  • "A very comfortable and relaxing stay at Outerthwaite cottage."

Very welcoming host, John who was always available if needed without being intrusive. Good access to the southern lakes and plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. You are staying on a working farm so expect to hear the sound of cows in the morning which we didn't mind at all. Grange over sands is a very pretty village with a fabulous promenade and there are plenty of places to eat in the village.

  • "A warm welcome by John & his family."

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on the farm and seeing the animals. An ideal location for exploring the lakes. Cottage very comfortable and had everything we needed, our only criticisms would be the shower & some areas not as clean as we would normally expect for a four star Sykes rating.

  • "John and his daughter's were just lovely down to earth folk who made myself and my two girls feel very welcome."

The whole experience was more than we could have expected and the reality of the cottage, its location and the surrounding areas are better than the marketing.

  • "We loved our stay at Outerthwaite cottage."

The cottage had everything we needed as well as being in a great location to explore the Lake District. All of the rooms are very big and spacious and it is beautifully decorated with lovely furniture and comfortable beds. Although the cottage is located on a working farm it was always very quiet and it was lovely to hear the cows and sheep in the fields. Mr Moore (the owner) is a very nice man and gave us a warm welcome, he was not intrusive in any way but we knew how to contact him if we needed him. We would not hesitate to book again to stay in this lovely cottage.

  • "The cottage is extremely spacious and clean, is within 20 -40 minutes of Windermere (depending on traffic) but about 1 hour to 1 hour and a half from the other lakes."

Everything you need is provided within the cottage (plates, spoons, towels, etc) so don't need to worry too much about taking loads of things with you. There is a Tesco extra about 15 minutes away in case you need something. The Wi-Fi isn't the greatest but works well in the kitchen but this is no bad thing as it allows you to take a break from your phone. The owner is friendly and welcoming. If you love driving or have a sports car, you will love the drive to the lakes especially to Ullswater.

  • "The cottage lacked an airer ,washing line."

also a indoor brush and dustpan as there wasn't anything to sweep hallway and kitchen floor. We also was unable to get the central heating to work and as the weather was cold and rainy we could have done with the extra heating. Hope this information is of use to other visitors. It was our first time in the Lake District. My son and I who is 9 years old absolutely loved the cottage. The location was brilliant and the cottage had a very comfy warm feel about it. The bedrooms where lovely and the beds so comfy I had the best sleep I have had in a long time. Coming from London it was so great to be able to enjoy amazing views and lots of open lush green space. John is a great host who made us feel very welcome. We were fortunate enough to be able to get fresh eggs from him which was great. The location of the cottage was great we were able to access lake Windermere, the steam train and cruise and also Go Ape. We had an amazing staycation definitely will be doing it again and highly recommend staying at his cottage.

E deep trenches right at the side of doorstep we informed Alice Saturday morning and she very kindly found us this cottage, which we moved to on Saturday 7th. This was the first time I have had to complain regarding Sykes cottages, and have used you for many years. So when we arrived at Outerthwait Cottage near Flookborough we were so relieved and relaxed to enjoy our last minute holiday very much. I cannot praise the cottage owner or his family enough, they were so kind and helpful, and we had a really lovely time at this very comfortable cottage. We also enjoyed watching the comings and goings of them bringing in the Silage and now appreciate how hard a job it is on a farm. Would thoroughly recommend this cottage as it had everything you could wish for and more, the views down the fields to Morecambe Bay were very good, and the cottage was immaculate and very comfortable. Hope to return in the future.

About the location

FLOOKBURGH

Cartmel 2 miles; Grange-over-Sands 3 miles.

A superb base to explore this interesting and beautiful area, the historic village of Flookburgh is set near the shores of Morecambe Bay on the outskirts of the magnificent Lake District. It is thought that the locally-caught Fluke fish take their name after the village, and once, Flookburgh was a popular resting point for travellers crossing the sands from Lancaster and still provides a home for cockle and shrimp fishers. Facilities in the village include a pub, a grocery, a chemist, a Post Office and two food outlets. The Cumbrian Coastal Way footpath passes nearby and a short walk away from the village is delightful countryside, such as Humphrey Head, views of the bay, with its wading bird life, and Coniston's mountain range. A few minutes’ drive or a pleasant off road walk leads to historic Cartmel, with its beautiful Priory, popular race course, antique and gift shops, pubs and restaurants; including the Michelin Star-rated L’Enclume. Just over a mile away you will find the beautiful house and gardens of Holker Hall and also nearby you can try horse riding just six miles to the north at Bigland, or visit the Edwardian resort of Grange, which offers a range of hotels, restaurants, shops, a traffic-free promenade, ornamental gardens and golf courses.
