Really well appointed, with excellent modern equipment in the kitchen and bathrooms. The location is superb, particularly access to the truly wonderful Curious Cat pub. We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Herne.

  • "On first entering the property it presented well."

However, issues soon became clear. The cottage needs a deep clean, for example the oven is dirty, as are the oven tins. The upstairs windows have green mould and there is part of one of the bedroom ones which has a piece taped on with sticky tape. The shower door has thick black mould on the bottom and the kettle has bad furring and more mould. When we arrived on the friday afternoon the TV didn't work. We phoned the owner who said he knew and was trying to find someone to look at it. It was eventually mended on the sunday afternoon, and worked ok on monday, tuesday and wednesday, but on thursday and friday there was no bbc 1 or bbc 2. When we arrived home there was an email to advise that there was a problem with reception. Needless to say we will not be returning and it was the worst Sykes cottage we have been to.

I am sorry that the cottage didn’t come up to expectations. We have looked into the issues raised. The oven and oven tins will be thoroughly cleaned. As for the mould, on the windows, we stayed at the cottage the week before and we didn't see any. The original cast iron window frames on the landing do suffer from condensation. If we could, we would replace them with double glazed units. Unfortunately we are in a conservation area and are not allowed to do so. Apart from regular inspections, we do rely on our guests to inform us of any problems. We did respond promptly to the TV signal (we had new aerial installed on Sunday!) You could have mentioned these other issues and we would have responded. Again, apologies for not having a better experience. Property Owner

If anything I felt that the description didn’t do it justice - as the history and renovation of the workhouses cottages was fascinating . The cottage was nicely furnished and spotless . I only took one star for the rather soft bed although it wasn’t a major issue for us and didn’t spoil our holiday . Would recommend to anyone looking to stay in this interesting part of Kent . I’m

The cottage is extremely well equipped with everything you might want. Easy to find with off road parking space and plenty of additional roadside parking. Full size fridge/freezer, easy to use oven with plenty of pots and pans. Lots of information and instructions provided. Very quiet area but conveniently close to Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable. Great food at the Curious Cat pub, just across the road. Would definitely go back.

  • "A lovely cottage great to explore near and far ."

The curious cat is only minutes away and a great place to eat the atmosphere is lovely and so are the staff they will go out of there way to make you feel very welcome. The smugglers Inn is in the village about 10 mins walk down the hill another nice pub also there is a micro pub 10 the other way called goodies ales .There are lots of places to visit for the day .Dover, Ramsgate ,margate ,and of course Canterbury don't forget to visit the cathedral which is spectacular. In the cottage a few things that I didn't like the bed was to low ,to soft for us and not big enough, also could do with some new towels they were well worn out .There were no canisters in the kitchen for our tea ,suger and coffee we had to make do with using mugs for the week .It would have been nice to sit out at night time at the front of the cottage perhaps on a slabbed area instead of the back of the cottage where at night it was cold because the sun was on the frount. We didn't find the dvd player till our last night it wasn't with the TV in the living room.

  • "The cottage was marvellous in all aspects, very clean, tastefully decorated, and beautifully equipped."

I especially enjoyed having breakfast on the patio while watching our dog playing in the yard. The entire estate is extraordinary - a former home for the poor built in the middle of the 19th century that was later converted to a hospital and now has the feel of a small village with beautiful cottages. Herne Bay, Whitstable and Canterbury are easily accessible both by car and by bus. There are also many footpaths, and quite a few wonderful hikes started directly behind the cottage. The cottage is perfect for guests both with or without dogs. I highly recommend it! Mrs. Hoelscher and family, Bremen, Germany
