  • "Unfortunately we were generally disappointed with the property although as a base for our cycling holiday the location was very good."

One of the main reasons we selected this property was that secure bike storage was listed however, upon arrival we found this was not available and as such our cycles had to be left outside. We felt the overall appearance of the property was shabby with curtains hanging off their rails and black mould and stained walls clearly visible. The patio area was dirty and covered in birds droppings and weeds. The plastic chairs were dirty and covered in mould. One of the wooden benches was rotten and the barbecue had not been cleaned. No parasol or chair covers were available. I would strongly recommend someone from Sykes visits this property as I suspect it is some time since an inspection was undertaken.

Naturally I am sorry that you were not happy with the cottage. I was not aware that bike storage was offered and I should have been. However I did offer you locked storage in an adjacent garage which I would have cleared for you which you rejected. "Curtains hanging off". Having inspected all curtains there was a single hook which was broken and has been replaced. Black mould. The house is 18th century and can get damp. You are correct there was a small patch of mould which was cleaned in two minutes. The bird droppings you mention on the patio, is in fact lichen. At this time of year everything grows rapidly. My wife spent some time weeding the small garden before you arrived The plastic chairs have been removed. You are correct about one slat of the wooden bench being rotten and it will be replaced. The bbq had been cleaned before you arrived and there is a wire brush to use. Chair cushions are available. I always tell guests that is there is a problem please let me know (we live on site). Virtually all of your valid complaints could have been dealt with very easily. I can only refer to the previous review which gave us 100% Property Owner

  • "We - three adults and our dog - had a wonderful time at Wheelbarrow Cottage."

The owners, David and Nicola, were friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. The cottage is in a lovely, quiet location, with easy access - through glorious countryside - to pretty villages, towns, the cities of Hereford and Worcester, and National Trust properties. The cottage is very well equipped, clean and comfortable, and there was no skimping on the central heating by the owners: it was fully within our control at all times, which we appreciated on cooler evenings. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage as so much more than a base from which to explore the area: it was a home-from-home.

  • "The only complaint is with Sykes description NOT the cottage."

There is not a pub within walking distance, in fact nowhere near the cottage. The pub in the village of Stoke Prior unfortunately closed at least 3 years ago and is now a house.

  • "A lovely relaxing cottage in beautiful countryside."

We had a lovely week there. Only complaint, the single beds were uncomfortable, you could feel the springs in the mattress on one, and the base was broken. New mattresses should do the trick. Otherwise very good.

  • "The property generally needed some TLC."

We arrived earlier than the stated check-in time but rang the phone number given on the paper work to see if it was possible to check in earlier. We left a message on the answering machine but no one got back to us and when we told David this he said 'we don't really use the land line very much' !! In our opinion this property should be graded as a 3 star

The cottage was in a lovely location and had good facilities. Double bed mattress was soft and uncomfortable and the fridge was tiny, certainly not enough space for 4 people’s food. Saying that, everything else was lovely.

  • "The cottage is a story of two halves, on the one hand the cottage was very spacious, warm, plenty of hot water and the welcome pack of tea, milk and biscuits was most welcome after our long drive, there was parking for two cars in front of the cottage."

On the other hand - bedroom one had a unit of drawers but there were so small you had difficulty putting clothes in, the second bedroom had no chest of drawers at all, although there was plenty of room to add one, thankfully there was a spare bed which could be used. All the beds whilst adequate would be in need of a change soon. The lounge furniture was most uncomfortable and you could not sit on it for any length of time. The chairs round the kitchen table could be enhanced if seat cushions could be added. Did we have a good time - yes. The weather was atrocious but we were warm and snug in an pretty area.

I am disappointed that you rated us so poorly, as to date our ratings have been very high. Thank you for the information regarding storage, we can and will rectify this. As regards the comfort issues I can only refer you to the previous feedback comment which reported that the cottage was "very comfortable". As always we impress on our guests to let us know of any problems, and as we were not informed of any issues during your stay we were not able to try to address your criticisms Property Owner

  • "Lovely spot."

Fabulous view over the country side. Although on the main road into the village you are well shielded by the wall and plants and the traffic is minimal (we live on the outskirts of town so comparing it to that). The house is fairly well equipped. I don’t think there was anything we missed in the kitchen. The garden is a real sun trap perfect for a barbecue and a lazy evening chatting over a glass of beer and secure for the dog. We really enjoyed our stay. It’s a shame the pub in the village has shut down but in all fairness we didn’t miss it.

  • "This holiday is a regular get together for myself, my sister and our daughters (although one daughter couldn't make it this year)."

Last year we booked a cottage through another agency and were not at all impressed. As you can imagine we were a little apprehensive about finding the cottage up to our standards. We were not disappointed. The location and standard of the accommodation were suitable for all our needs. It was easy to get to all the places we wanted to see and as we were out all day it was lovely to come back to a warm cottage. The owner was on site if we had any problems ( we didn't) so all in all a great break.

  • "Lovely property, spacious."

Good location, found plenty to do. Beautiful area, owners close by. Just a couple of niggles, the double bed had a mattress with springs and squeaked every time you turned, sadly because of the hot weather we turned quite a lot. The wash hand basin in double room bathroom had an intermittent fault where it would let the water out of the sink. Having said that nothing spoiled our holiday, it was great and we would go again to this property.

  • "I guess this would qualify as an average cottage compared to the ones we have gone to through Sykes in previous years."

The cottage was very spacious, but arranged in a strange way downstairs. The facilities were good, but not great. Some small items of equipment weren't available (tongues for the grill for instance) but there were three can openers!!. The cottage was a little tired is the best way to describe it, but still very good as a base.

  • "This was an impromptu break, so I didn’t research the cottage in as much depth as I normally would."

I just wanted somewhere that looked comfy, allowed my dog, and wasn’t too much of a journey from home. It turned out to be all of those things and loads more. So much so that I would happily sell up and move there tomorrow..... The cottage is very clean, light, airy and spacious. The main bed is exceptionally comfortable (didn’t try the others, obviously), and the choice between full bathroom and full shower room was perfect for me. The south-facing patio, looking out over the fields and hills, is idyllic and we spent a lot of time there, watching the swallows and swifts toing and froing. We had the bonus of stunning weather too. And peaceful......so very peaceful..... The location is also perfect for country walks, and of course a good base for NT properties Berrington Hall, Croft Castle and Brockhampton Estate. The cottage is also well equipped, with most things provided that any normal person or family would want. There are a couple of things that the kitchen is short of but, as a self-catering veteran, I am always prepared for this, as I am used to it..... In short, I and my furry friend loved it and had the most fabulous weekend ever. We will certainly be returning. As soon as we can save our pennies to do so in fact.......

The only thing that was a disappointment was that there should have been a shop and pub near by but unfortunately both have closed, therefore it should now be removed from the listing to save any future disappointment.

Near to Leominster making it a very convenient location if you are planning to self-cater or to visit the local pubs. The Host was always near and very helpful, the cottage is very well stocked even having a drip coffee pot (if I had known I would have packed my favorite coffee grounds), and with the private patio just outside the dining area the perfect spot to enjoy that morning coffee.
