  • "My husband and I had a fantastic holiday at North Lodge."

We were calling the lodge Lucy’s Lodge because our little dog loved it so much. Everything is just perfect. The lodge is so spacious, with beautiful decor, spotlessly clean and maintained to the highest standard. We felt at home as soon as we arrived. It was lovely that the owner gave us welcome gifts…very generous and thoughtful. The garden is so big, beautiful, well kept with different landscaped areas and we loved watching the birds at the feeders. The location is ideal for going to the beach, villages, shopping centres and places of interest. The owner was so friendly and helpful, and gave us lots of information before we arrived. We will definitely be back to this outstanding lodge. Fingers crossed we can get booked after giving this review! We had an amazing holiday!

Carolyn is an excellent host, with great communication before and during our stay - she also left some nice treats in the ‘welcome box’. The garden is large, and we loved sitting in the dining room watching the birds on the feeders. There are lovely walks nearby, some straight from the house - and other tourist attractions close by. We will definitely be back . Sue + 3

One of the best cottages/houses we have stayed in and we have stayed in many. It has everything you need and more. There are wonderful walks from the doorstep along the river and beautiful surroundings. Its lovely just watching the birds outside in the garden whilst having your morning coffee before venturing out. On our last day we visited the Annandale Distillery which was brilliant, a great end to our holiday. Our granddaughters, aged 3 and 5 did not want to come home at all, neither did we, there was so much for them to do, with the big garden and lots of toys and games to come back to after trips out walking or shopping. It has been a wonderful holiday, with a warm welcome from our host Carolyn from before we arrived and throughout our stay. Thank you so much Carolyn, its been a wonderful holiday and without you letting your beautiful cottage/house out, we would have not made the memories we have and will keep with us forever. We will return to North Lodge and would definitely recommend it to others. North Lodge is a true gem, we can only give it 5 stars but in our opinion it is a 5 star +++.

Carolyn provided lots of useful information before we arrived and happened to be there when we arrived, and made us feel very welcome. The lodge is huge, but still has a cosy and comfortable feel to it. Immaculately clean, and very well equipped so we wanted for nothing. Comfortable beds, in 3 large bedrooms with other sleeping arrangements available for larger parties (we were a part of 3, plus our 2 small dogs). The garden was also large, well maintained and secure enough to let the dogs play out. We were lucky enough to have fair weather and sat out a few times too, and loved seeing the many birds right beside the lodge, feeding at the feeders. Easy travel to lots of local places of interest too, and large parking area down drive to back of property. A generous welcome pack was the icing on the cake, so thank you for everything Carolyn, we hope to return soon.

Thank you so much for such wonderful feedback - it is so greatly appreciated. Listening to the river at the end of the property was so tranquil and relaxing and so many beautiful walks on the doorstep. ! This property is beautiful and spacious inside and out. The garden is massive with many different parts to it that make it impossible to see all of it from one vantage point. Our dogs loved it and it is 100% secure. The directions were spot on and the house is really easy to find. It's close enough to Annan that getting provisions was not a pain in the proverbial! The woodland river walk that is directly out of the gate (no need for any road walking) is so beautiful in the spring. highly recommend a stay at North Lodge. There was only two of us but there is more than enough room for a large family to stay very comfortably. Oh! and there was all the children's toys you could want and lots of outdoor/lawn games provided. Netflix is also on tap for the rainy days. We loved it and will probably return with friends as it's too big for just 2 people to enjoy!

I booked this holiday in January 2020, but due to Covid restrictions it had to be rearranged 3 times, but boy oh boy it was worth the wait. This 2 weeks has gone in a flash, I could stay here forever. I have holidayed in at least 10 or 11 Sykes Cottages, but North Lodge stands head and shoulders above the rest, absolutely all bases are covered, the kitchen is a dream, every pot, pan, dish, cutlery and electrical item you could possibly need is here, there are books, dvds, toys and games galore. The beds are comfortable, the furnishings are of a high standard. Carolyn the owner is one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet, she phoned me prior to the holiday, and messaged a few times whilst I was here to check I was OK due to the adverse weather conditions, and I met her during my first week here, she goes that extra mile to ensure you have a great holiday. When our children & grandchildren were with us for the weekend they enjoyed playing in the garden - despite the cold and windy showers.  On one good afternoon we all managed to play 'beat the goalie' and rounders...what fun! They also enjoyed some of the many games you have in the house. I don't think I have ever stayed in a house that was so well-stocked with things to do indoors. My personal challenge was to complete the Downton Abbey jigsaw which I managed just 5 minutes before leaving...the last piece had escaped onto the floor unnoticed. For me, the most relaxing feature of the week was just looking out to the garden (where we were lucky enough to see a red squirrel nibbling at the bird feeder one morning) and relaxing on the bench at the top garden when the sun came out. My husband had the chance to go fishing on the Annan and at a local fishery so he was in his element. North Lodge is so spacious, well fitted out and comfortable that we could have lingered longer very happily. However, we were there in very strange times as the coronovirus began to take hold, with shops, offices and schools closing during our stay. Nevertheless, we would thoroughly recommend this house to our family and friends and we wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

I have to say our relatively good sized garden seemed small on our return back to "HQ" and the kids are bemoaning the fact that we lack storage and roominess and a "wowee garden". The holiday house was in perfect pristine order for our arrival with all the creature comforts (plus!) that we could want. It kind of spoils you because you know that you will use the North Lodge "credentials" on a comparative basis. The delightful owner seemed like an old time pal by the time the holiday was over, such was her relaxed, informative and hospitable manner. However, equally your privacy is of paramount importance. If you require assistance of any sort - it is there at your fingertips. She really does want to know that the occupants are happy -not so with every self catering we have booked in the past. Sykes made the whole process seamless from start to finish and the early booking deposit is a very attractive inducement. The house served us well and flourished in the hubbub of a Gretna Green wedding as our daughter and her bridal entourage prepared for the Big Day (which was a huge success). Carolyn, the property owner, was the perfect host giving support and information before, during and after our stay and going above and beyond to make the wedding week a fabulous stay. The Brig Inn at Brydekirk served wonderful home cooked food and everyone there went out of their way to make us very welcome. Sykes were also brilliant and very helpful during the booking process. This house is a home; beautifully decorated with everything needed for an extremely comfortable stay. There were six adults and two lab retrievers in our party; plenty of room inside and out meant we never felt crowded. We were very lucky with the weather for the first part of our stay and a storm at the end of the week meant a day indoors proved quite a treat as there was plenty of games to play and movies to watch (Netflix and DVD's). We booked ahead before our arrival for dinner at the Brig Inn. The couple who run this were so helpful and very welcoming and Mary who does the cooking is a real treasure. The main of mince and tatties in giant Yorkshire puddings with the most mouth watering deserts for after went down a storm. We even went to their coffee morning (every Thursday at 11am) pots of fresh coffee and tea and all you can eat cakes for just £5 a head!! Cakes too numerous to mention but the Victoria sponge was too die for and the scones were amazing; again all baked by Mary who could give Mary Berry a run for her money! A day at Powfoot beach, about 3 miles away, was lovely with lunch at Del Amitri's, their parsnip soup was delish. Annan town itself is a great place for a wander around and we always get dinner at the farmer's market who sell homemade pies, lasagnes etc. The shop keepers are very welcoming ushering in the dogs so they don't feel left out. Another dog friendly shopping experience can also be had at the Gretna Gateway Outlet; the majority of the shops allowing dogs inside and there was fresh bowls of water along the shopping parade for them. Also I cannot finish this review without a huge thank you to the cleaners who do an obviously amazing and thorough job also to Carolyn, the owner, so very friendly. Carolyn kindly provided very useful info before our arrival and checked that all was okay during our stay; the welcome gift was also very much appreciated. We will be back.

The house is spacious and caters for all ages. There’s games for the all ages, both indoor games and games for outdoors. The house is clean and well maintained. The garden is big and dog friendly. This felt like home, from arriving to the sadness of leaving. Our holidays in January are special to us and I look for houses that cater for dogs and use quality furnishings and don’t require a second mortgage to rent it for the week. North lodge does this. One worry renting a house and taking my dogs is the washing facilities for them, my two seem to attract mud, I needn’t have worried, that’s catered for, there is a hose outside I used for washing my mucky dogs, but if you prefer to use warm water, there’s a shower room off the entrance hall. (I brought my dogs towels with me) The garden is secure for two labradors but small dogs may find the spaces at the bottom of the fence. The dogs loved North lodge gardens, The river walk is at the other side of the fence. We would definitely go back, North lodge is a home from home.

About the location

ANNAN

Dumfries 15.7 miles; Carlisle 20 miles

The town of Annan, a former harbour, lies on the banks of the River Annan, in East Dumfries and Galloway, and is steeped in history, with the area once the site of Roman camps and the workplace of the writer Thomas Carlyle. Each year, the town celebrates the Riding of the Marches, in honour of the Royal Charter bestowed by King James V, which involves parades, massed pipe bands and competitions. The area around Annan has many small towns, picture postcard villages and hamlets, plus beautiful unspoilt coastline, with sandy beaches and hidden coves. Visit nearby Caerlaverock Castle, one of Scotland's finest ruined castles or Annandale Distillery. Take a day trip and marvel at the majestic architecture of the grand abbeys of Melrose and Jedburgh or visit the northern Lake District and the historic Hadrian’s Wall. Annan is an ideal base for exploring this lovely area.
