The historic village of Torthorwald can be traced to the 13th century and the ruins of Torthorwald Castle date from the 15th century. The village also contains a 19th century cruck-framed and thatched cottage, now restored and a listed building maintained by a local heritage association.The village has a hotel and a village hall. An annual Scarecrow Fun Day involves villagers erecting scarecrows in their front gardens. Only 4 miles away is Dumfries, known, like its football club, as 'Queen of the South'. Founded as a Royal Burgh in 1186, the surrounding area contains many castles, abbeys and even a Tibetan Buddhist Centre. Many forests abound with excellent walking and cycling. Dumfries is also a good centre for touring the rest of the area - the spectacular triangular Caerlaverock Castle and its nature reserve; New Abbey and the Solway Coast - and a starting point for travelling west into the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright and the rest of Galloway.

Torthorwald 3 miles. A stone built, detached cottage on a sloping hillside close to the villages of Torthorwald and Collin, 4 miles from Dumfries. There is a substantial garden to the rear of this Dumfries cottage, with a mixture of lawn and woodland with open views onto surrounding farmland. There is not only a pond in the garden, but also a stream running through it, making it a lovely spot on a summer’s afternoon. The garden was a joy! The conservatory/ sun room was used every day to watch the birds feeding. Dumfries and Galloway is a lovely area and the cottage was lovely. I'd like to book it again.

West Winds was a cosy cottage, with an abundance of wildlife in the garden and the area. The garden is large enough for any dog to roam. The owners had thought of nearly everything. The fire made you feel very cosy, the conservatory was large and a sun trap, which was pleasant to sit in. We would not hesitate in returning. Thank You!
