championship golf course is just 20 miles away. Roundstone fishing village and the village of Recess are close by; whilst walkers will delight in the Connemara National Park is just a short drive to the north.
