  • "We have enjoyed our week in this Bungalow."

The rooms are good sized, as is the enclosed garden. The en-suite is small, but it does the necessary. The owner warned us the new dishwasher was faulty, and a repair engineer came during our stay. There is not much in the village, but a playground is just 5mins walk across a field with fairly new equipment. Deal is not far, and food apps Just Eat & Uber Eats offer takeaway delivery (not Deliveroo).

  • "This property is an older bungalow which is dated."

It has suffered from a prolonged lack of care and maintenance and is not as shown in your website. In particular the outside and garden have not been maintained and are very overgrown. The bathroom facilities need updating. The en-suite is like a broom cupboard and could not be used by a large person. Both toilet seats are loose and the separate toilet seat is cracked and stained. The conservative roof leaks and is covered in moss. Both ladies were unable to open the door to the washing machine/tumble drier. The sunshade was unusable as the wind blew it around due to incorrect fixing to the base. The overhead light in the back bedroom did not work and is bound up with insulating tape which is unsafe. I have raised all the above points with the owner(Richard) who said he has been away and is not well but this means the poor occupier suffers his inefficiency. He did say he was sorry but this is no recompense to me! This property did not meet my standards and I suggest you inspect the property immediately as I am sure it would not meet yours. Unfortunately the owner is not able to maintain his property as he would wish at the moment. This is the first time I have used Sykes Cottages and unfortunately it may be the last. I have taken photographs but it seems I am unable to upload them to this webpage.

Glynde has been let for nearly four years and everything was updated and renewed other than the dining room set and the fitted wardrobes in bedrooms. The kitchen, bathrooms, lounge furniture and carpets were updated and the bungalow was repainted, some rooms were also redecorated again. The en suite bathroom and size of the layout cannot be changed but this is not something guests normally have a problem with. Most guests in fact have afforded us excellent reviews including top scores for comfort as reflected in their feedback on the advert. The toilets have been inspected and are intact, with no cracks found. Sunshades can move in windy weather and this is of course outisde an owner's control. The washing machine door is fully operational. Any weeds have been removed, this was delayed due to recent illness but has now of course been done. The conservatory roof has been checked recently during some bad weather and no leaks were found. Some moss can of course drop when it rains, and this is of course cleared periodically. The overhead lighting in the back bedroom is obsolete and there is no power to it, so I can reassure guests that there is no safety issue at all. I give a contact number out pre arrival and also always try to meet all guests on arrival - due to your delay I welcomed another of the guests - if you had contacted me at any point during your stay however, I would have been more than happy to help and I am sorry that you did not give me the opportunity to do so. The property itself is comfortable, with plenty of space and privacy. This said, there is little tourist information provided, which would have been useful. I appreciate that most people use the internet, but it is good to have local recommendations from local people. The utensils and kitchen equipment is somewhat dated, but functional, and the hot water tap in the kitchen, which just trickles, is in need of urgentlv attention. The owner, however, is a very friendly and helpful chap who was only too pleased to offer local advice. All in all, a very pleasant stay.

  • "The property was generally adequate but the en suit facility was very tiny and not really suitable for anyone elderly or with mobility issues as there was in our party."

This area really needs modernisation. The kitchen was ok but could do with an upgrade and the dishwasher was very small for a property able to sleep six adults. The whole property gave the impression that it had received very little in the way of improvement and attention for some time. Unfortunately there were bees nesting in some of the garden furniture which we were therefore not able to use during our stay. The property owner was informed and the furniture moved further away from the house and we got the impression it was not the first time this had happened. I would say this property was a slight disappointment to us after reading the description and not one that we would return to.

The owner, Richard, was seen almost everyday and was therefore, on hand to deal with any issues should they arise. It was in a very peaceful location which was lovely but the places we wanted to visit were all within easy reach without too much driving being involved. The location was perfect for us as we wanted something rural and quiet but the house is within a short drive to numerous beautiful beaches and large supermarkets. At the back off the property Richard has a small holdings with pigs and goats which our children enjoyed feeding everyday. The home is spacious and comfortable, the kitchen is equipped with everything we needed as the pubs/restaurants hadn’t opened yet. The garden is very big and well kept. I saw many birds I hadn't seen before! The only thing I feel its important to note is that the owner visits the property at least twice a day every day, and a few times the gates leading to his animals one way, and to the road the other were left open. The cottage was comfortable and the secure garden was great for our dogs, although as it was quite large, our blind dog took a little time to adjust. Obviously, this is not a negative comment, as it was a lovely garden. One comment on your website, there was a dishwasher at the property, but it was not listed, so I took no dishwasher tablets, and there were none there already. We bought some, but found the dishwasher a little temperamental, a couple of times it didn’t run. The walk up to the back of the property to view the goats was a bonus. Lastly, would suggest that Richard invest in a guest book. They’re always useful as they often give useful tips on places to go locally. Sorry for submitting this review a little late, Covid 19 rather got in the way once we got back!

In the pretty hamlet of East Studdal, not far from the coastal town of Deal in Kent, is this fantastic bungalow, Glynde affording spacious and beautifully decorated accommodation.

Perfectly suited for a family not wanting to be too far from the coast, or perhaps a group of friends looking to explore the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Heading through the front door after a day of exploring stunning scenery and fresh air, rest those tired legs and get comfy on the three-piece leather sofa suite, on a cold day switch the electric fire on for some extra warmth and settle in front of a film.

For preparing your evening meals you will be impressed with the stylish monochrome kitchen, excellent for creating a family favourite to be served in the dining room next door, complete with vintage wood table and chairs, for some quality family time.

When sleep is calling, head to the other side of the bungalow to find the bedrooms; filled with pretty and neutral decor, and ample storage for your personal items in each room there are three to choose from, a king-size with en-suite shower room, another king-size and a twin room with 3’ singles, the latter two served by the family bathroom which contains an electric shower over bath, hand-held shower as well, basin and a separate WC next door.

On summer days you can run around with the little ones on the large lawned area to the back, or watch them play from one of the plush chairs in the conservatory, with an ice cold drink in hand.

You can use the outdoor table and chairs for some alfresco dining on a balmy evening, and enjoy the evening light for as long as possible.

Over in the seaside town of Deal just a short drive away, you can find the long and pebbled Deal Beach, with a pier which dates back to the 1950s, a delightful spot for a stroll and walking south of the pier will bring you to Deal Castle, one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England and among the earliest of coastal forts, you can explore the whole of the castle, with activities for children as well.

For a pleasant bike ride, cycle along the beachfront from Deal Castle over to Walmer Castle, another Tudor fortress which evolved to become a stately-home for famous names including the Duke of Wellington and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

For keen walkers travel over to the Kent Downs AONB to immerse yourself in the beautiful landscapes, with biodiversity-rich habitats providing homes to many plants and wildlife, dramatic views and scenery, and water and wetlands it is a truly special area to visit.

About the location

DEAL

Dover 8.5 miles; Canterbury 19.3 miles.

Deal is an historic, Georgian coastal town boasting two castles, both open to the public, two small museums, and two markets held weekly. The town offers restaurants with cuisine ranging from the traditional, to exotic delicacies from the Orient, but, if fish is your desire then why not catch your own by enjoying a spot of fishing from the beach or pier? Deal Castle is an ideal place for children to explore, rugged and exciting with audio guides to help you get the best information, whilst taking in this impressive castle built in the time of Henry VIII. Walmer Castle, which became the home of The Duke of Wellington, and was the late Queen Mother's favourite, is just along the coast with gardens and tea rooms open from April until October, and their scones are highly recommended! Deal was the most important Naval base in Britain during the Age of Sail and although long gone, its maritime heritage is still inherent in its Conservation Area architecture and house names. Deal became a smuggler's paradise during the 1700s, and heritage street maps show where rum and brandy were rolled by casket avoiding the Excise men. Why not take the cycle path from Deal to Kingsdown, a pretty Kent village with views across to France? Here you can rest and recuperate in one of the three pubs all serving excellent food. If golf is your game then there are 12 courses within a 30 minute journey, but Royal Cinque Ports, Royal St. Georges and Kingsdown are within an easy distance. For sheer imposing magnificence nearby Dover Castle is an absolute must visit on any visitor's list. Spectacularly situated above the White Cliffs of Dover, this magnificent castle has guarded our shores from invasion for 20 centuries. Deal won the Daily Telegraph's ‘High Street of the Year’ award in January, and was voted as the number 1 coastal town in Britain by them in November, 2014. Also named as one of the ‘top 30 weekend retreats’ in March 2014 by The Times, Deal is the perfect location for families and friends looking to pursue outdoor activities or laze on the beach enjoying the sea air. Stroll along the cobbled streets, sit and relax outside a bistro or tea room with a coffee, or just gaze out to sea; Deal has something for everyone!
