    • “We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Old Bothy and the owners Joanne and Martin were wonderful hosts. On arrival we were given a basket of goodies. The cottage is very clean and is fully equipped with everything you need. it is a dairy farm and we were offered the opportunity to help milk the cows which was very interesting. Martin is passionate about the environment and it was interesting to chat with him. They have 4 lovely dogs who are friendly. it is located near the lakes distance, we loved visiting Buttermere and Grassmere which are very picturesque. i recommend going to visit the Upfront gallery In the town of Unthank, it has a great puppet theatre and cafe.”

    • “This is an ideal place for a relaxing holiday. The Old Bothy is tastefully decorated, has all mod cons, and is surprisingly spacious. It is ideally located both for The Lake District & Hadrian's Wall walks. Joanne and Martin are so nice and helpful and everything about the accommodation has been thought through most carefully. It was everything we had hoped for!”

    • “What a lovely place. The owners were very welcoming as were the dogs. It was ideal for getting to the North lakes. The accommodation was excellent. There were lovely little things that made it stand out from the rest, such as a welcome pack. There were suggestions as to where to visit and where to eat. We were very impressed with the Eco credentials of the accommodation. It was very peaceful and relaxing, ideal for families. I would certainly recommend this holiday rental.”

    • “Stumbled across this cottage on Trip Advisor whilst searching for accommodation in Carlisle area as we were looking for a last minute booking in the area. Couldn't believe our luck (the owners had had a cancellation which we were fortunate enough to make use of). The cottage is spacious, spotless and very well equipped (I loved having a big TV on the wall in the master bedroom). It was a shame we didn't make as much use of the outdoor seating area as the weather was quite windy whilst we were there, but I think it would be a nice place to sit and have breakfast in the morning. The owners were really welcoming, and very easy to chat to and we were very impressed with all the work that they had done around the farm to promote wildlife conservation. We will definitely be back!”

    • “We stayed at the Old Bothy for our 1st family holiday with our 5 month old son in May. Quite simply we love it here, it's so unique to stay on a working farm. The cottage itself was beautiful, modern, clean & had all the mod cons. It's in a perfect location to visit the lakes & surrounding area. Our homemade arrival basket was a very welcome surprise but very much appreciated. Joanne & Martin made us feel very welcome & couldn't do enough to help. We're looking forward to visiting again soon.”

    • “Simply the best!”

    • “In over 30 years of holidaying in self catering properties in the UK, this is by far the best we have stayed in, in all that time. The friendliness, warmth and care by the owners added to our enjoyment, as did the very high standard of the furnishings and equipment. If you want a holiday in this beautiful corner of Cumbria, then you need look no further. During our stay we enjoyed visits to genteel Silloth, Keswick and the northwestern fells, where we completed the 'High Stile' ridge walk in superb weather, ending with a refreshing shandy at 'The Fish' in Buttermere! For variety, we also visited Ravenglass (for 'Ratty') and Glasgow by train from nearby Wigton. A splendid cottage indeed!”

    • “Home from home without the stresses”

    • “Our first proper family holiday away from the distractions and work of home and we picked the perfect place. We stayed in 'the old bothy' and it was so nice, the house itself is a really creative use of a barn and is really relaxing. Every room is great and very modern. It's on a proper farm so you get the feeling you are away from home (unless you are a farmer I suppose) which for us was perfect. It's also close enough to the big things we wanted to see like Hadrians wall, Carlisle castle, the north of the Lake District. The owners are lovely, helpful, friendly and genuine. They made our stay feel like we were just part of their normal every day life and not at all like we were paying guests. Which for us was a massive plus. We are definitely coming back here.”

    • “We stayed over new year with our 2.5 year old son. The accommodation was faultless - high spec, very clean and homely. The owners have clearly invested a lot in converting the old buildings and they've done a lovely job - retaining many of the original features but also bringing everything up-to-date, They've also included a lot of really useful bits to make the stay more pleasant and the overall welcome, the warmth of the hosts and farm-based location make for a fantastic place that we'd recommend highly to anyone - well worth a visit!”

    • “Loved the welcome pack&everything about the cottage - already planning my next trip there&my boyfriend and I rarely go back to the same places. Martin showed us around the farm&we loved it&are very grateful for the welcome him&Joanne gave us. Our only suggestion on how this five star lodging could be improved is for it to be equipped with tea&coffee. We look forward to returning.”

    • “Accommodation spotless with so many great little touches. Joanne had thought about everything, and more. Our two year old daughter loved the cottage, loved the dogs, loved the cows. If you want a relaxing, fun holiday on a working dairy farm combined with luxury accommodation then this is for you. Martin kindly showed us round the farm which was fascinating. Nothing was too much trouble. Joanne even posted our baby monitor to us after I managed to leave it behind. There are two cottages on site which was great for us because we stayed in the Old Bothy and friends stayed in the Grainstore. We would definitely recommend.”

    • “We have just returned from our second stay at The Old Bothy and again cannot fault the accommodation. The barn is very well equipped, spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. The owners cannot do enough to make your stay a memorable one and the little extra touches add to the experience. Our boys aged 11 and 9 loved helping with feeding the calves as well as exploring the farm and it's surrounding fields. We would recommend this without hesitation.”

    • “The accommodation was superb with a lovely play area for children which was enclosed next to the property. It was a fantastic setting on a farm which we all loved and had great access to the lakes for exploring. The owners made us feel quite at home and our son was very taken with their very friendly farm dogs. Cannot wait to come back.”

    Mrs Smith, Dereham, August 2015

    • “We have enjoyed self catering family holidays for the last 30 years. The high quality of this accommodation is, however, by far the best we have encountered in all that time. The welcome, friendliness and care provided by the owners also added much to our holiday. The surrounding countryside and the quick and easy access to The Lake District enabled us to enjoy several walks as well as trips further afield.”

    Mr Ainsworth, Preston, April 2015

    • “The cottage was exceptionally comfortable, warm and very spacious. The location was great for visiting various locations in the Lakes.”

    Mrs Broadhurst, Sheffield, March 2015

    • “We had a lovely stay at The Old Bothy. The presentation and décor are to a very high standard throughout. We had a warm welcome from the owner who has put together a comprehensive list of attractions for families (and those without little ones) which kept us busy for our whole stay. The cottage has a wonderful mix of cosy features and attractive original features. Our 2 year old loved petting the farm dogs and watching the calves feeding. The play garden was ideal for letting off a bit of toddler steam too!”

    Mr Woolley, Chester, March 2015

    • “A beautiful location, very central (we visited Penrith, Carlisle, Gretna Green and Keswick). The property has been converted to a high standard and the beds were comfortable. There is a lot of information from tourist areas locally, which is extremely helpful if you are not familiar with the area. A lovely relaxing break, hope to visit again soon.”

    Miss Hodgson, Wirral, March 2015

    • “We were so overjoyed with our stay at The Old Bothy. You can clearly tell how much love and effort has gone into the refurbishment - the property was fab, we could not fault anything. The master bedroom looks quite small in the pictures online, they really do not do the room justice - a beautiful big room with exposed beams and high ceilings was such a pleasant surprise. We will most certainly be recommending and staying again at The Old Bothy. The owners really care about the guests and do the utmost to make sure you have a pleasant stay.”

    Miss Pond, Chinnor, December 2014

    • “The hosts were lovely and really had thought of everything. It was perfect, with amazing attention to detail. The cottage was so cosy and had everything you could possibly need. It made a great base for our holiday and we were all a little sad to leave!”

    Miss Turner, Harrogate, October 2014

    • “The cottage is completely spotless! It was the perfect place to relax after a long day walking. Would recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful getaway with their family in a stunning location!”

About the location

Wigton 3 miles; Cockermouth 13 miles; Carlisle 14 miles; Keswick 18 miles.

Situated eight miles north of the Lake District National Park, the small northern fells village of Bolton Low Houses offers a pub serving good food. Only three miles away is the historic market town of Wigton. Lord Melvyn Bragg was a native of Wigton, and used the town (called Thurston in some of his writings) and the surrounding area as the setting for his novels, which include A Time to Dance. Close by, set just inside the National Park is the lovely village of Caldbeck, which is well worth a visit. The area has something for everyone, including the market town of Keswick, Lakes Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, the Solway Coast, which is well-known for its golf courses and the town of Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, plus within driving distance is the cathedral city of Carlisle, Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish Borders. Bolton Low Houses is an ideal base for exploring the area.
